When we were living in Fremont back in the 80s I experienced the 1989 earthquake. I was driving North on the 880 freeway towards Oakland and about 3 miles south of the cypress structure when it hit. It felt like I was driving on ice and had no control of my car. The radio went dead and all the birds flew out of the trees. I said oh this is a big one.

It was a precursor last time, leading into the 1989 Loma Prieta quake.
@SuzyEH
@SuzyEH Год назад
I lived in Oakland, a mile or two from the Cypress Structure, there wasn't a precursor earthquake as such. What they did detect were sharp signal changes in the weeks preceding the quake. The equipment that the researches were using was turned to pick up ultra-low-frequency electromagnetic waves. No one felt those changes in the magnetic waves. But do you remember the loud pop that was just milliseconds before all hell broke loose during Loma Prieta.
@asc_missions3080
@asc_missions3080 Год назад
@@SuzyEH I was in my 4th floor office on Castro Street, downtown Mountain View, about 3.5 miles from the primary epicenter. I say primary because there was a secondary rupture of a previously unknown South-North fault west of the Hayward fault, out in the Bay under the mud, which was what spread the Bay Bridge enough to let that roadbed panel pull off the pylons and drop. I hadn't heard about a pop until now, and don't know if that huge collapse might have been what you heard. Or not. In any even, I'm sure the entire bridge rang like a bell. My experience seemed like an intense psychic vibration that rattled my ears, teeth and joints as the atmospheric aspect of the P-wave flashed through just before things began to move. I had just enough time to call out "Earthquake" and as you say, "all hell broke loose" as I was telling my confused colleagues to take cover. One had felt it also bout didn't know what it was, and the other was astonished that I knew an earthquake (shaking) was coming before it arrived. Which explains why the first understood me instantly and was already dropping to get under the desk while the second was still sitting there trying to make sense of what I had said. Loma Prieta was not my first big Quake. That was the 1959 7.3 Hegben Lake (Yellowstone) earthquake with its half-dozen 5.9 yo 6.3 aftershocks over the next day or two, as enjoyed in Manhattan Montana about 65 miles north of epicenter. My brothers and I sat on the lawn and watched the waves roll at us along the sidewalk, tipping the concrete squares up and down, and whipping the trees back and forth. We all four felt them coming in the same way I described above, except that Brother #2's experience was intense and painful. He's one of those guys who can't walk through a retail security detector without a blast of pain through his head. Back to today and the point at hand. Wikipedia mentions two Loma Prieta foreshocks in the low to mid 5s in the 1988-89 months preceding the actual quake. In 1988 I experienced another 5.1, that I recall as the first before those two, at a red light on Calaveras Blvd. in Milpitas. It centered on the Calaveras fault very close to yesterday's 5.1 and 3.1 epicenters. It may not have been considered a Loma Prieta foreshock because it was not on the same (San Andreas) fault,which is why I called it a precursor. Over the pat few years it has become apparent that earthquake stresses "travel" akin to systemic ULF waves along and across plate boundaries and among interconnected faults. A release (EQ) in one place transfers stress downline and is followed by a later quake there. Amateur pattern-mapping projects and rudimentary prediction models are being developed and reported on RU-vid. I'm going to be very keen on watching the next 6-18 months unfold, to see if a similar progression occurs.

@SuzyEH
@SuzyEH Год назад
I live in Seattle. I talked to a guy with FEMA after the Cascadia Rising (I think that was the name) drill that bought all the agencies together for a drill. Having lived in Oakland for Loma Prieta, had to be the most terrifying moments of my life, I know how bad it's going to be. The FEMA guy told me it's pretty bleak if a 8 or better hits, airport gone, ports gone, all bridges gone. It's going to be hard getting aid to the area quickly. He said a lot of people might have to be on their own for 2 to 3 weeks before aid arrives. My stomach has it's own quake when I think about the event and it scares me for the Bay Area having lived there. Will the big one bring Millennium Tower to the ground?

Too many long years, on really bad roads... But, I found goodies, along the way. I'm just not good at telling... ... How average folks can restore the piece they need... Basically, easy. And, you're welcome to all my research about it. Textbook stuff. Mostly all quotes. (For what it's worth, long ago, EMI used my stuff, as a template, for starting their Grad Degree program, for professional training in those fields. (The guy who took it, realized, too late, he needed those copies from me, of mine, before he slammed the door, stating, he was writing his own book... And, he didn't need my stuff.". After, stating otherwise, at our last 30min call, when he speed-type all I was telling, about my stuff, and how it fit the EMI/ FEMA "Higher Education Project" goal, mission, and objective. Thusly, a waste of perfectly good OCD, in my case, and for my matching goal, mission, objective s. Thusly, old, broke, broken... ... Hoping...??? ... Still trying...!!!...??? I'm even too tired to edit these things, any more. Oh, too. Some Jesus guy wouldn't let me turn my back on this "civil defense issue", and how it's the key to empowering democracy.
