A RARE treat: WIllie Mays is the profile on the 1966 NL Pennant Race, as the Giants look to chase the Dodgers and Pirates. They come close, but fall just short. Original commercials included.

Awesome on so many levels! The great Chris Schenkel with dark hair. Loved the commercials kept in. Made it feel like u were watching it with ur Swanson TV dinner on ur TV tray in '67.

I was only 9 years old back in 1967, but even then, I would scour the TV listings for any and ALL sports-related programming. Especially anything having to do with Willie Mays. I wonder how I missed seeing this when it originally aired? This was excellent!

8:00 Giants manager Herman Franks so cavalierly calls 35 year old Mays, his team's 15-year Vet senior leader and Team Captain, a "boy" - doesn't even blink either, its so 1967 culturally routine for him.

My first baseball game at Wrigley Field against the Giants. Jenkins won, but Mays Homered. My dad let me know what a special thing it was to see Mays play. I used to love going to the Cubs/ Giants games Fergie v. Juan Marichal. What close hard fought games those were

Man, that was great. I have a fascination for that era mid and late sixties, especially music and sports scenes. Always want to hear and learn about it. But seeing clips of things as they happened i. e. tv shows (w/commercials), interviews, performances are definitely unbeatable.

Unbelievable! I've been taking about that play, where Willie caught the ball barehanded and threw Gilliam out at the plate by 10 feet, for decades because I was sitting in the centerfield bleachers right behind Willie at that game. Most people think I make it up to tout Willie. I remember it was Willie Davis that hit the single. Wills was lead off. He hit in front of Gilliam. This clip may wrong about the Wills part. Lou Johnson made a great defensive plat in the ninth inning for the Dodgers. Giants were down by one run. Koufax was still in the game. Willie hit a towering shot to left field that looked like a sure game tying homer until the wind knocked it straight down when it got to the fence. Johnson jumped up at the fence and couldn't catch it, but he knocked it back in play off of his glove a foot or more from above the top of the fence. Willie was stranded on base and Koufax finished a complete game win.

The seven-minute [and four second] frozen frame silence at the end really punctuated the drama of the production.

Did that manager call Willie a boy? At the time he was what 36? I guess he didn’t mean anything by it but Wow….RIP Willie

Ok, would it have been better if it were cowboys instead? That sure was prevalent on the screen back then, not to mention the detective shows that did a whole lot of that. Different times, wasn't a critical subject at that time. Had other issues, the Big V being one of them.

@@rtee48 There was some "gunplay" there too.
