Excellent. Saying the camera is "cheating" isn't very encouraging. Vermeer and Caravaggio, and possibly Leonardo used the camera obscura, that's not cheating. Those that can,do, those that can't, criticize, or host a TV program.

@@Watkinsstudio I agree it can make him look isolated but if you look at it from the perspective of peace and accomplishments it gives it more of a serene feel. I think the jockey and the soldier are generic. Yes it is beautiful and perfect but it is common. 4 of them can do hyper realism. If i were a judge i will choose the one than can be me other flavor. The jockey is the most common skill, it's nothing new there. Most portrait artist can do realism to hyper realism.

Just because a painting features a bunch of drips, textures, and brush strokes doesn't necessarily mean that the artist who created it is more expressive or cutting edge or talented or that s/he has more potential than the artists who didn't highlight these elements.

Louie was the best, his colours, his talent of capturing light and shadow, his composision, his process... all absolutely outstanding but they have gone with "progress and sth new". I get it but we are not looking for best innovator, we are looking for the best painter and craftsmen. To me Nick was... struggling a bit and he didn't know exacly what he was doing. His painting was nice but it lack depth. Anyway, still happy of being able to watch this show!

The ballerina: beautiful composition. Beautiful face, beautiful everything. Very fresh although I was not able to find the focus of the composition. There were not a central point of attention to me. The jockey: beautiful expression of the face and look. Perfect capture of the personality. I think that the commissioner wanted some Horse to be insidethe scene, according to all the pictures shown during the visit. I think also that the jacket should have been less protagonist. The soldier: beautiful pose. Captured the strength of the character and his uniform. They insisted on this as the main goal of the commission. So I think they got what they wanted. The lawyer. A little bit small canvas to me. I would prefer another composition and a better sense of proportions. Although it was amazing how she managed to capture her serenity.

Very happy for Nick. As to the final piece, even he getting the most difficult portrait, to make a very formal painting, with a very modern technique, I still thought that the Ballerina was outstanding. Said that, still think that Nick deserved it and was cheering for him 'cause when you get the full picture from the first entry to the final, with all the different challenges, he was the one who showed more range. It's the same technique, but each portrait was unique, fresh and looks different.

I agree, the portrait of the athlete w/o his shirt, it didn't even look like him in the face. The cheeks were too wide. The judges kept going on and on about how amazing it was - I figured then he was going to win at least that episode, but didn't think he'could go all the way. Also, I think they seem to be negative on photo-realism works. They don't give the credit they deserve.

Not having yet watched this episode, and looking at the portrait's done while in France. I personally feel they have each allowed the opinions of the judge's and their insistence to " move forward " to force them away from who they are individually, thus losing that special something they each had as contemporary portrait artists.

There aren't many paintings which make you gasp when you see them, but Louis's paining of the ballerina did. It was absolutely delightful and beautiful, easily winning over the Soldier and the Jockey (which were nontheless both excellent works of art). One painting I didn't like was Selena's. She must try to escape from her crushed, dark blue, almost aggressive/depressive style of painting.
