We’ve had quite a few people inquire about porting tom resonant heads. Maybe it’s pure curiosity or maybe this is the birth of a new trend. Regardless, we’re happy to be the “test kitchen” and experiment with it so you can decide whether or not to cut holes in your reso heads…

Have you ever tried porting your tom reso heads? If so, what size ports did you cut and how did the sound turn out?

Nope, but I asked a channel called "Sounds Like a Drum" their opinion, and a few months later, they made a video about it!

At 12:05 you mention the difficulty you had when attempting to tune the ported reso head because it is offset. * What if the port was cut dead center of the reso head and you tuned 2 opposite lugs simultaneously using 2 keys? _*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- **Edit** Perhaps I should've watched the whole video before commenting. At 13:30 you talk about center vs offset ports and trying that out in the future.

No, I haven't, and never even heard of it before. I've been doing a few acoustic gigs lately using my 16" floor tom as bass drum and a couple of sound guys have had issues with it being too ringy. I might try this trick out since I don't want that much sustain from my floor tom anyway. Great video, thanks for sharing!

Yep, I have a 20" floor tom, so I put one in there just like my bass drums, and just for the sake of consistency I did my 14" rack tom. Size and position was basically consistent with the other drums, band logo on the heads, band's name is NOMAD, so the O in the name is the hole, don't know exactly what size, just found a tin can that was basically the right size for each drum in proportion, and did the hot tin can hole cutting trick. don't really know how it affected the sound because I didn't put it together without the port first, I just went straight to this setup when I finished building my kit this spring.

The Yamaha hybrid maple floor toms and bass drums have five air vents each in the shell. It would make for a good episode to see how the vents change the sound when they're in the shell like that (rather than the head). You could tape-shut some or all of them and see how the sound compares (while using unported heads). This ported toms head episode revealed quite a sound difference.

I started porting my reso heads in the 70’s. Your take on it is very accurate. I used pinstripes at the time and I found them easier to tune and play. I use a more traditional head combo now, and do not port the reso head. I enjoy the overtones now !

I added the small Kickport over the snares on my 14" snare batter head and mic'd at the hole. it gives a unique sound with the impact pushing the air down to the reso head/snares then back up through the port. I get a slightly darker tone without so much ring, yet also a nice crisp snare. Glad I tried it, as it usually finds a home somewhere in a performance. Great channel, by the way!!

I was skeptical but actually this sounds pretty good on the floor tom. Definitely produces a sound I prefer over the EMAD effect on the floor tom batter head I've seen some artists using lately.

I'd like to see different hole sizes and placements. Maybe multiple smaller holes in a circular pattern would give a similar effect and eliminate the difficulty of tuning.

@SoundsLikeADrum

@Clarence Andrews - Depending on the context of the music, it could be exactly what's needed. Too often we listen to soloed drums and determine what sounds good and what doesn't without knowing how the rest of the music will work with it. If the music is densely orchestrated with lots of fast fills (as mentioned in this episode), this could be just the way to go. Also, the effect created when you mic the toms from below and add a little gated reverb makes for quite the cool sound for a pop scenario.
@RorRiiZzLE

Should check out Stanley Randolph’s “left kit”. He says he keeps it funky over there from what he says, but what he does is just not put any reso tom heads on at all and will mic inside the drum to get a big airy sound.
@TheEnderBand
@TheEnderBand 3 года назад
Well at one point, concert toms (toms with no resonant heads) were kind of the standard and the mic was generally placed inside the shell, at least at live shows- you can see that a lot in the 70s especially- it had practicality too, since for one thing, the drums could be stacked Russian doll style for transport, there were fewer heads to tune and purchase, a tight attack without a ton of sustain to muddy the mix, as well as effectively isolating the microphones from picking up too much bleed from other parts of the kit by being inside the shell, thus blocking a large portion of the cross talk between the different drums. At one point, Neil Peart, Phil Collins and many others had exclusively concert toms o their kits. One modern band keeping that particular old school tradition alive is Mastodon- although, I can’t confirm that they mic them from inside in that way, I believe their records are mostly done with concert toms. Oddly however, live they usually seem to have regular toms with reso heads... go figure. Any Tom can be effectively turned into a concert tom by simply removing the bottom head, posts, even lugs if need be to eliminate hardware rattle- but a large number of drums are constructed from the beginning without any lugs or tuning rods for the bottom part of the shell whatsoever

