You might want to mention when you put fuel in it the first time that the wick needs time (1 or 2 hours) to soak up the kerosene before lighting the heater. Otherwise you can damage the wick. Also, I’ve been told to release the bottom lever as soon as you see that the fire is lit, because you will damage the auto start mechanism. You can also start it with a match if the auto start quits working or your batteries go dead. Make sure the ring of screened metal is centered and fully seated before closing the door to lessen the chances of getting black smoke. Hope this was helpful.

heard that to avoid any odor in your home use only K1 kerosene and light it outside - bring it in to heat the home and when time to extinguish - take it outside to do so.

I’ve owned the large model of this (uses 2 D cell batteries) as a backup heater for 20 years. In this time, the battery cover broke off, but that’s the only thing that’s gone wrong. I use it inside my house with a window cracked open a bit to let gasses escape. Typically only needed for a couple hours at a time up to 2 weeks once during an ice storm.
@msavina9129
@msavina9129 Год назад
I came here to find out if you have to let gas escape on the heater and you said you left a window cracked. I remember this model and base models used in the 80’s at friend’s n family’s homes. I don’t recall cracking a window but I was a kid. The only neg part I recall is it smelled when it ran out of gas. But it wasn’t an issue, it was filled back up and smell went away. I’ve been thinking about the blackouts in Ukraine and it seems that these would be ideal. The other option is buying solar panals but Im not too familiar with them. A gas furnace shouldn’t use much elec, but I have doubts a small panel could run electric furnace overnight. 1.9 galons for 12-14hrs is phenomenal. Seems darn cheap. Definitely doable. I know your post is a year old, but if you don’t mind elaborating on anything I said, plz do. I bought a co2/smoke detector approx 15yrs ago and keep it plugged in bout 10’ from the gas furnace and 10’ from gas stove. I do the tests and it still works. There was an incident one night where I felt awful weird n couldn’t breathe correctly n called 911. The ambo came and did co2 test on my finger (just like the oxygen saturation test) and my co2 was 6. They had never seen that. They tested each other and they were all zero, checked me again and I was at 6. So they called the fire dept n made my dog and I get out, (it was like 15degrees), and they ran oxygen mask at full capacity. I was 39 n healthy. 🙂. They had gotten my co2 down to near zero, I decided I didn’t need to go to hospital since I felt normal and house was safe. The EMS did an excellent job. I followed up with cardiologist. He decided it must have been hypersensitivity to a muscle relaxer called Tizanidine. Ehhh🤷🏻‍♀️ better to be safe than sorry. 😊 🦃

@@msavina9129 So far, my electricity has only gone out for up to about 3 hours in the summer and haven’t had to use this kerosene heater in past year. It would be very useful wherever kerosene is available, but that fuel’s cost has skyrocketed. Used to be around $1 per gallon 20 years ago. Today it’s $14 per gallon at Lowe’s. So the cost makes it almost prohibitive. A place near me sold it out of a gas pump cheaper but haven’t looked recently. A solar system, charges batteries, not run a furnace. The batteries then, run the furnace once the electricity passes from the battery through an inverter, then from the inverter to the furnace. The furnace would need to be totally disconnected from the main power before running the inverter. You never want main power and inverter on at the same time while connected to both. Gasoline is much cheaper than kerosine, so a gas powered generator may make more sense than a kerosine heater. Just make sure you only put fresh gas in the generator. Gas is only good for about a month. Then let the generator run out of gas before storing it away again.

You don't have to wait to light it when it's new, if you first pour a little fluid around the top edge of the wick instead of waiting for it to soak up fluid from the bottom. That's what I did when I changed the wick in my old one and it makes it ready light right away.
@TheShawna1
@TheShawna1 3 года назад
Just something to add here I see you having a little trouble with the wick snapping back the reason for that is your table is very movable and it's setting off the Earthquake sensor that's designed to trip it if it gets shaken.also to properly extinguish it hold the wick adjuster knob tightly then push the button and lower the wick slowly the mechanism will last a lot longer.jim

