This fits right in to plans we have for an Alaskan family trip. My son wants our grandsons to see a glacier before they are gone. We have never seen a glacier either so it would be an experience for us too! Thanks!
Aside from the glacier and portage Valley, I highly recommend the drive from Anchorage to Seward along Turnagain bay. It is an absolutely gorgeous drive.
So beautiful!! We got a quick peak at Portage Glacier from the train that brought us back from Denali to the cruise port then we enjoyed several glaciers from the ship in Glacier Bay Natl Park!!

Great video! All of portage Valley and the Turnagain Bay Drive combines to create one of my absolute favorite places on this planet. It is unbelievably stunning! I’ve been to portage Valley several times, and it is usually raining which doesn’t spoil it at all, it just adds to the number of waterfalls cascading down the mountains. You got a beautiful clear blue sky day, how amazing!
You can definitely hike into the ice caves below the glacier if you are willing to get wet :) lol and honestly after seeing Alaska, you will never get sick of seeing waterfalls falling to the lakes. Literally everywhere in Alaska. It is truly paradise on Earth. If you do the Kenai National Parks Tour, they make cocktails out of Glacial Ice :)
My parents took the same boat tour as you did. They said that the Prtage Glacier was simply amazing and has pictures to prove it. I guess it's my turn to go.
That's amazing to think the area you were in used to be part of the glacier not so long ago. We assume doesn't change all that much, but then there are examples like this.

For perspective: I was born, raised, and still live in the Anchorage area. When I was 12 (45 now), you used to be able to drive that 45 min to hour down to Portage, and step out of your car to the glacier itself. It used to sit in the lake right there in front of the parking lot. If you're interested in glaciers you can walk up to, go to Exit Glacier. I'm not sure if you can still walk to it now, but the last time I visited (within the decade, maybe) you could. The trail to it has signs posted with dates, showing how it melted and when. It's a couple hours south of Anchorage, getting close to Seward.
damn that is crazy, I wish I could have experienced that. Exit Glacier has receded really far back. I was lucky enough to see it in 2018 and 2021 and now it is so far back, you can't even see the terminus anymore. So sad
I visited Alaska in l985 and we drove right up to Portage Glacier and were able to go on it. I was not aware that they closed the access down since then. I still have a picture of me standing by it. I am now 73 years of age. Alaska trip was so awesome.
Nice video. I will be on a cruise that ends in Whittier and the cruise off the Portage Glacier with Airport drop off. How close can you get to the Glacier? What month were you there and was it cold?
Nice video. When I went up there in 1983, the Glacier was right at the parking lot! Global warming took it. Thats why now, you need to get on a boat and go around the mountains to see whats left.
I'M WATCHING YOUR WHITE SANDS VIDEO. MY EYES ARE ON THE SAND. I'M LOOKING FOR WEAKNESSES IN THE SAND. MY ONLY IDEA SO FAR IS TO BRING IN ABLOUT 100000 TRUCKLOADS OF REGULAR TAN SAND AND DUMP IT ON TOP. EVENTUALLY THEY WILL MIX AND IT WILL BE THEN CALLED LIGHT BROWN NATIONAL PARK.
hay i just watched one of your older video,s on old hwy 66 but so history today seem to want to get it wrong when it comes to hwy 66 i don,t know why this is it didn,t end in chicago il it was a hwy that whent cost to cost it started in california but ended on broadway ny city why history wants to get this wrong i didn,t know but ny city,s broadway was were it started at the ny end it crossed the george washington bridge whent a long what is now i80 to just out passed what is i287 north for about 20 miles then whent west along what is ny hwy 17 and that whent over to erie pa then whent down though cleveland oh then whent to toledo oh and then to chicago from there i don,t why they get it wrong what do know is that when you drive on ny why 17 there are sigh there that do tell that your on old hwy 66 rout and i also know that there is an documentary film out there that gives one a history an old cross country run that was ran the full langth of old rout 66 that also tell that it started in california and ended in ny city look it up and you, ll see i think history needes remenber this rite maybe you can look this and do a video on this point and help to right the history on this
Very beautiful - certainly looks like a fun adventure - I'd much prefer this kind of fly drive vacation to cruising up to Alaska and around the coast - although, once there they probably offer cruises to inaccessible sites probably worth trying. And you've had good weather! Thanks for sharing... Looking forward to Seward.
