IBERIA (where Portugal and Spain are situated) was divided in 4 or 5 independent kingdoms. One of them was the LION KINGDOM. PORTUGAL proclaimed its independence from the LION KINGDOM, NOT FROM SPAIN. BECAUSE SPAIN DIDNT EXIST YET. AFTER that SPAIN managed to unify all those independent Kingdoms and the result was SPAIN. Today we have VERY GOOD relationship with Spain. Even our late monarchy is very related with spanish monarchy because they used to marry with each other in order to make peace. Hello Swesi. It is my understanding that this anthem was composed as an answer to a threat from the UK over the colonies in Africa. I don't think it would have gone very well for the UK from what I figure as to how tight Portugal is with a few of the nations there.
It was written as a protest song against the British for their foiling of the Pink Map plan, which was a portuguese expansionist plan to unite Angola on west Africa to Mozambique to the east, which impacted on the British plan to make a railway connecting Egypt (if I'm not mistaken) to South Africa. On the original poem it is "Contra os Bretões, marchar! Marchar!" (Against the brittons, march! March!) instead of "Contra os Canhões, marchar! Marchar!"

It didn't come to war. There was (still is) a centuries old alliance between Portugal and England, besides, England at the time would've oblitterated Portugal in a war, so I don't think it was ever even an option. Nothing lost, nothing gained for Portugal, except a bruised ego.