I actually love this. I like to have a more muted sound for my punkband, which i normally archive by putting blankets on my heads(ringo style), but this easily cuts the volume in half! With this i think it might sound similar and still be louder, very cool! I will defenitly try this

HI CODY, been watching your vids all morning and starting to go into the afternoon? Why I liked the sound of your toms so much I figured I 'll bring one tom at a time and the them to your tones. This might be simple for you but for me an old guitar player DRUMS have been my nemesis I can spend literally hours fussing with them and get no where. I've read info, Watched many many vids how and what not to do. I had bought this Pacific Kit for my boys who have turned to men and pretty much ignore me heh..ugh We did jam altogether and onetime it was a lot of fun. I kept going My pacific kit is 5 lugs on everthing except snare I replaced that. But anyways I always fight with tuning. But Today I made a break through on the account of one of your videos about snare hoops and how the number of lugs make a difference. Less lugs give you that large middle area that has less tension. In the past, I have always tested the area right next to the lug bolt, tapping and listening. like a half inch away. This is basically what 99% vids tell you this method. Well, I tried something new. referring to that wild space between the lugs. Like pieces of pie, That were I started taping there, And instead of turning one lug. I focused on the section and was adjusting the two lugs on each side. At the end, the results were solid and came out with no ringing harmonic. had I not watched your video I would never have considered trying this. thanks

Back when I was a kid....LOL, in the 80s guys were drilling out old gretsch tom's to "open them up" more. These were the old gretsch tacked badge drums from the 50s/mid 60s. About this time Peal was putting vent holes in their drums near the head. I think enen 2 holes. Hmmm. I have seen a video of Jim Gordon with about a 3" bottom port in his 13 or 14 rack, but not in the 12. Always wondered about this. I'll save my heads. Thanks!

Thinking about putting the hole in the centre: Since it's a dead spot on the head you would be letting the air out while leaving the majority of the tone producing part of the head. You would be losing a touch of the low end resonance while leaving the mids and highs. I would love to hear someone try this as I think it might sound somewhere between your two examples. 🤔😊
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 5 лет назад
It's interesting because, while the center is technically a dead spot, just off center is where the most motion takes place and the area that carries the fundamental (lowest) tone. Still, a fun experiment for a future comparison video on Patreon. Cheers! -Ben
@lorenznew2208
@lorenznew2208 2 года назад
@@SoundsLikeADrum I would disagree that the center is a dead spot. To make it more general: every frequency your drumhead is producing will have its unique pattern of vibration. That is called a mode. The as with flageolet tones on a guitar, or standing waves in a flute. You will allways see spots of no movement and spots of maximal displacement for each frequency of your mechanical system. The fundamental frequency will have its maximal displacement in the center and the only place in rest is on the edge. The first overtone will have a dead spot half way between center and edge, and so on. As soon as you cut a port hole at a place of maximal displacement you decrease the volume of the corresponding frequency. So, cutting a hole in the middle of the head will kill a lot more low end then a port closer to the edge. At least that whats I lerned in universtity (loudspeaker design)

I’ve used that on the bottom of my 16” for world kind of stuff, but if you don’t stick something like a D4 right by it the extra low end doesn’t quite make it out to the top mic. They market it for the batter but if you’re bottom mic ing a big floor it’s killer.

