It changed a few years ago. Outrageously expensive. I left 2 years ago for Maine. Back in the 1960s/70s was a pretty shady place. It's rapidly being overbuilt. Downtown is a tourist mecca. Manufacured homes are selling for close to half a million bucks in one park. It's beautiful and historic, for sure, but average folks are priced out by wealthy retirees.

Yes...home prices have really shot up & they were already an expensive area ,(southern Maine)...but there are a few towns further north of Portland where one might be able to afford

We moved to the Lakes Region of NH from California in 2019. One block from the lake, twice as much house, for not much more than we paid for half the size 10 years ago. Small town. Low crime. Nice neighbors. No traffic. The farms selling produce, dairy, eggs, meat, etc. are absolutely wonderful. We made the conscious decision to "go where nobody else is going" after sitting in L.A. traffic for four hours, missing Thanksgiving dinner and it was the best decision we ever made. If winter is keeping the crowds away, I'm all for winter.

Lake living is my dream come true, especially considering the cost of living in Portsmouth. I also reside in CA, Walnut Creek/East bay, but the thought of moving clear across the country scares me a bit. Definitely retiring in 1 1/2 years or maybe sooner, but being a Chicago girl I love the 4 seasons. Having fresh produce sounds lovely and healthy. Thanks for the tip!

I lived in New England for 15 years, and spent all my days off in Portsmouth. I had friends that had businesses, and friends that worked in stores, restaurants ... It's one of my favorite places ever. When my Mom and Sister visited, we always spent the first day in Boston (they'd fly into Logan), and we'd always spend at least one day in Portsmouth. I can't say enough great things about it ... Strawbery Banke, the Paul Revere house .... SO much to do and see, and so many great restaurants. Twilight harbor cruises. Of course rentals and homes were already soaring in the mid-80s when I first moved there. I never lived IN Portsmouth, but I was always close enough to go spend the day there.

I was born in Massachusetts, but spent most of my school years in Vermont. I left after graduating High School, and have only been back to New England to visit occasionally. Now that I'm older I am thinking about moving back. New Hampshire and Maine are the two States that I am seriously considering. Thank you very much for posting videos like this.

NH is by far more tax friendly for retirees as opposed to ME and I have studied every state in the nation. NH is also at the top of the list, along with VT, for being the most climate crisis protected. Unfortunately VT is not tax-friendly for retirees in the least and possibly a bit too rural for my taste. I wish you luck in making the right decision, but your history living in New England is clearly to your benefit. NH is at the top of my retirement list but moving clear across the country from CA will take some serious planning and logistics. At least being from Chicago, I grew up with the 4 seasons and lots of snow. However, I'm not sure if NH is Miata convertible friendly.

Porstsmouth is beautiful and charming, but every time we visit it seems twice as crowded as the time before, even in the "off" seasons. Also, houses are extremely expensive.

I thought the same thing when I visited in September '18, quaint and charming, but told me son, who was house sitting for a friend in Cape Elizabeth, that I wasn't sure I could live in such a touristy town. Being extremely concerned about climate change, VT & NH are the top contenders for avoiding the effects but VT is not tax friendly for retirees whereas NH is, aside from property taxes. Possibly lake living away from the hustle and bustle of tourists and high prices is the answer. Still stuck in CA but dreaming of retirement and NH is lovely.

Moved to NH seacoast in 1976 and bought a 2 acre lot in Stratham for $10000. My mortgage from Indian Head bank was 8.5%. We built a three bedroom bath and 1/2, gambrel three flue center chimney all oak floors $42000. Portsmouth was actually cheaper than Stratham, Greenland, Exeter, Hampton or New Market. Kittery and Portsmouth houses were between 35-60K. Times have changed 😂😂😂😂😂

I just went there this summer and the traffic of cars and pedestrians was comparable to being just outside of Boston … they literally charge for street parking up there. Could not believe I was in New Hampshire. I think you are already too late if buying there.

