I am proud of the fact that I introduced dozens of my Art Students at Seminole Community College to this incredible music back in 1995-97. And at age 70 I am still listening.
From the first time I heard them back in the 90s I found a world to lose myself I'm 54 a new waver ) punk ) hardcore ) and goth kid from the early 80s I'm so glad I was there for all this new ground braking era great taste you have in music my friend
Hey Portishead fans! I have just released my debut album CRASTI LAND and since Portishead are among my biggest inspirations, I thought I might share the news with other fans :) I have worked very very hard on this album, some of the songs are fast and adventurous and some of them are more sophisticated, darker or thoughtful and I would appreciate every single listen and review, thank you in advance! Have a perfect day!
I’m building a community to help with that…with coaching and support. If you’re still in that place, or if you ever go back there, hit us up at FUEL…we’re here.
Same here, I'm turning 45 and I was lucky to see them live at Roseland. Another band for me is Pantera, I saw them in 97, opening act for Kiss, in Santiago Chile and then back in 98, Santiago again for their 101 Proof tour.

The other side of the world is IT close to where i am ?Im in the middle of nowhere in the nomansland which is a place too deep in my soul, deeper much deeper than in the lost and never Found. ...?
Ohh, can't anybody see We've got a war to fight Never found our way Regardless of what they say How can it feel, this wrong From this moment How can it feel, this wrong Storm in the morning light I feel No more can I say Frozen to myself I got nobody on my side And surely that ain't right Surely that ain't right Ohh, can't anybody see We've got a war to fight Never found our way Regardless of what they say How can it feel, this wrong From this moment How can it feel, this wrong How can it feel, this wrong From this moment How can it feel, this wrong Ohh, can't anybody see We've got a war to fight Never found our way Regardless of what they say How can it feel, this wrong From this moment How can it feel, this wrong ❤
Same here, hitting soon 42 and still loving PH.... everyone knew me as the guy who always listens to PH. I will never forget when i heard this song the first time - we were 18, some of us already had a car, we where driving and everyone got silenced by this song.
I was young. I did that. I learned it from listening to the Elvis Costello EP live at Hollywood High. I kind of regret it now, but I also kind of still like hearing it. People shriek, even when it is silence that brings the to rapture. Empathize.

I was a metalhead that time, came home deadly drunk in 90's. Immidiately gone to bed. My brother started to play this cd. I remember myself listening it for the first time, telling myself what a great music it was. I was totally fascinated. Still the best.
The amount of rockers and metallers who like Portishead is astounding. My mate a huge Metallica head played me this back in 95 and it’s remained the best album I’ve ever heard since
I was a hard Slayer/Sepultura/Metallica fan when this came out. It was this year that my tastes started to change. I began to listen to more Pink Floyd, Ozric Tentacles, Chemical Brothers, Prodigy and of course Portishead to name a few. Sometimes being fixed into one scene makes you miss so much. Luckily some music breaks the barriers and forces you to listen. And it's usually worth it.
This song & Requiem for a Dream made me run fast for my life, one life saved in those troubled teenage years. Now 10 years later looking backwards after many ups and downs I can say it proudly, i made it and it was more than worth it. Stay safe guys, big adventures and beautiful stories start with one step made in the right direction, be daring to take it! Don't punish yourselves for the sins of others, this life is beautiful.
Amen. Unfortunately I chose the hard way. And my very best friends fell dead to the right and the left of me. Many were murdered. Some overdosed. And many times I overdosed trying to kill the pain of my existence. But each time God sent someone to find me dying and call an ambulance. Blessed be the Name of the Lord! He took all my pain away as if it never existed. And now I am free with a family. And a family is what I never had.
@@soulstorm8806 Amen brother. You're the chosen one to spread the word. He saved us all. I also was saved by him in those days didn't have much friends left. But he has his hidden hand working tirelessly. I'm happy for you River. God bless you and your family!
To any aspiring Artists out there , be original,be creative,be humble ,be yourself, be faithful to your beliefs, don't be side tracked by others . Portishead did all these things . They are talented beyond belief .
So did Talk Talk. Later Beth Gibbons hooked up with two members of Talk Talk to be part of Rustin Man. Check out Beth Gibbons - Funny Time of year at the Paleo some years back. Simply awesome!