In the 80's I ported my toms from 2-4" from the hoop. It was a LARGE port but I mainly wanted to keep the hardware from rattling. It was all about projection back then so we removed the resos and hoops, hence the rattle from the lugs. Of course I used hydraulic heads.
@pjones8404
@pjones8404 5 лет назад
I think it is important to discuss where you put the port. If the hole is off center...the resonant head will vibrate in an unequal direction because the distribution of the vibration is interrupted. I would suggest that the hole be in the dead center of the drum. The air would release even more quickly but the reso head would vibrate more uniformly. I think it's worth a comparison.

I use Kickport fx 1Rt for rack Toms, and kickport Fx 2ft for my 16in and 18in floor toms. However my kickports are mounted on the batter heads, I’m also using a kickport fx 1SN on my deep 8x14 DW performance snare. These ports make a world of difference when using mic’s. I’ve only ever used them on my Evans EC2 clear batters with my EC reso’s. I’m playing on a DDrum reflex Bombardier kit. I have a 9x13, 9x14, 16x16, and a 16x18. My snare as previously mentioned is a DW performance series steel 8in deep by 14in diameter, and off to the side I’m rocking a 6x10 PDP black wax maple popcorn snare (not ported). I also have the kickport 2 in my 16x26 bass drum but it’s difficult to tell a difference as the bass drum is already pretty boomy. Lol but the same plastic product kickport makes for the reso bass drums they make for the snares and toms.
@icemandrummeth7420
@icemandrummeth7420 Год назад
Concert toms, all in the tuning, period. No resonance whatsoever. So tuning to correct pitch for the drum is paramount. With reso’s a totally different line of physics comes into play. You’ll be all damn day sometimes tuning resonants just right, concerts can be tuned in 2 minutes. Holes in the reso’s simply takes resonance out. The size of the hole to the size of the drum will then determine the amount of resonance. Simple physics that isn’t so simple. Great video, keep em comin😊

This trend might not seem popular, but it exists. Back in '87 a drummer friend cut port holes into his reso heads. The holes were cut in size diameters relevant to their tom sizes, and the cut were in the center of their heads. His toms had a short sustained sound, so I assumed he did this for studio recording purposes. I was playing bass guitar at the time, so although I was naive about drums I still paid close attention to my drummer friend's ideas as I knew they would inspire me as a drummer in the future. I've been playing drums since my mid teens (I'm almost 55yo now) but in the past 20 years I've learned so much about drums and I continue to study these drumming trends and ideas as I'm currently playing drums in a band today. I'm not sure I'd wanna cut ports into my toms just yet, at least not until manufacturers come up with port protectors that will protect the cut edges of the toms' reso heads. There's already a port protector for kick drums (Kickports). Now we need protectors for toms. By the way, thanks for this tutorial; and thanks for your channel! I subscribed.

Just a side note about port holes... I discovered this when replacing a bass drum reso head. Haven't tried on toms but thinking it might apply there too. I'd replaced my kick reso and cut the hole and was testing it out. Overall I was slightly disappointed that I just wasn't getting that nice contained, focussed punchy sound I was hoping for by replacing the head. Long story short a friend suggested putting some weather stripping around the perimeter of the hole on the inside of the head. I used some thick foam peal and stick about 1/2" wide by about 1/4" thick and the difference was night and day!! You'd never think a simple little thing like that would make any difference but it was profound! I was now getting that "sound" I was hoping for... Clear, contained, focussed punch! Just passing it on... Would it work for toms? I don't know but might be worth trying.

What about a hack like you did for your kick video where you left the muffle ring? for the reso head, just cut a port so big that it only leaves roughly an inch diameter so it effectively is a bottomless reso but with the structure support of the hoop? I have some questions regarding the room you are tracking the drums in. 1. What are the room dimensions? Length, width, and Height? 2. What acoustic treatment do you have and where is it placed within the room. Low Frequency absorption, mid-high frequency absorption, diffusion. 3. Have you actually done measurements to see how the room response curve and the RT60 reverb times? 4. Can you have a video doing a 360 degree view of what is in the room, against the walls, etc.? Thank you for the test, very intersting. Wonder how is the (positive?) effect of the different miking method, inside the shell. Both in terms of sound quakity vs. the traditional upper way and if bleed is reduced. Did you experience something?

