In this video, I walk you through how to set up a portable electric fence, how to train your horses to respect it, and easy take down.
A portable electric fence is a thing of beauty whether you are a rodeo road warrior, weekend horse show goer, or overnight trail ride camper.
First, set up is a breeze and far easier than I had originally expected. You will need to pack a hammer when traveling for easier set up in case you run into hard ground. The small, plastic driving cap is critical or else the posts will splinter. When setting up the electric tape, be sure to keep it as taunt as possible. It will loosen as you move from post to post and you don't want it to sag too much.
The power source bullet is easy to connect starting with placing the green clamp on the grounding rod then the red clamp on the electric tape. I found you can get a better connection by wrapping the tape around the red connection clamp. The on/off switch is a little hard to tell when it is on or off as is the indicator light. I recommend using some long grass to test if the fence is on.
When I consulted a few rodeo pros about how they first taught their horses to respect the fence, they suggested leading your horse to the electric tape and making them touch it. I prefer to just let them figure it out on their own by setting up a very small pen which, more or less, forces them to experience the fence. Once they do touch it, they will instinctively want to run so a smaller pen will keep them from running far. I also set it up for the first time in their own pasture to make them more comfortable.
Take down is a breeze. It took less than 7 minutes. I love the handy carrying case also to keep all the pieces organized and easy to travel with.

Thanks. I just realized I was missing the connectors for the this fence I bought a year. Also, my first married name is Cowley. Maybe we are related!

Excellent video. So this is not solar (wouldn’t help you at night) just runs off the battery? How long would that battery last for and could it be connected to a solar panel as well I’m assuming?

Hi excellent demo! I’m buying one. What are the lengths of each post. I don’t want too long to give room to run out or too restrictive, enough to lie down if need be. Please advise Ty Al M 10/24/22

Not to be a nit picker but when you do hook up jumper cables to a car you ALWAYS hook up the positive first, and then the negative to the dead battery, then hook up the positive first to the running battery followed by the negative. Always hook up the dead battery first, and then hook up the live one. Dead batteries tend to vent off a lot more hydrogen gas and sparks and hydrogen are extremely explosive. I had a battery blow up right in my face once...not fun at all.
