will this lighting modification eventually be available as a standalone mod for Portal 2, kinda as an alternative to than just changing graphics via reshade filters?
@OssyFlawol
@OssyFlawol 2 года назад
@@itscs1175 Our new Lighting Engine is so intrinsicly tied into the base level code of Desolation that distributing it through other means would be very tricky. They should just collectively submit a flash drive with the compiled outputs and their names as a resume. Truly top notch stuff. I know nothing about reflection probes or the like but that sounds like a top notch speed accuracy tradeoff solution to step up from AO a lot but not all the way to the delicate expensiveness of full on ray tracing.
@aflac82
@aflac82 2 года назад
@@fernbear3950 Step up from AO? I don't think reflection probes has much to do with ambient occlusion, but more like reflection and fake GI (global illumination).
@fernbear3950
@fernbear3950 2 года назад
@@aflac82 both of those are techniques that AO seeks to emulate cheaply when there's there's no ray tracing/etc. I think this is still a non-raytracing pipeline so butting this up to the closest non RT cousin of RT is something they're doing w/ the reflection probes. This is just my quick spit-take from my personal experience w/game engine lighting.
@aflac82
@aflac82 2 года назад
@@fernbear3950 Just no. AO is basically shading for scenes without direct lighting. Its just that. No relation to reflections or lighting in any way. GI is the polar opposite of AO: its lighting the scene based on surface color and brighness, which needs the light data to emulate or just straight compute light bouncing on defuse surfaces.

I hope you're not _entirely_ separating the lighting phase from the puzzle design phase. Lighting has always been a subtle, but very important part of guiding players through puzzles, indicating where they need to go and where to look. If lighting is chosen purely based on what looks best, and puzzles are designed without making use of lighting cues, then players will get lost a lot more easily, which means you wouldn't be able to make your puzzles as big/complex without overwhelming players.
@OssyFlawol

This looks great so far, but in the beginning of the video I noticed some pretty extreme waves. I think more stagnant water reflects the area better, as there isn't really anything to cause waves there that I can think of. (that is really the only thing I can say about this project that isn't positive, and the changes this project has made so far are very impressive)
@WilliumBobCole
@WilliumBobCole 2 года назад
This is my only real issue too, glad it isn't just me. I mean, the waves LOOK great, but they just don't feel realistic for the environment. I'm sure there would be SOME tidal action given the apparent size of underground aperture, but the smaller more chaotic waves would be wind driven, and I don't think the airflow would be significant enough to cause that kind of motion. With the huge ventilation systems, I imagine the mines having a laminar airflow, like an enormous fume hood in a lab, which is kinda fitting for the theme too. Like, I am always looking for more games with awesome dynamic fluids, and it DOES look awesome, I just don't think this is the right place for it with respect to the setting. It's almost like the adult models and random grafitti in Half Life Cinematic Mod, though of course no where NEAR as gratuitous, its just flair for flair's sake yknow? That's my thoughts anyways...
@Freezorgium
@Freezorgium 2 года назад
That is my only complaint, as well. Hasn't Old Aperture been stagnant for many decades, or possibly over a century, depending on when Portal 2 actually takes place? There's no wind and no machinery moving underwater, so what would even make those big waves seen at the beginning and at 2:30? Some ripples on the water as seen on the original 2D texture makes sense since there's bound to be little vibrations all over the facility from machinery, pipes, and leaks, as well as maybe little drafts of air, but not those 3-5 foot constant waves like there's huge pistons moving underwater.
@HaTTaRequiem

im sure they only kept that on the video just to show off sort of a new waving water system, because it indeed makes no sense at all

"The lighting in Portal 2 originally was static, baked in by artists during the map compile process." *Proceeds to show "complex" shadows being casted by an env_projectedtexture.* Jokes aside I'm insanely hyped for in-game real-time lighting editor and Mallet which looks infinitely better than Hammer and the game itself looks insane of course. Also it looks like some geometry or inspiration has been taken from Repercussions, specifically in the third and forth to last shots, I am super excited to see where that leads us story and environment wise. Best of luck to everyone on the development team!

That looks amazing! But I feel the blur around light sources (kinda lense flare or stigmatism effect) can be a bit too strong on certain lights, I feel it can lead to the lighting in the game making everything blurry and you lose those sharp edges on things. I feel like maybe some kind of system that would only create that blur on extremely powerful lights a certain distance away from the player would solve this, allowing that effect to look impressive and immerisve, while staying realistic and not hindering the clarity of images. That way it's complementing its scenes, not just blurring them. But it's up to you guys, I hope this helps, keep up the good work!

@@CatwaiiYT Depends on whether it's a completely custom tool or if it's based on Hammer. The actual engine changes can't legally be open source though, I think.

I was mostly sold on that it was just a portal game cause i've been craving another portal game for long while but this, well this is just amazing. It really is a great leap and it's quite amazing to see my fav series game finally gets a great HD look to everything, even if its fan made game. I'm now even more eager to play this when its out.

They're just doing the remastered version for Valve without getting paid.

I keep looking back at this because it's insane how professional it looks, it'd be cool if you also used all the remastered objects to upgrade the original portal 2 too as a mod. I can also see how you don't need any more composers cause the one you got is makin' some bangers. Modders truly keeping this game alive.

Really excited to see more! Tho i wonder will you be brining more new elements to the scene? Often portal mods focus a little too much on what we've already seen and forget the possibility for innovation in gameplay, mechanics, setting and story. Whatever you do i'm sure it'll be a great experience tho!

I just discovered Desolation from this video, and I have a question: Will this overhaul be available in the original story as well? I want to play the original Portal 2 with these amazing lighting systems and upgraded graphics as well!
@MisterLambda

When we release the game someone could use our tools to relight the original portal 2 campaign from scratch, as well as switch all the textures to our updated ones. So upgrading it would be a manual process.

I love videos and posts that showcase the hard work put into games. Not only does it help people be more patient by knowing why it takes so long to make games, but it helps give people insight on what it's like and how it's done if they ever want to get involved in game development.