It's the time to put a Calftone on a reso in the tom with coated/clear/calftone and check this out on the snare this 3 types of batter head too ;)

Hi cool vid. I have to agree and double down on the point you made with batter head choice making a difference. the other thing that makes a difference is where you port. Tom ports should be exact center so you keep your tone wood sounds. I did the bassdrum style port the first time on my smaller floor tom and realized the immediate change and mistake. I question the mic placement.. putting it in the drum shell is still getting batter head and its minimizing port effect. Please consider moving the mic back a bit since admitting the air leaves the drum. ' the port effect needs to breath a bit . else why? yknow. Ported subs arent ported by function of shoving a mic in it. I've got a 2" port offcenter , 14" floor tom.. The math said 2.5inch. I'd have to agree port sizes should vary with tom size. 2" is too large a port for a 10". 1 to 1 1/5". The math I came up with was ".9"

How bout a port in a floor tom shell? Like a vent hole the size of say a tennis ball? Would that eliminate some floor tom resonance?
@SoundsLikeADrum
@SoundsLikeADrum 5 лет назад
That would likely affect both resonance AND sustain. Similar to a larger port in a snare shell, it'll make the drum a little louder too but as you've seen here, there can be quite a bit of loss of tone depending on the size of the port.

If always wanted to drill out one of the grommets on a big floor to a 2” - 3” hole and replace it with something like the swinging covers from your front door peephole; makes an adjustable vent, with interior mic options.

Would you consider doing a video like this again but instead of an off center port maybe a center port and increase in size with each drum?
@iopsyc15
@iopsyc15 5 лет назад
Another great and interesting video! This idea offers another valid and musical way to affect a drum's sound. At the very least, a drummer can achieve a concert tom sound while protecting the bottom bearing edge (which is huge as it pained me to see an exposed bearing edge back in the day with drummers looking for that sound). If I had the correct tools, it'd be interesting to see how a tom would sound with a DIY "dry vents" (a la Evans) on the reso head. Granted you'd lost the ability to mike into the drum...

You guys always do such great work, but in this one instance I found it a bit odd how few shots there were of the actual reso heads-I felt like a few more, especially when being played, would have been more effective. Still a great video, of course, as always!

I have a mapex mats kit from 1995. Maple 12,13,16, 22 and a mapex 13x6 birch snare. Any ideas what heads would accentuate the deeper Maple shells and the birch snare? Wanna get a cracky high snare but not go out of the effective range on the Tom's. Any advice would be welcomed. Right now I have clear g12s on the Tom's and a Aquarian high velocity on the snare. Reso head ideas welcome as well. New to the whole head wood combos just looking for some sound advice lol. Love ur vids man!!

I was wondering what if i stick a d6 in the port of a floor tom along with a normal mic like using 2 mics one on the top and one on the bottom (i was thinking about involving a foot switch to turn on and off the d6 )

Maybe useful if you have that one tom that likes to ring out for too long. Put a small 1/2" to 1" hole in it maybe.
@ethierguillaume
@ethierguillaume 5 лет назад
That might be a very usable solution for a floor tom that sound amazing but that's too "alive" and ringing. On the other hand, thanks for experimenting with the smaller toms, but geez, what a bummer!

do concert toms have a different bearing edge cut, just because they are single headed toms? Def not a fan of ported toms. Although I know kick port made little ports for toms I believe? Don't know if they still do?

Sounds horrible on small drums. That said i can see some benefits for getting a more focused tone on larger floor toms. i I have found that adding a second breather vent hole opposite the existing one will help move air thru the drum quicker thus cutting down on ring without killing the tone of the drum. I have been doing this on snare drums for years. However If you are looking for a dramatic decrease i would go with more conventional methods.
@brianphillips9152
@brianphillips9152 5 лет назад
As with ported bass drums, you get more punch and less resonance with the ported toms.
