Shalom my brother, this video was GREAT! You gave me alot more building blocks to connect my family history. My great grandfather is Rothchild "Polly" Francis who aside from being known in St Thomas as The civil rights activist who fostered the "Organic act" 1936 He printed a Newspaper called The Emacipator 1925. He married a Portuguese woman named Aurora who is my great grand mother and I do not know her maiden name. I am very interested in tracing my Jewish heritage and I think she may be the blood line descendant that connects me to the land of Israel! Madera may hold some keys. Thank you again!
You've provided a rich backdrop here, and thank you for the tip about Ms. Ferreira's work. How amazing is it that you made that connection with your wife's relative in Madeira?? This kind of stuff is what the internet is for! My daughter's family tree project just reopened my love for genealogy, and there's far more to learn on this subject than I even have time for right now (I'm sitting up VERY late!) What I already know is that my grandmother's father was born in Trinidad, and had a French first name and a Portuguese last name. My grandmother's mother was born in St. Vincent with, by coincidence, the same Portuguese last name. Both of my grandmother's parents made their way to New York, where my grandmother was born and brought up Catholic. She still received letters from cousins in the Caribbean in her elderly years. She's the relative I look most like -- the Portuguese DNA is strong! I'll have to get out the copies of old pictures to see if there are more names to research...and maybe try to find out who those cousins were?? Interestingly, I'm in Hawaii with the "Podagee" heritage from sugar cane plantation days in the cultural salad...the surnames are so familiar now. There's locally made Portuguese sausage here, and Portuguese bean soup is a traditional dish. Historically, Portuguese plantation laborers were made luna (overseers) of other laborers coming mostly from Asian countries. The Portuguese were also important in the development of paniolo (cowboy) culture. So fascinating to dive deep and connect with places and history on a personal level....
