Assistant Curator of Kenwood, Louise Cooling, gives an online talk on the Portrait Miniatures at Kenwood, part of the great art collection at Kenwood House, London.
Louise Cooling’s talk entitled ‘The Heyday of the Portrait Miniature in Britain’ highlights the Draper Gift at Kenwood. This extraordinary gift, originally bequeathed in 1988 with twenty miniatures, now numbers over 100 portrait miniatures. The artists who executed them show their consummate skill in portraits worthy of comparison with the famous portraits of painted ladies by Gainsborough and Reynolds in the rooms at Kenwood. These less well-known treasures at Kenwood provide an important link between the personal belongings of Georgian society and the inhabitants of a house such as Kenwood in the 18th century.
Introduction and fade out music: ‘Three Miniatures’ for string quartet (1945) by Georgian composer Sulkhan Tsintsadze (1925 - 1991). Played by violinist Lisa Batiashvili accompanied by the Georgian Chamber Orchestra, and arranged for violin and orchestra by T. Batiashvili. Tsintsadze was one of Georgia’s foremost composers and his first composition, a collection of miniatures based on Georgian folk songs, was an immediate success.
