Part 5 of my Portulacaria Afra (Dwarf Jade) I started from a cutting in 2018. In this video I pruned it a few times and just let it develop.

I have 2 “ports” of a similar size and they’ve given me 20 plus mame cuttings , too many for me to cope with so if anyone needs one let me know ! I am led to believe they’re from South Africa and have developed the ability to regrow so vigorously as they are feasted upon by elephants … how true that is I don’t know. Thanks for the video !! Another excellent watch.

yeah that all sounds right. and yes the cuttings hahah. its very easy to end up with a forest!! and hopefully some one will take them off you :)

I’ve got one of these myself just before Christmas… initially it lost most of its leaves (scaring!) but now it’s full of new buds/little leaves! Waiting for temperatures to warm up a little more to repot it in a larger container and possibly taking some cuttings! Very helpful and inspirational video as always! Really powerful trunk and beautiful root flare! ☝️

yeah thats what mine did. i took it as a cutting and about a week later it looked dead, but clearly it bounced back. once it gets a bit sunnier yours will take off!

Looks like a strong year for your PA, brother. I’m curious as to why you shut down the growtent this winter. I’ll check your webpage for any details, if you have it posted there.
@BackGardenBonsai
@BackGardenBonsai Год назад
cheer. it wasnt shut down, just lowered a good bit. gives the trees a rest, gives the bills a rest (although the light is like having a tv on, so it fine) and then it gives me a rest, as now i need to water less. hahah

Thats a cool tree bud. My favourite I love them. I think you get that close foliage by using the grow lamp. Mines no where near that close.

May not be a tree, but this portulacaria is looking more tree-like each year! The bark striation is particularly handsome alongside the compact growth. That vigour must really keep you on your toes in summer lol!
@BackGardenBonsai

cheers Sue, yeah i dont pay enough attention to the bark, im still blinded by its fast pace haha

I am testing how much "molar clay" i can use and some of my plants are in 75%-80% and after i did it i got worryed i may lose some but seeing your mix i am sure i will be fine lol i can see the compost/organic in my mix. Again thsnk you for sharing
@roror88
@roror88 Год назад
For me in NL/EU climate 75/80% moller with 20% organic/compost/potting ground is in winter is to water logged. I use some perlite and some split basalt in the mix.
@BackGardenBonsai
@BackGardenBonsai Год назад
yeah you have to play around with it. make sure its not too wet in winter and not too dry in summer. some people use 100% molar, so you could even do that. i like the perlite too, i think 100% would get too compact quickly for my liking. but if you can manage the water correctly it would work no problem

@@BackGardenBonsai I've got a mix of little trees growing in 100% clay, but they are all shohin or smaller. I've got an experimental horse chestnut growing in calcium based cat litter and it's still going but is a bit stunted. it's a balancing act with nutrition, water and managing growth. there are a lot more qualified people that will explain it way better than I could.

Just got one as my first bonsai tree, very excited and your videos have been extremely useful for reference and tips. Still don't know much haha. Especially about when to fertilise and how it will fare on my window sill.

Strong little bugger. Are these the most aggressive succulents in terms of their growth?
@BackGardenBonsai
@BackGardenBonsai Год назад
I think so. I dont think ive seen any other species that are faster to develop. i think they these are the kings of speed

I am growthing one in 100% perlite. Out of all of my ports that one has the best roots. Roots are pearl white. It is also growing evenly and 100% radical from cut site. Its going to go bananas once i pin it ebihara method and put it in a 5 gallon pot. Its currently in an 6 or 8 inch plastic bonsai pot. I love ports.
@BackGardenBonsai
@BackGardenBonsai Год назад
yeah that sounds awesome! ports are the best, they grow so well and are just a joy

Do you grow this under grow lights all year, or do you put it outside during the summer?
@BackGardenBonsai
@BackGardenBonsai Год назад
yeah i just keep it inside. easier to control the light, temp and water that way. i think if i put it outside it wouldnt like it
