This is one of my all time favourite paintings. her eyes are so alive and dreamy at the same time.

To me the most amazing thing is her smile. I couldn't. Capture it when I painted it. Also is his use of blue values because blue pigments were'nt easily available . Maybe on his time he had them but again the smile is key element.

Vermeer's half-turning subject seems caught in time, as well as caught by surprise. Blackness and brilliant light surround her. She's not really smiling, not in her eyes, not with her mouth. Not a conventional beauty, but completely compelling. The almost non-existent eyebrows and the large eyes are for me, the most memorable aspect of this powerfully composed painting. Excellent demonstration, especially the delicate skin tones around the eyes.

One of the things I always come back to is the colours in her clothing, mainly the warms and cools in her top. The vibrancy of the yellows and what looks like desaturated blues just conveys the fabric so well and the colours really get to me. To be honest the painting as a whole, at face value, is just a painting to me. It’s the individual things within it on their own when looked at from an artists perspective that get my brain going, for example; how did Vermeer manage to get those tones down so perfectly? The shapes and tones in the clothes are the best things about this painting to me, the blocking shapes in the headband and the rounded and fluffy shapes on her top, they just look so flavourful. Almost like I can touch them.

What I find most captivating: There are four pearlescent shapes in this painting: the earring, the two eyes, and the bottom lip. The girl's facial features are the same teardrop shapes as the pearl itself. It's a synecdoche. I think that's very Baroque.

You finally did it, man! 😍 It's awesome. I think what I love most in this painting is the mysterious feel of the composition, as you said. Makes me wanna know more about the girl, where she was, what's the story. But I think most people think that, anyway. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for the lovely tutorial. Can we complete the entire painting with acrylic paints? Would the techniques differ?
@katjam6820
@katjam6820 3 года назад
The techniques would definitely differ since acrylic dries so much more quickly! This means that you can’t blend areas together later like he does here, instead you have to do it right away :)

Thanks for this excellent tutorial! I especially enjoyed your assessment of the difference between acrylic and oil painting. Last year I did a copy of the work, and was happy with it except for the age of my subject! Instead of 'The Girl' I got 'The Young Lady'. I would say you got much closer: 'The Teenager'. So my question is how do we achieve a younger portrait? What is the difference between a girls face and an adult face? Thanks!

What I like the most is who was she. See looks at him totally unveiled as if she knows him. There's just a hugh mystery about this painting. I read this is called a tonie (?) and she has on a custom people didn't dress that was back then. I've painted this but not as efferly as you did. Incidentally the collar goes further around her neck. You have to look close to see it. But your version is incredible. Just lovely. naw Venmeer didn't use the camera obscura, he didn't need to. He was too good.

First of all, thanks for the great demo but I have a few criticisms: The blue headscarf in the original is clearly a transparent glaze with the underpainting showing through. Also, the drawing issues with your painting bother me: 1. The chin is too big. 2. The mouth is too far away from the nose. 3. The cranium is too small. 4. The eyebrows are also incorrect. You would have got better results if you printed the image on transfer paper.
@penelopegallardo5386
@penelopegallardo5386 4 года назад
Stephen Griffin. The reason for these differences lays on the artists unique psychological view of the subject.. This means that if You were to paint it(unless you trace it),there would be differences as well.
@LuvHrtZ
@LuvHrtZ 4 года назад
@@penelopegallardo5386 Spare me the bullshit, Penelope. The drawing issues I mentioned have nothing to do with the artist's interpretation. They are just plain bad drawing. Painting an opaque blue over the headscarf is a technical mistake for this type of painting. That colour in the original is transparent. The purpose of a grisaille underpainting is so you can glaze semi-opaque and transparent colours over the top and add detail later. It is, generally, a soft underpainting. PS: Vermeer used a camera obscura type of device to project and trace the contours of the subject onto his canvas. It seems logical to me that a great idea would be to reflect this process accurately from start to finish.
@maiarafloresart
@maiarafloresart 4 года назад
Sorry, Man. I prefer seeing the differences between the study and the original. To me it's admirable, it has personality and the awesome thing is exactly the fact that is not transferred/traced as a simple copy. But I respect your opinion :)

it takes quite a bit more to paint like vermeer - still you made an effort for what it is - a quick painting. Imagine you would actually take a month and longer to finish - what it could be if you would not rush the process

A serious painter should never put oil over acrylic, period. Why would you want to put oil paint down on a film of plastic that will shrivel and delaminate over decades? You may as well paint on a plastic bag pulled over a stretcher. Acrylic is made from plastic, an absurd medium for any archival purpose.
