Thanks for the review. I have been wanted to upgrade from a fitness hybrid to a road or gravel bike for a while, but $2000 - $2400 for an entry level bike of a more known brand just isn't in my budget right now. But, finding a $1000 bike is awesome. It also seems to be extremely upgradable as me experience and budget increases. Thanks again!!

The group set is Advent X, which is pretty decent. The cassette is 11 to 48. It was kind of weird having such a jump between gears at first but I’ve come to appreciate the range in a 1x. I’ve not weighed it myself, but I’ve read it’s about 24 lbs. I’m still swapping out parts on it, mainly because I like messing around with bikes. Btw, I’ve constantly heard 38 or 40 mm is max tire width on this, but I’ve got 700x45 Donnelly gravel tires on mine and there’s still plenty of clearance.

Thanks! It’s definitely a great intro bike. The drop bar is fine in my opinion for sitting up when you use the hoods. I'm considering this bike but am concerned about higher speeds as I will mostly be on the road. I've never been a road biker and the single chain ring up front has me bugging out. Is this decent for road riding? How much was it to upgrade the front to your liking?
@ThePsycholist
@ThePsycholist 2 года назад
You will definitely need a bigger chainring up front for hilly road use in my opinion. You can go as cheap or expensive as you want in terms of upgrading the crankset. You could just get a bigger chainring for the stock crankset, which will be the cheapest option, or upgrade the whole crankset. It has a threaded bottom bracket and will support pretty much any crankset you want. I have a 48T on mine which has been great for any road use. As far as riding on the road, the bike rides great! It’s comfortable but won’t be the fastest due to its slightly higher weight. I enjoy long rides on the road with it though because it’s very smooth, stable, and comfortable. You won’t regret getting this bike for any kind of riding! Thanks for watching!

@ThePsycholist
@ThePsycholist 3 года назад
Thank you! You should be able to just change the chainring with the crankset that comes with the bike. I don’t remember the BCD for that so you should just double check. And yeah deff would need a longer chain! The larger chainring really helps for road use

I just got this bike and as I read all the glowing reviews I feel like I am missing something. I have been riding old Trek rigid mountain bikes on logging roads for the last 25 years. Before that I had a pretty decent 10 speed. This thing feels much slower on pavement than the ten speed and off pavement the old Trek is a hundred times more fun. I am hoping the tires it came with are why it feels so slow on pavement. I might swap them out for some slicks. If that helps I will just use it as a road bike. Otherwise I am thinking of selling it and cutting my losses. A bike is just too big of a purchase to make without seeing it first.

@tibbar1000 Месяц назад
@@edwardkenway8143 yes I changed the tires and I ended up really liking the bike. It isn’t much like I expected but it turned out to be a blessing. I got fired and lost my company vehicle. I put road tires on the X and it was my only transportation for 8 months. I put 32 mm slicks from Continental with about 80 pounds of pressure in them and it rode a lot like my old ten speed from high school. I love the bike ; it’s just different from what I had imagined. Still, if I had gotten it with flat bars and put 42 mm tires on it I think I would enjoyed that setup too.

At $700 it has its value. That being said the bike is heavy. The internal brake cable in the fork is a poor design placement especially for a cable driven disk brake. The brakes themselves are cheap and thats what you get for that price. The microshift drivetrain is heavy , not smooth compared to sram or shimano. The only highlight is the clutch on the rear derailleur. The wheels are very cheaply made and not in my eyes ready to ride out of the box. The hubs did not roll/spin smoothly at all and the spoke tension was so bad that one ride made the wheels become out of true. It's a decent starting point I guess but it needs upgrades to reallly enjoy on a daily basis. If I rated it on a 5 star scale I would go 2 1/2 stars and mainly due to the price.
@ThePsycholist
@ThePsycholist 2 года назад
You have some good points but I didn’t have any issues with wheels out of the box and have rode on some bone rattling trails with no problems. Yeah the brakes are on the bottom end of the spectrum but they haven’t kept me from doing anything. It is a very solid starting point and easily upgradable down the road. I've read a couple reviews of folks that needed a professional truing right out of the box, but mine were in great shape. Not top quality wheels mind you, but true and durable. Also, "not smooth compared to sram or shimano" is not a super helpful comparison when those brands make countless products at a bunch of different price points. In my rides, the adventx held up well to Tiagra/GRX 400, but for half the price. YMMV.

Hello! For all year round commuting I don’t think you could go wrong with a gravel bike. The geometry is more comfortable than say a road bike and you have plenty of mounting locations for racks and mudguards. Also, bigger tire clearance for more comfort. I would even recommend the Poseidon X as a commuter bike. You would have some money left over to buy the racks and guards you need and also swap out the stock tires with a street only tread. State bicycle Co has an all road model that would be a good commuter as well and comes in at $850

Pros: Price Groupset Carbon fork Thru axle capable with adapter Cons: Cheap Chinese cranks and bb Cheap rims (unable to go tubeless even with gorilla tape) :( Seat but this is a personal preference And the brakes! These are single pot floating calipers so don’t do what I did by going downhill unless you swap these out for at least an origin 8 hydraulic or at least the spyre. The advent X is a great budget groupset though if you have bikes with higher end components you will definitely feel the sponginess when riding for the first time. That’s the difference between high quality bearings vs cheap bushings.

Thanks for watching and commenting! I haven't rode down a long enough descent to have the brakes be an issue yet although I can see how the floating calipers wouldn't be the best option. What tires did you use on the mtb trail? I feel with a set of 650b tires, you could blaze anything a hardtail mtb can.

I ran with a set of Maxxis Ramblers, 700x45 front and 700x40 rear both at 30psi. In hindsight I should’ve gone 700x50 front and 700x45 rear as the tires do clear the frame. However, there isn’t much mud clearance at that spec so depending on your terrain it may not work depending on where you ride. I’m in southern CA where the trails are dry year round so it works in my favor.

I am surprised that 50c tires could fit! I love the wider tires having come from 24c road tires. I might have to give some 700x50 a try. I don't do much riding in muddy areas either so it would work

Another youtuber “locked in” tried 650bx2.1 and they fit so that is also something worth considering. Coincidentally enough, he lives in the next city to mine and judging from his videos we ride the same trails...small world

Yeah I have seen some of his vids. Actually one of the reasons I felt more confident to get the X was because of some of his videos. Yeah small world man! I might have to get a bunch of different tires and do a vid of what all fits one day

can someone convince me that paying $2225 for Trek Domane AL5 is a better choice than buying this bike :))

The biggest weak point on this bike is the fact it's quick release front and rear. That severely limits its upgrade potential. That is why I got a State All-Road. They make a 4130 Chromoly Steel and a 6061 aluminum version. The aluminum version is over 1k and has a carbon fork, the 4130 Chromoly is $899. Both bikes have 12mm Thru Axles front and rear. Buying a sub 1k bike with a carbon fork scares me a bit. The fork is a critical part of the bike that I would never want to have fail on me. So yeah, those are the reasons I chose not to get this bike. To say no other gravel bike can come close to this price, I disagree. The State 4130 All-Road at $899 comes with a SRAM compatible 11 speed, a much nicer state branded crankset that isn't square taper, 12mm Thru Axle front and rear, and the option to choose 700c or 650b wheels (both with full sealed cartridge bearing hubs).....or spend extra and get both. That is a much better deal for your money and due to its current specs it is infinitely upgradable with modern high end parts.
