Great video. You should really teach a course on "how to talk about art." You break things down in such an interesting way! Went to art school for 2 years and sat through some pretty ROUGH critiques. Rough as in, nobody knew what to say or how to say it.

Thanks so much for this series. Excellent work and I love the explanation of the entire process. Congratulations on your channel! Numbers are growing and soon you will be at the top. I love to paint the classical style. Many blessings and be safe. Question: do you at any time use any other medium other than linseed oil? If you do or you don’t, could you be so kind to elaborate a bit more? Thanks again and best wishes.
@stephenbaumanartwork
@stephenbaumanartwork 3 года назад
Thank you very much! I really only use linseed oil for painting. Sometimes on very special occasions I will add a drop or two of clove oil to slow the drying time.

Excellent video Stephen, thank you very much. I wonder if you recommend to use zinc white (or even mixed with other whites) in the first layers. For the lightest areas I already saw in the video that use flake white.

Great series! Thank you for all your detailed explanations. One thing I don't understand yet: What's the advantage of bringing warm colors like raw umber into the early stages of an underpainting. Why not using greyscales only, right from the start? Isn't the reason to do it in greyscale to fully focus on values and not beeing distracted by color, warm, cold etc... ?
@stephenbaumanartwork
@stephenbaumanartwork 2 года назад
Color is a complex subject- introducing temperature in a grisaille allows you to confront it in a more simple context.

So raw umber and lead whie dry faster than other paints. Does that mean you don't have to use drying meduims like liquin with them?
