Trainfan1055 It sounded louder that it comes across in the video, even though the microphone on the camera was on maximum sensitivity. I don't know much about foghorns, but it may be directional, meaning that it would be louder from the sea (where important) than from land. If you want to hear a loud foghorn, the old foghorn on the lighthouse is sounded every month (I think it is the first sunday of each month). There are plenty of videos!

@Trainfan1055: This a pure-tone directional 500 hz emitter type foghorn [ its positioned a few floors down from the original fog signal -in the wall of the tower], its distance is about 3 nautical miles give or take, you wouldn't want to be very close to it though even though it isn't as loud as the original Diaphone, these emitters run at 130 decibels. I don't think Oliver's microphone could pick up the strength of the "beep" from the horn. @@jane1975 300Hz sound signals are my favorite. That sound is very relaxing to hear especially if you are walking around a mile from a lighthouse that has one in foggy weather and hear it go off

In still fog, the echo's are amazing.

Replaced a long time ago- late 80s. The electric horns are cheaper, automatic and quicker to start/stop. The air tanks at Portland were removed during Covid to create more space for visitors. It's a sound that won't be heard there ever again.

I hear crickets, which is what you may be hearing, but I also hear a faint whistling sound twice. first at 0:05 and then again at 0:35

Try turning the volume towards maximum, if you cannot hear it. It was not very loud from that position - certainly less impressive than the original 'compressed air' foghorn!