While visiting Cape Elizabeth ME in 2018, I was fortunate to have visited the charming town of Portsmouth, and have kept this charming seaside town on my radar ever since. Pros, it leans democratic and NH is tax-friendly for retirees. Cons, rentals are quite expensive and most don’t even offer garage parking. I reside in CA and would never live where garage parking was not offered. Buying? Too expensive for my budget, even though I have planned well for retirement. Another con is that because of it's charm it's quite touristy. And then there are the high property taxes in NH, giving one pause. I'm still considering NH, probaby not Portsmouth, but am hoping the state leans more liberal in the coming years. Possibly moving closer to a lake might be the answer with occasional trips to lovely Portsmouth and Boston. I am a city girl by nature, being from Chicago, but retirement is supposed to be less stressful, right?

@@Rentcollector Well, I am not the problem, but the well is already poisoned and most MA freemen are looking elsewhere now. At best, NH is a stopgap. ME has already signed on to a su1c1dal climate policy that most of its residents can’t afford and that is the reason many people are leaving MA. NH is still great but is becoming unaffordable for many people. I look at houses in Portsmouth and they are listing for more than a similar house in Eastern MA.

Greetings and Happy New Year . Hope 2024 is great for you sir ? Your family and followers here on your channel. I am a 66 year old native born New Yorker from the Bronx. I have lived in a few places in this country of ours. N.Y. California, Arizona, Salem Massachusetts. And currently ? Albuquerque NM. I've actually been here for a few decades. I can honestly say? Having the blessings to at a part of my Life in the Great New England states in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts? I loved it then that was way back in the early 80s. I at the time worked in the ambulance business in Revere Massachusetts and drove through many neighboring communities in and around Boston . I thought it was a great place in my view? Cleaner than N.Y.C. I'm sure there are a few native New Yorkers that have relocated to there that would agree. I lived in Salem Massachusetts and in Byfield Massachusetts. I plan to make a visiting trip in the summer of 2024 back to the Future??? Lol uh Northeast region . I am super glad I discovered your channel and the wealth of your knowledge regarding New Hampshire. I would love to move to a town there that's not too expensive to live as I'm getting up there in my later years of life. I'm still able to work as I have a CDL class B and have in the past 12 years driven motorcoaches in N.M. ? Texas? And Arizona with a very clean driving record. But that said? Albuquerque and New Mexico is one of the top 5 states for unfortunately poverty. The crime here has been bad per the population here. Plus we in the city do not have enough uniform Police officers to serve and protect the citizens in the Albuquerque area to which the population is around? 800,000. So in short? I'd like to look further into some of the towns and communities there in the Granite state. If you could? Please feel free to give some suggestions? Regarding the state there and some ideas on relocating to there that would be greatly appreciated. One last thing ? How is the medical base system there in providing quality medical care to the citizens both the young? And us few slightly older folks? Again? Great video post? And thank you for sharing your view from the prospective of a native New Englander . Grazie. Again? Happy New Year. 👋😎

Do us, the residents, a huge favor - DO NOT MOVE HERE. It's gentrified beyond probably all hope at this point. Natives to the area, like myself, are not likely to stay here much longer. People surely ARE moving here - rich folks from Boston who want a "quaint" getaway or some such. It's rapidly being destroyed.

Do you know what I like best about Portsmouth? Watching the videos. It is so pretty. So charming. So peaceful. IN THE VIDEOS. Actually going there, dealing with traffic and parking issues, and on and on.... not so good. But VIDEOS ARE GREAT! Plus, Portsmouth and similar communities have priced themselves out of a reasonable market for most home buyers (and I won't even get into property tax issues). And can we PLEASE stop with the whole "winter" thing? Yes, believe it or not, this part of the country has WINTER. It isn't even that bad compared to many other places that have... WINTER. LOL Overall, New England is pretty mild in all seasonal aspects compared to many other parts of the country that have true extremes.

But the houses are not cheap and neither are the real estate taxes and insurance. With high interest rates on mortgages I think that Portsmouth will be safe at least until President Trump moves back into the White House. Psst.
