It’s also good to remember that the majority of bigger artists are also using a lot of the same gear/plugins, pitch correction, and most likely vocal stems for backing vocals/harmonies live. So even live you have to remember that there’s a lot of production going into the vocals as well. Which doesn’t take away from being a good singer as well, because even with all of those things, if your vocals are the loudest thing in the mix and you’re way off, it’s still going to be noticeable. It’s great that even smaller bands can run an ableton live rig with most of the stuff they used in the studio. Best thing about touring though, is you really get a lot of practice singing, and nothing helps you get better more than just doing it over and over and over and over again…lol

@@magicmark3309 absolutely true! I just meant live as in.. in person. Like if you see old clips of Michael Jackson laying down vocals in the studio, it’s insane how amazing his voice sounded raw. Any and I meaaaaann anyyyyybodyyyyy can sound good if recorded 100s of takes. Each to their own I guess. I'm just a dude who believes in doing things as natural as possible. I like the comparison to coming into focus. That's just music and art in general, it takes different skills to get different "colours" to blend together, different sonic spaces. It's not until right at the end when you're at the 98% mark that everything sounds like it fits and is sharp. It still needs work, and dialling in that last 2% can take AGES before release but still, great analogy!

Facts. People hate on everything to do with vocal processing nowadays but there really is an arms race. If you don't take the time to iron out the obvious flaws, your song will just sound unfinished at this point. In contrast, the standard for a live performance is actually much lower. You can make mistakes, have an S sound that's too loud, be off pitch by a little, and nobody will notice and everyones vibing. As a producer and vocalist myself, I struggle with recording so often have to comp and cheat a little to get to the final stage... But I can also sing a near enough perfect performance of a song to my friends in the same room, so really I feel no guilt about trying to reach that pro standard of vocal production, even with all the BS tricks involved.

This is so true, I remember when I started recording vocals on my instrumentals I took 100 steps backwards. Badly mixed and beginner sounding vocals pull a professional beat back into amateur territory. Mine were so bad people told me to stop ruining my awesome beats with my vocals. They’ll also say the beat is cool but the song is not good because the vocals. Instead of listening to them, I spent the time getting better at mixing my vocals instead. It took a couple of years and being okay with ruining your best beats for the sake of getting better, but damn is it worth it!!! Hi sol state 👋

EVERYONE comps their vocals!!! If you're trying to make the best art possible, why wouldn't you? There's too many people out there that think that being an artist is about being a good singer or good guitarist or whatever, but it's really not. Art is a combination of a ton of different things and, as such, there are multiple ways to achieve high quality sound. Even if someone is an amazing singer or an amazing guitarist, they still NEED good songwriting skills and/or good mixing skills to make their song compete with the quality of all other art out there in the digital world. You can have an amazing voice and still sing dogshit lyrics/melodies. You can be an amazing guitarist, but if you're recording into a shitty microphone and can't mix, that won't sound good either.

