The first reference to the place of Esposende (Espano Zindi) appears in 1220, when 2 or 3 couples inhabited the site of the new Foz do Cávado, motivated by the silting of its previous mouth.
During the reign of D. Sebastião in the 16th century, Esposende became a town.

At the end of the century. In the 16th century there would be around 60-80 ships in Esposende, and it was these sailors who ordered the construction of the Chapel of Senhor Jesus dos Mareantes in the current Church of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Esposende.
