Hi Rob! I am big fan of your talent.Your portraits full of life, amazing! I also portrait artist only I paint in oil. Thank you for sharing ,Tamara Geddes
Wow, that's an amaizing piece of work Mr. Wareing. Really like how you build the colors. Wonderful skills. Here's a simple question. Do you work with a specific brand of pastels, or just pick the colors you need from any one? Greetings from Colombia.
So much fun to see the topography of the human face rise up from the paper, however her lower lids are much fuller--making her eyes smaller than you depicted.
Thankyou for your comments I use fabercastell pastel pencils for the drawing the snguine and the darker one is sepia dark I favour nupastels to begin and finish with rembrandt rowney and unison pastels
Yes I agree with that, I also think its key to be able to draw just as well from imagination, this strengthens your ability like you wouldn't believe. Many jobs come from people who want there kid or pets done, and even though one may do a fantastic job, still its hard spending so much time on a picture realizing there are other guys out there just tracing the pic with a projector. So are you saying most of your work is done from life and not photos?
Its difficult whether to make a career out of this because so many guys out there trace the photos, how do you compete with that if you don't want to trace. But its nice your drawing this girl from life.
there isn't anything wrong with tracing. However, there is a right and a wrong way to do it in art. old masters used tracing as well as photographers. Any one can trace but not everyone can render a drawing after the guide lines have been traced, that is the main difference. whether an artist traces, uses a ruler, projector or grid, it doesn't matter as long as you render it correctly and achieve the style you are looking for. Tracing should only be used to save time and used for accuracy.
I like your style and how kind you were to your model. when i was little an artist painted a portrait of me but he kept shouting at me not to move and it was very frightening. :) but i'd love to have you draw me.
Nice painting. Does the DVD have a photo of the model, or show her at times during the painting so we can see what the artist is actually looking at when he puts down the strokes?
@WareingImages you did? i've seen that one at our school, but i never knew who the creator was, or if it wasn't that one then it sure as hell looks like it
Just a passing thought here...wonderful painter would have loved to hear what he was saying instead of music,,so many videos for me personally and that is just my opinion are spoiled by music when you are really watching to hear the wisdom of the artist,,,just a thought that is all,,
Asking a child to sit still for a portrait for more than 10 seconds is mean. I was trained to capture the main points in less than that and after that, the child was free to move for the next six minutes. Where I worked, we had to do a portrait in under seven minutes and our bosses timed us with a watch. This was Kamans in Busch Gardens.
Don't Criticize! asking a child to pose for more than 10 seconds is mean? you said - don't you mean 10 minutes? But even 10 minutes is not exactly bad - any way he is not working for any one like you might have been doing and he can take his time if he wants to. I don't care what you had to do! every Artist can do what they want and if they need more reference for their Art then so be it! I would never work for any one as a painter and be timed on progress - More the Fool You!

Could you tell me what pastels you used exactly. They looked much more precise than the sticks. beautiful drawing. I loved it best unblended so the strokes are visible. Really wonderful.
Sorry, I just saw your comments now. My name is Elaine. I manage the WareingImages channel. Sadly Rob passed away recently but , as I managed his career & ordered his art materials for many years I am familiar with his techniques. For the initial drawing he used Faber Castell Pitt pastel pencils, then moved on to Prisma Color Nu-Pastels. Then added softer pastels as he went along using assorted pastels from various manufacturers notably Unison, Rembrandt, Schminke & Sennelier. Although did use Rowney soft pastels as well at one stage, they changed their colours & consistency a few years ago and he did not like these so found alternatives from other manufacturers. He did bring out a video set “Capturing a Likeness” which you can download or live stream from our Vimeo channel vimeo.com/ondemand/robwareing . We are also planning a book on Pastel techniques retrospectively based on Rob’s teachings. If you would like to be kept informed about this please email wareingart@gmail.com
Great work, though I think the child's face is not as haughty, and rounder and puffier at the lower half of her face. I think the face looks too much more of an adult.
Fatto benissimo tecnica ottima....ma la bambina era diversa non sorrideva e nn era così magra e il taglio dei capelli diterso! Poi X capita prospettiva dimensioni perfette!e colori usati egregiamente! Bellissimo complimenti
Very nice work! I like your process! I see that you use pastel sticks but can you recommend any brand of pastel pencils? I use mainly charcoal and do some oil painting but I've only recently started pastels. I've tried derwent pastel pencils but find them too hard/rough.
Movies of this nature help make RU-vid incredible. They often make me chuckle. But the majority of dog owners are little by little KILLING their dogs!! The shit dog food companies put into pet food will cause varieties of cancer and makes dogs pass away early.. In order to save your dog’s life you ought to take a look at Double Life Dog Diet (Google it.)
All that some art instructors care about is modern art. They dont focus on the importance of anatomy. Your art is ispirational. I wish i had profesors that would focus more on this.
Great. I haven't worked on a pastel in years and only then they were still life ones, but just tonight I tried a couple of portraits. Drawing was good but pastel infill was rubbish. Then I found your vid. and I can see how I went wrong. I got bogged down in complications instead of keeping it simple like you, adding nice touches here and there. Thanks for the demo. I am looking forward to my next improved effort. (BTW I CAN do portraits, having done them in pencil and oils.)
bravo l'artiste très beau portrait , je salue également cette jeune fille qui a eu le courage de poser sans bouger ça a du être long pour elle félicitation a vous deux
amazing. amazing. i live in birmingham , how i can learn it from you this technique.please let me know. what is better way to do pastel. any way nice calm and cute model and you did a great job.
great work, i have just made the transition to pastels from using pencil for the past 5 or so years, how long would a drawing/painting like this take you to complete Rob?
I can't think of a more pleasant way to start my day. 'Love to watch you work so intelligently. I see your jaw moving ; I imagine you're talking your way through the decisions of which marks/colors to put down. Thanks for this video.
A true Master. Great Portrait, I enjoy also do some portraits but I am far way of thta pure art that you show. Can you tell me which are the colour of the Canson paper. Thank you! Keep sharing fine art with us.