Why were the 90's such an incredible time for music.. Those of us who were teenagers in the 90's were incredibly lucky, so many amazing, trailblazing bands, in every genre . I'll be forever grateful I was a 90's kid, proud to be of the MTV generation 😆 For all it's faults, it gave me the gift of discovering bands I would otherwise never have, thanks to programs like 120 minutes and many others. Thank u MTV, and thank u glorious 90's ❤
So few bands will ever achieve making a perfect song, even fewer will achieve it at the rate Portishead did. Such a small catalog of songs and so many absolute gems.
Well said. This is a very special band. Not my time as I am a 57 man . I worked for a young funky South London girl back in 1996 and she made me aware of this band and I've loved them ever since.
@@shadekiahpops8988 I'm 39, just on the other side of that musical bridge. I was too young to appreciate them and only in the last few years I've really looked back at some of that amazing music. I absolutely love it.
Omg, I was listening to this just a few nights ago. I've never read the comments here until now. I made a post on Facebook asking if anyone had a "perfect song". I narrowed it down to 3, this was one.
This song will forever be the anthem of the sadness of my heart. Thank you Beth Gibbons, Geoff Barrow, Adrian Utley. You’ve carried me through more than you’ll ever know.
A man named Walker introduced me to this song. We listened to it together for years. He recently passed away but listening to this song will always keep his memory alive. RIP Walker♥️
+Mandy S all these crazy comments..the meaning of life is not to" find yourself" its to" create yourself."..ye i understand..so nice u get 5 mins so do i..x
Yesterday I heard this song after a long time, my mother was dying at the hospital. Seems like I felt it... she hadn't a good life yet, so I hope, she is happy, healthy and young again where she is now. RIP
This unravel you at your core. doesnt matter how thick your walls are. it hits you right in the feels. No other song portrays the fragile nature of a soul as accurate at this. The tremor in her voice is a perfect match to the song. So vunerable that a gust of wind would chatter her beeing. Amazing.
Guys, I'm being 100% serious about this one. I think this song is at least in top 10 of the greatest songs of ALL TIME. It will forever be playing through our lives.
I remember being like 16 yrs old listening to them , I am 40 now! The memories this brings back is amazing 💕 Now I've introduced my 14 yr old daughter to them ❤
I'm 50 now and a DJ of 36 years.. I remember receiving it on a white label. My Son who's 24 has taken samples from it and thrown em through an old 808.. The stuff he's creating is awesome.. Makes me proud.. Born wit headphones on.. Haha..
90's female lead singers are bad asses in music...Portishead, Morcheeba, Mazzy Star, Cranberries, Cardigans, Sunday, Sneaker Pimps, Bjork. Proud to be a GenX😘

Wow, it's 10 years ago that I uploaded this video. Back then Portishead wasn't so well known (in my town anyway), and uploading purely for the sake of sharing good music. And look at the views now! Amazing. Thank you Portishead and thank you all that spent time on this track. One world, one love.
I just discovered Portishead a couple months ago, and I’m upset that they’ve been around almost literally my whole life and I never knew about their music. But now it’s something I look forward to everyday. Truly beautiful.
I'm too guarded. I would never be a vocalist. I could never let myself be so vulnerable. Over the years I have come to respect singers for their courage to express emotion.
If you are an old school video game player at all, you should give the TPR channel a listen. Really hits the spot for something "different". Especially the Final Fantasy 6, 7, and Chrono Trigger albums.
I'm doing okay. For two weeks now I'm not using Alprazolam or any anxiety pills. I hope you're all doing good as well. Hold tight, we'll overcome this situation together. Love and hugs!
Yup, I absolutely love Portishead's cover of ABBA's song "SOS." Not many people can turn a really happy upbeat song into some dark brutal emotional version that destroys you at the very core like Portishead. There'll never be like another band as good as the extremely talented Portishead.
One of the few bands where the singers voice was even more impressive in person than on the studio albums. Saw them at coachella quite a few years back, truly beautiful.
Legendary, it was something in the air back then, neither innocent or clean, yet very genuine, a feeling of loss and decadence, and I miss it, I can't sense it any more
I often remember past times by the feeling in the air. It fascinates me to think that despite photos etc we can never know that feel of the atmosphere in history. You’re right, the 90s had a quality, even though they were somehow less well known than the 80s.
