PORTREATH CORNWALL | A hidden gem located between St Ives and St Agnes with a beautiful beach, rugged coastline and popular with holidaymakers, day trippers and surfers. Portreath is a charming village and fishing port situated on the north coast of Cornwall, England. The village boasts a beautiful sandy beach and a rich mining history.
Portreath Beach is a two-mile stretch of golden sand, perfect for swimming, sunbathing, surfing, and bodyboarding. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards during the summer season, making it a safe and enjoyable place for families.
Portreath Harbour was once a thriving port for the mining industry. Today, the harbor is a popular spot for boat trips, fishing charters, and watersports activities.
Learn about Portreath's mining heritage at The Engine House, a museum housed in a restored steam engine house. The museum offers interactive exhibits that tell the story of the Cornish mining industry.
Portreath is a popular surfing destination, with waves suitable for both beginners and experienced surfers. Several surf schools in the village offer lessons and board rentals.
Portreath is surrounded by stunning scenery, making it a great base for exploring the Cornish countryside. Take a walk along the South West Coast Path, a national trail that offers breathtaking views of the coastline. Or, explore Tehidy Woods, a local nature reserve with a network of trails.
While Portreath itself doesn't boast a vast number of top-tier visitor attractions, the surrounding area offers a wealth of things to see and do:
Portreath Beach: As mentioned previously, this two-mile stretch of golden sand is the main attraction. Here you can relax, swim, sunbathe, or try your hand at surfing or bodyboarding.
The Engine House: Explore Portreath's mining heritage at this fascinating museum. Learn about the history of mining in Cornwall and see some of the machinery that was used to extract tin and copper from the mines.
Tehidy Woods: Take a walk or bike ride through these beautiful woods and discover a variety of plants, wildlife, and historical sites. The woods are also home to a sculpture trail, which features works by contemporary artists.
Carn Brea: Carn Brea is a granite hill that offers panoramic views of the surrounding area. There is a monument on the summit of the hill, which was built in the 18th century.
Porthtowan Beach is a popular surfing beach located a few miles away from Portreath. The beach is backed by sand dunes and cliffs, and there are a number of surf schools and shops in the village.
Godrevy Head is a headland that juts out into the Celtic Sea. The headland is home to Godrevy Lighthouse, which was built in the 19th century. The lighthouse is a popular spot for wildlife watching, as seals and seabirds can often be seen in the area.
The St Agnes Heritage Coast is a section of coastline that has been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The area is home to a number of beaches, coves, cliffs, and mining sites.
Heartlands is a regeneration project that has transformed a former china clay mine into a vibrant eco-park. The park offers a variety of activities and attractions, including a sculpture park, a lake, and a cafe.
Truro is the capital of Cornwall and is located a short drive from Portreath. The city is home to a number of historical attractions, including Truro Cathedral and the Royal Cornwall Museum.
Falmouth is a port town located on the south coast of Cornwall. The town is home to a number of maritime attractions, including the National Maritime Museum Cornwall and Pendennis Castle.

I spent three years serving at RAF Portreath from 1982 to 1985. I loved my time in Cornwall, it was a lovely little camp and a lovely little village.

Thank you for showing Portreach. I loved the expansive beach. The village is not as pretty as some places but l still enjoyed it. I loved the houses on the hillside.

As soon as I saw the harbour I didn't need smelly vision as I could remember the terrible smell. We went to Portreath 4 or 5 years ago and it was the same. Thought we were unlucky but obviously not. Terrible for the people who live there. Would be dubious about swimming in the sea. Such a shame as it is a magnificent place, we wouldn't go back and probably not the only ones. Really enjoying your Cornwall series Neil, thank you

the smell in. the harbour is at low tide. when the sun is out it heats up the kelp seaweed which omits the smell. i grew up around there.

Great video of my favourite place. You could have walked straight down the main road to the beach, better than a maze as you called it lol. There’s a couple of lovely Cafes at the top of the stairs that lead down to the beach. Well worth going to, they do some really fab food and drinks. The Harbour, just like most Harbours smell because of the accumulation of Seaweed, unfortunately it doesn’t get cleared now like it used to but anyone who knows anything about Harbours is fully accepting that some days it smells worse than others. The Waterfront is still in business but as you’ve seen, Portreath as a whole is a pretty quiet little place but does usually get busier during the Summer months. Sadly due to the costs of everything having risen over the last couple of years, people are opting for cheaper holidays abroad and Coastal places like Portreath will suffer.

Hi. The harbour always smells like that at low tide, it's the seaweed, there used to be more seaweed but the farmers take it to put on there land.

The reason it stinks is because the sewage outlet comes out in portreath,worse in warm weather
@GimbalWalkTV

Oh no! 🤮🤮
@shorey66
@shorey66 3 месяца назад
That is not at all true. The sewerage outfall is further around the coast around by Ralph's cupboard. The smell is due to decaying seaweed as it has been for the past 40 years I've lived here. The seaweed is periodically removed at low tide by The harbour association by JCB. It's true the harbour can pong on some hot days but it doesn't extend much further than the houses surrounding the harbour.
@fatfish6839
@fatfish6839 3 месяца назад
No its not its the rotting seaweed in the harbour at low tide The old sewer pipe has not been used in years Please get your facts correct before you put down my village!!
@shorey66
@shorey66 3 месяца назад
@@fatfish6839 it's my village as well bud, I've lived here 40 years. You know full well sww pump untreated water into the sea near Portreath and elsewhere around the coast. I'm not putting the village down at all, I'm pointing out that the smell is simply due to seaweed not sewerage. Read comments more carefully before popping off on people.