I’m getting a smell with K1 kerosene even with the wick all the way up and flame above the burner .50-1.0” for good combustion. It’s a brand new unit and I’ve gone through half a tank of K1 kerosene. I also tried KLEAN-STRIP GKKH99991 and that smelled also. It takes 8+ hours to get the smell out of my 2 car garage every time I run it. Carbon monoxide detector in the garage not going off. Do I have a defective Dura heat unit? I though these were supposed to NOT smell?
@Jollyprez
@Jollyprez 2 года назад
Flame is probably too high or too low.
@Jollyprez
@Jollyprez 2 года назад
WARNING! For those of us in the US - THESE ARE NOT RELIABLE FOR DYED KEROSENE! I have used kerosene space heaters going on two decades - I've had several of these "23k" heaters with different brands - same heater, different labels. They clog up if you use dyed kerosene. There is even a warning on the replacement wicks. "Clear" kerosene is increasingly difficult to find, and theoretically more expensive than dyed. You can get about one tankful of performance out of these heaters before you get the bad odor, and diminished flame. No amount of cleaning, alcohol, etc., will fix this problem. Therefore, I standardized on old-fashioned "flame spreader" heaters primarily "Perfection" and "Aladdin." The difference, is that the older heaters do NOT have fiberglass wicks. They're all-cotton. The dyed kerosene problem originates at the intersection between the cotton in the tank, and the fiberglass - basically, the dye leaches out and gums-up the wick. Another problem with kerosene heaters in general, is that you get exactly ONE "speed." You get full-blast or nothing. The 23k heaters are 23,000 BTU which is TOO MUCH for most rooms. My "Big Bertha" heater is a Toyostove DC-100 which is only 18,000 BTU, and used only a couple times per-year on days that get below -20F - or in the event of a power outage. The Perfection heaters are around 11,000-13,000 BTU, and the Aladdin heaters are 5,000-8,000 BTU which are much more reasonable for a single room. There IS a modern heater series ( though no longer made ) that can accept all-cotton ( #2 ) wicks - the Omni 15, Moonlighter, and Rainbow. They're all smaller heaters about 5,000 BTU and can take the chill off a room. We run 4 space heaters during the winter to augment the main pellet stove. The New England winters are much easier to deal with.
@lampshadesoapmaker678
@lampshadesoapmaker678 2 года назад
The directions on mine a modern fiberglass wick heater says dyed fuel is fine from the pump but can sometimes have water in it. Water will separate and stink to bottom of can. Only pump fuel from top of can and use a fuel filter funnel (Mr. Funnel) brand works. Few bucks off Amazon. Don't use any old fuel either of any kind cause condensation will form and you'll have the water problem.

@saganworshipper6062
@saganworshipper6062 3 года назад
I just got mine like 4 days ago. I've been using it for the last 2 days. It has almost no odor when it's burning and it only smells a little bit when you turn it off. Other than that it seems very safe. It is important to read the entire instruction manual from cover to cover before you start it for the first time (only like 12 pages or less, takes about 15 minutes to read). I bought Kero-klean or something like that which is just slightly more expensive than the K1 kerosene but it really has virtually no odor at all. I was kind of worried because I have cats but now that I've used it for like 20 hours I feel that it is very safe. The most important thing is to just keep an eye on the flame and move the wick up or down to keep the flame from being to high or too low. It should be about 1/2 inch above the burner. Once it's been burning for an hour or so you really don't need to adjust the flame but never leave it unattended and just check it once in a while.
@saganworshipper6062
@saganworshipper6062 3 года назад
To answer your question more directly, the heater burns with incredible efficiency so there is really no byproduct besides the heat. (provided you maintain the proper flame height).

Yes

Sure-cans are great. But who uses fuel from a gas station? Filthy, sooty mess. Use 1K Klean-Fuel or similar if you want to use indoors. If you don't want the place to reek of kerosene that is.

Almost all kerosene sold at pump stations these days is in fact K1 kerosene. A few stations still also sell the standard kerosene. K1 from a pump station sells for around $5 a gallon…. Half the price of stores like Home Depot, etc

To avoid spills of kerosene in an enclosed space, I would assume.

2 gallons every 11 to 14 hours? That can get expensive! Wouldn't it be better to run a heater fan at 1500 watts?
@DelsLawnCare
@DelsLawnCare 5 лет назад
If it would work yes. But when it's zero to 20 degrees it won't heat the whole garage. A 1500 watt heater is more for a small bedroom or under a desk.

A 1500 watt heater only puts out 5000 btu's. This kerosene heater puts out 23,500 btu's. So it is like having more than four and almost five of the 1500 watt electric heaters. Also, this is better in the sense that it will work in a power outage.

Truth is I have no clue. I bought this in 2018 and no longer have unit. We now use a pellet stove for heat.

Not sure how saying anything "to someone's face" adds to or subtracts from the validity of an argument (to say nothing of the realistic degree of physical threat emanating from an apoplectic-sounding overweight man). Weak. Anyway.... lol. Let us move on.