Back in 2007ish it was shown on free tv in Australia late at night and I was waiting to go get a red eye flight but I cannot forget the music. Fantastic
@@StinkyGreenBudit did for a bit in the nineties, it's just that a lot of them tried to be portishead too much. Barely innovated, everyone was just making spacey beats and recruiting any female vocalist that sung in a whisper
@@kustomkure I enjoyed the music from the 1990's but the 1980's were more eclectic and exciting . For me the 1960's and the 1980's are still my favourite musical decades. ps plenty of great music around nowadays eg LP, Low, London Grammar, Interpol, The Kills, Daughter , First Aid Kit etc etc just bought the new National album. Outstanding ! "Oblivions" is a beautiful and oh so subtle track . Love the female co vocalists.
This song always makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, and sends a shiver down my spine. I saw them perform it live once, in 2011. It was spellbinding, unforgettable.
The Internet was invented for gems like this song, I am sure of it. It's such a blessing. Please never take it down. Thank you Portishead for providing this 'soundtrack to life' song. Its ageless theme and timeless sound combine to make a work of art.
You can download the video (and any video on youtube) using a small application called dvdvideosoft (or any other youtube downloads application), that you can download for free. It also allows you to convert the videos to mp3, in case you're only interested in the sound.
"Aristotle taught that viewing tragic plays gave people emotional release (katharsis) from negative feelings such as pity, fear, and anger. By watching the characters in the play experience tragic events, the negative feelings of the viewer were presumably purged and cleansed. This emotional cleansing was believed to be beneficial to both the individual and society." -That's how this ruse of pity and glamorization of one's grief can be described.
Glad for you and your boys, man! Hope the better life awaits your ahead and bad things stayed in past. Sorry for my bad grammary, I was hit hard by this comment and wanna write some good words for you.
What a brilliant british creation, this genre of trip hop, it fit like a glove in the 90s, a spiritual maturation in pop music with all that peculiar sadness and lamentations, my jungian anima was affected, I admit it

All "older" people on the stage. The feelings of love, emptiness, loneliness, fear, isolation, guilt, sadness, regret etc doesnt end, I knows! Sleep tight!
You know what it's unbelievable? To be 50 and to just discover Portishead !!! Man, it feels like a home I never knew I have... No, I don't recall the rock under which I lived in the 90's :))
a great example of you don't need autotune, you just need *feeling* when you sing. Beth will always be one of my favotite singers because when you watch her, you feel that song.
Back in chicago 94-95 a kid named Gary introduced me and my friend Jose, the only 2 Hispanic kids on the block, to Portishead. Fast forward and I have a Beth Gibbons tattoo on my back. Wish I could've been at this performance. Thanks Gary and thanks for this video!!
I love that music supersedes race. Some of my favorite videos are of different races discovering music outside of their "normal" realm of what they would listen to. And almost everytime they fall in love. Most music does this, just have to be willing to actually listen and let it take ahold of you.
"I got nobody on my side and surely that ain't right." All I have to do is think of that line to get instantly choked up. From the way Beth sings, I sense a slight hint of trying to downplay the pain, but it still comes through like an emotional dagger. It feels so human.
Absolutely love it.. many years later and it still gives me goosebumps! I remember the day I first heard Portishead, playing in a weird lil shop in a side street somewhere in downtown Orlando.. back in 1998.. I was working in the US for a year from hometown Johannesburg, South Africa. I remember the smell of the shop, the assistance behind the counter and even some of the goods on the counter (smiley face pinups!) .. this music was and is part of so many days in my life!
Subtle, haunting and dream-like...this performance doesn't have crazy stage lights, pyrotechnics or backup dancers but it has a soul, it has atmosphere and a certain beauty that makes it more than just a song, its an experience. Sure wish I could have been there.
Going to take it 2019, 2020 and beyond. Real music lasts thru phases, hype, trends, and generations. We all felt this..its guna be stuck on all of us til we gone. I love the way i feel hearing this.
Beth Gibbon’s voice has always made me feel at home. She has a way of drawing you in so that you are so undeniably connected to her consciousness that you start to forget yourself. It’s a unique form of intimacy that she shares with you freely. I experience this with some musicians and their instruments, but she captures it in a way that is beyond anyone else.
October 2, 2019 I listen to this almost every morning on my way to work, I drive a big rig. Long roads full of surprises. Never know how my day will end up going, bumps and waves along the way.
