I adopted a puppy that I found on the street. I've had her for 10 years without knowing she was a portuguese podengo. I hadn't heard of that breed before that. She's the best dog ever. So energetic. 11 years old and still runs around like a puppy.
This is exactly what happened to us. Someone saw the pequeño size on the TV yesterday and sent me a note saying it looked exactly like our adopted dog ‘Stevie Mix’. We adopted her from a kill shelter in 2015. She had been wandering the streets during the winter. They estimated her to be 1.5-2 at the time. She’s a great little dog!
Saw a beautiful dog running with a bunch of chihuahuas in my neighborhood. Two months later I saw him wandering around near my house, everyone stamping their feet at him. I took him in ten years ago and found one oh the best friend I’ve ever known. I went to Home Depot and showed the guy and Plumbing my problem on my iPhone, I so doing he saw my dog in some adjacent photos and said “do you have a podengo?“ I said, I think I do he said “I have a podengo!“ I said, where do you get him He said “I found him“ where? Very close by. I said I live close by! That’s how I got my dog I found him. The guy says does your dog catch birds? I said I come home and he sitting next to a pile of pigeon feathers in the living room, and I asked him if he enjoyed his lunch to which replies by burping. The guy goes my dog was on a leash, and he jumped up in mid air and grabbed a bird, I said that’s a podengo… Beautiful dog. He loves being groomed. I had to get him fixed. At the veterinarians office, I said this dogs, eyes glow, cherry red when you get him mad. Also, around food, his eyes glow cherry red. The doctor said that’s not happening. I’m not making things up. This animal has eyes that iridesce red when angry or around food. All my dogs are foundlings.
Sweet, kind, shares their time with all family members, loves meeting other dogs and humans, very active without being exhausting, best breed of all, imho.
I found mine abandoned, she was so depressed and anxious. Now when I see her energy, intelligence and her playful funny characteristics i didn't know she had it in her. This breed can outrun you with their speed they are so well behaved, curious, loyal dog I have had 😁
We adopted our Pendengo in Portugal from the city pound. We were told he was about 7 yrs old so will be around 10yrs now. We love him so much, he loves his cuddles and being close to us. He sometimes suffers from anxiety and during those times he follows me absolutely everywhere. He has a real stubborn streak too but we wouldn’t change him for anything. He’s a médio size and long haired which needs brushing regularly. Absolutely recommend this breed.
I live in USA and my mother has one also a medium sized short hair so definitely not impossible to find. She took it from somebody who had her for 6 years and couldn't take it to her new apartment. My mom's had her for about 5 years now and she's the sweetest, most loyal, playful, adorable dog, she just has the biggest heart. But as sweet as she is she's still super protective of the family with strangers. Super smart also. Definitely the best dog my mom's ever had lol
@@GasGotti p.s. it's great to find a dog you really want, but you should really look into adopting!!! The dog never ever forgets and will be forever loyal and grateful to you. All the animals I've ever had as well as my mom have been not necessarily an "adoption" but all circumstances where somebody couldn't keep their pet for whatever reason and trust me there's certainly no shortage of those situations unfortunately... in my experience, it's been much more rewarding than buying my dream dog on for $800 on craigslist or whatever. The dog may not be as cute, or young, may be a mutt or whatever, but I promise they'll love you just the same (if not more) than the "papered" purebred dog.
I got a Podengo given to me from a Portuguese couple in Serra de Estrella. Best dogs in the world, wouldn't change a thing, they're both intelligent and loving and always come up with surprises for you.
I have a medium sized Podengo (he weighs about 18 kgs). His name is Romeo. He's the kindest, sweetest and funniest dog. He always wants to play, and is always ready for a cuddle. He's such a wonderful companion. The only down side is that he barks a lot... and he's very loud. But that's something I'm ok with. I love him with all my heart, and yeah it's definitely my favorite breed (yes I am biased).
Whenever we hug our wire haired Podengo Robbie always trots over and stands on his hind legs to be included in the hug. A very loving and loyal breed, likes to chew shoes though.
The most popular breed of my Portugal ! My grandfather still being hunter and since i remember he have more than 6 "Podengos" or as many call them "pêlo de arame"! This is an unbelivable breed, wen they feel the smell of any rabbit not even the brambles can stop these breed. When well teached they hunt in pack and help the hunter man to know where the rebbits are.. They use to be very skinny because hunters control the food they give to their podengos so that they have a keen sense of smell at the time of hunting! I adopted a scruffy skinny street dog that turned out to be a Wirehaired Podengo Medio. He is everything you describe, and more. He has gotten out of my yard and his doggie daycare by jumping incredibly high. I read they are the kangaroo of dogs. If you adopt one, make sure you have very high fences to ensure they don’t go looking for you like mine did one day!
I just discovered the camera on Google search and I'm so happy I did I've been trying to find out what kind of breed my Bella is and now I am so thankful to you for the info on the Portuguese Podengo and she has all the qualities and she can't stand for me to give my attention to any other dog. I really like my Podengo. I currently have 6 living in Oklahoma in the United States. We have 3 Pequeno and 3 Grande and have raisedd several litters to spread around this country.

In June I picked a Podengo puppy from street water pipe she was about to die and she was may be one month old, now she is 4months and healthy now I'm looking a boyfriend for her 😂😂, Podengo are lovely 🐶🐶!!
Thank you for your vidéo. I live in Canada, and in apartment. I have a Podengo Pequeno, 7 months old. I have 2 questions. It’s very cold in Canada in Winter and the little dog seems not like it. Is it safe for her, or she will never appreciate? I go out very often for a long walk when the weather is good, but can they live in apartment, and for the Pequeno taking a long walk is sufficient? Sorry for my bad English.
Could you please make a video Barrocal Algarvio (Portuguese 🇵🇹 breed)? It is a rare breed that resembles a fox like appearance and other breeds (like border collie) and it almost went extinct. If you created a video on it, it could spread awareness about the situation. They are currently in recovery process.
Thanks for the tip. I will try to contact some owners if they would provide me with info and photos of the breed. I can not promise it that i will actually make the video as i dont know if i will have enough materials from the owners, but i will definitely try to make it.
As an owner of a large portugies owner they do make good pets Though we got a rescue one from the streets His name is scruff and we believe that he had a harsh past as hes deathly afraid of babys,bikes and joggers Though he is very smart and has sadly escaped from home a few times but he now knows where hes loved and accepted Plus copying dog training shows do work on him😂
Eu tenho um podendo médio de pelo cerdoso...até hoje , e tenho 55 anos, sempre tive cães e este, é sem dúvida o mais inteligente, mais meigo e mais tudo...amo o meu Lucky q já tem 11 anos e meio, e é mais que muitos humanos.
We think our little rescue mix from Tenerife has a lot of a Podengo Pequeño in her 🤣 she looks exactly like one, but I guess there must be something else in the mix, most people would rather sell a pure bread dog than tie it at the middle of the night in front of a shelter... We love her to pieces, she is the best dog we could ever imagine having.