People just think that anybody can just go and sing a single take and slap autotune on it and all of a sudden you'll get something that sounds good. In my experience, even with tools like melodyne which are absolutely amazing, if the singer doesn't at least get close, you're gonna have a shitty, inhuman sounding mess, it may be an on tune mess, but unless the person is actually decent, you simply aren't gonna turn William hung into t pain. What's funny too is that people complain so much about autotune, but the truth is, if you release music without it nowadays, people think it sounds bad and old fashioned, because every singer, even the best singers, have imperfections when they sing, they hit some notes off key. The audience EXPECTS things to be perfectly tuned nowadays, so in some ways you have to have it, at least a little bit. Even people that the average person wouldn't suspect uses autotune, do indeed use it, I can guarantee you even Adele uses autotune a tiny bit.
@xrabbz2010
@xrabbz2010 Год назад
Agreed. I’m very competent with melodyne, but if I splat I vowel i splat a vowel, it’ll never fix that.
@johnwest6083
@johnwest6083 Год назад
The reason people would say its bad when there is no autotune isnt because they're conditioned to not hear perfections, its because the vast majority of vocalist these days are not as skilled as they used to be. They NEED autotune to even be passable, unless given unlimited time and takes. No one is going to tell you to change the radio when a Queen song comes on because Freddie Mercury's voice has too many imperfections. Its honestly kind of a cope to say autotune is necessary because of audience reception. Think of any old school rocker like Mercury, Plant, or even the Beatles. They all recorded on tape, which means the majority of takes are done with as minimal overdubbing and punching in as little as possible. You can find the raw tracks online, and they are damn near mix ready just from the vocalists volume/mic control and natural tone.
@DodgaOfficial
@DodgaOfficial Год назад
@John West I disagree, Freddie mercury hit flat notes, but the difference is, so did the band, and because your ear is expecting those imperfections, you accept it. Nowadays, most of our popular music is created digitally, and the instruments are tuned so mathematically perfectly that a singer being even slightly off key sounds odd. It's the clash between the digital and the organic and the dissonance it creates. There are singers that are absolutely amazing nowadays that still use autotune or other tuning software, Sam Smith and Adele, both absolutely incredible singers, use tuning like melodyne, because the audiences ears are trained to expect mathematical perfection. Back then, it wasn't necessarily true that they were just somehow naturally better, as if the pedigree of the performers back then was different than now, the difference was that you couldnt rely on being able to take a million takes, so the band or performer practiced hundreds or thousands of times in preparation for hitting the studio, so that when they did hit the studio, they were so trained that they could do it in minimal time spent and money spent. Record labels are simply not making that kind of investment into music these days, alot of the tuning issue comes from record labels being cheap and not really investing in artists like that anymore, they'd rather pay a studio engineer 3k to tune vocals instead of spending however much money renting a rehearsal space and paying the performer to practice for hundreds of hours. Christina augulera had almost a million dollars spent on her in singing lessons to make sure she was absolutely amazing, what record label is going to spend a million dollars on someone now to make sure they're the best they can be? There are tons of factors that go into why tuning is used, and artist being inferior is such a small aspect of it, we have so many amazing singers nowadays.
@johnwest6083
@johnwest6083 Год назад
@@DodgaOfficial you literally just repeated an argument I disproved with more words. Keep coping brother. I dont think you actually know what a "perfect take" sounds like. Newsflash, if its "mathematically perfect," then its wrong. It would be like saying Sinatra is a bad singer because he tends to sing flat. Just try singing a Sinatra song perfectly in key, it sounds god awful. Singing flat is the correct thing to do for those songs. I can tell you right now, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the vast majority of vocalists are terrible these days. Anyone with experience recording artists, or even just someone active in their local scene knows this. I could easily see the role of the vocalist being replaced entirely with AI deepfakes when it comes to recorded vocals. Artists would just rent out the sound of their voice to the AI. You're already doing what is effectively the "manual" version of a deepfaked voice with extreme vocal comping. If you are splicing together 50 takes, its not even a performance by the musician, its a performance of the mixing engineer. You can rant about how that this stuff isnt right or doesnt matter all you want. It will make your art worse, and you are compromising on quality for convenience. I find most musicians and producers understand this on a subconscious level, but are generally incapable of processing the cognitive dissonance necessary to actually improve themselves. As a result, they just endlessly try and justify their uses of these crutches, often times with longwinded arguments that effectively say nothing of value.

I mean doing a million vocal takes isn't anything new, the same can be said for layering/harmonies. About the only "new" trick, relatively speaking, is autotune. Even that is just algorithmic real-time/dynamic EQ in essence, which is kind of like how an adjustment layer in Photoshop achieves the same results as manually doing the process in CS2, just with more flexibility and possible time saved.

I'd say that the same goes for recording lead instruments like electric guitar. There will be plenty of mistakes and small clicks and maybe wrong notes that can totally ruin an otherwise fantastic take. and then the very next take, the section that was kinda shit is fantastic. It's hard to swallow your pride and admit that in that session, you couldn't get it perfect from start to finish, but at the end of the day, you've tracked the audio and you *should use it*, even if it's cut and glued together.
