This video is about portrait artist of the year season 3, portrait artist of the year season 4, portrait artist of the year season 5 and portrait artist of the year season 6. These are some of my favorites and least favorites that were passed over or picked to move on.
So this covers some paintings from Portrait artist of the year season 2017, portrait artist of the year season 2018, portrait artist of the year season 2019 and portrait artist of the year season 2020.
The challenges are many . The sitter the setting and the demands of the judges which are inconsistent and sometimes baffling

I agree with your takes. It’s almost as if the judges ignore skill levels in hopes of championing a new avant-garde movement. Senseless!

I agree 100% with this video. I'm an artist, so I love watching this show. But I really should turn it off before the final three are chosen by these three crummy judges. They rarely choose a portrait for its quality or likeness. They want funky and edgy. Maybe it's jealousy because they, themselves, are so artistically untalented. I really wish the producers would change judges every season. I'm so over these three.

I watch it on Prime video which is part of Amazon. but you can find them by googling on RU-vid. The problem with that is that you cn nver find all of them or find them in sequence. I know they are filming one soon. The applications close this week. Want to enter? I would be terrified!

The judges are a joke and that is throughout all of the years. There against painting a true likeness, the artist with the best narrative wins, especially if they feel sorry for them. They are biased against professional artists. Tai-Shan cannot paint very well and he is obviously envious of those who paint representatively. There was a winning portrait artist of the year who painted a portrait in a violet magenta combo and black and white. Judges comment what a beautiful use of color and the portrait didn't look like the subject. I fast forward every episode to see their final analysis and I'm never disappointed because they always stick to their criteria. Landscape paintings are even worse

I feel the same way but found I love the program with the sound off. I like seeing artists work and how different we all are. I think I just hate the whole idea of judging art but that doesn't mean I can't have my own personal opinion. i just hope I provide valid reasons for why I prefer one piece over another.

@sherrylazaroff9084 , ALL THREE of them have questionable knowledge of what makes a painting a great painting. They choose " innovative", which doesn't usually mean accomplished. A great painting holds your gaze and locks into your heart like a magnet.

3:15 Poor guy got painted like a Simpsons character 7:28 And I'm sorry, but this is just a hideous portrait. It's like they took a regular portrait and smudged the middle. And then the way the artist did the body?! If I was judging, that artist wouldn't get my vote to even make it onto the episode

In the intro of S4 E1 the host quote the Tate gallery’s definition of a portrait- should represent a likeness, the personality, and possibly the mood of the sitter. Then they joke and one says - should we tell the judges. The other says -they won’t listen. I too have issue with the judges. They have said on both the portrait art and landscape artists of the year the work is to good. I love the show but take breaks from it because of the judging. I think they look for different for the sake of different. They need a guess judge to break up this mentality. Or change judges every few seasons.
