The old timers back in the day would just go to one of those little small town hardware stores and get some dynamite. Easily found in mining towns. Just remember to yell "fire in the hole" before blasting that stump into smithereens. Ahhh...the good old days. For some odd reason you just can't get dynamite at your local hardware store anymore.

There’s a much easier way. Drill a hole in the center as deep as you can. Then drill holes from the side to connect to the center hole. Use a “sparkler” and put it down the center hole. It will burn like a rocket stove from the center out, while pulling air from the bottom. It takes 15 minutes to prep, it’s gone in an hour or two

It's like a hobby, and a whole lot cheaper than buying a stump grinder. In some parts, one could never get the burn permit for the duration of this video, and for good reason. I just drill the holes and let nature do the rest. Whenever I mow, I bump the 60" mower deck into the rotting stump and remove the rotted exterior a little, whatever falls off is all good. Eventually, I'm running the mower right over the stump and it's done. It can take a few years, but I'm in no hurry.

I just sprinkle epsom salts in all those drill holes and let nature do it's thing. 2 huge stumps completely gone within a year. For under $10. No digging, no fire, no mess. Poked a hole in the centre, added some soil and a couple of new plants. My trees were over 9 metres tall.😊

Stump grinder. 1/2 day rental, Ace Hardware $45. And you'll have some nice mulch instead of the ash and charcoal mess.

I did basically the same without fire. Drilling the holes, but then putting all the wood chips back into the holes. This collected rain and moisture, resulting in the root rotting fast,. Within a year, the stubs were gone.

I’ve removed many of stumps by digging a hole around and underneath the stump and then burn it from underneath. Dig a hole next to the stump, cutting any larger roots, then use a garden hose to wash the soil from around the stump into the hole you dug. Then keep digging in the same hole until you expose all the roots. Build fire around and underneath. You need air circulation or it won’t burn.

I definitely prefer the potassium nitrate method, everybody always shits on it but that's because they don't do it right. The best way to do it is drill 20-30 evenly spaced 1/2" to 3/4" inch diameter x 8-12 inch deep holes into the face of the fully dried stump (which should be covered with a half sheet of plywood, leaving a gap with some spacers between the plywood and stump to allow air flow, for at least a year). Fill the holes to the brim with potassium nitrate/KNO3 prills, then pour boiling hot water into the holes to fully dissolve the KNO3 along with helping to dilate the wood pores to allow for slightly better absorbtion. Once it appears there is no liquid at the bottom of the holes after drying for a couple weeks, repeat the KNO3/hot water cycle again, and a week after the second pour, add in some more boiling hot water. This will make the KNO3 absorb into the wood itself. After fully drying (this is a process best started at the beginning of spring and burned at the end of summer/early fall) after a few more months, it's ready to burn. At which point you pour one final round of KNO3 into the dry holes without adding any water, instead pour in some kerosene or deisel then build a fire on top of and around the stump as shown here. At this point you've filled the majority of the stump with several pounds of potassium nitrate, which contains a huge quantity of oxygen, and will make the stump burn ten times faster than doing something like this. If you put enough KNO3 in and it absorbs in properly, it will slowly sizzle away before your very eyes, it's amazing actually. If you want to see how much power KNO3 has, take a stainless steel shot glass or serving cup (gripped in some pliers) and fill it half full of KNO3, then hold a propane torch under it until the KNO3 is liquid and red hot, then carefully pour the liquid on a piece of wood. It will eat the wood away in seconds and burn violently, digging a deep hole in the wood.

Another way to make this work faster is to get an old oil drum (44 or 50 gallon), cut the top and bottom out and place the drum over the top of the stump. Dig out air holes in the ground around the drum an light the stump up. The drum acts as a chimney and draws in the air like a furnace.

“Well it’s day 3787. I’m gonna go ahead and add some more vegetable oil and let it go again.”

If you use a nitrate fertiliser such as ammonium or potassium nitrate , instead of the oil. The stump will burn out without having to continually tend the fire. The nitrates are oxidisers and the burning stump will not rely on oxygen from the air to keep it burning underground.

you can do the same thing without all the wait by just digging a small hole on one side of the stump, put some charcoal in, and start it burning. It can take a day or 2 to burn completely.

We had a smaller tree back in the '50s that died. We cut it closer to the ground and my dad just dumped his BBQ coals on it when ever he BBQd (often). We moved maybe a year later and you could still smell the roots burning.

He did it. He had to cut 2 trees to use as firewood to get rid of that stump. And then he realized, now he had to cut 4 more trees to get rid of the 2 new tree stumps. So he gave up and just planted flowering plants around the 2 new stumps to hide them.

I have never understood going beyond lighting a fire on top of the stump. May take a bit longer, but it saves so much effort.

If you had drilled a hole in the stump at the base of the and through to the bottom and pour your favorite(EPA approved) burning solution, then light it. Takes just a few hours.

Idk. Looks like 2 gallons of veg oil, big bag of charcoal, and enough firewood to heat my house for days was used for the "easiest" stump removal. Allrighty then. Fun experiment, but not the easiest or cheapest. Thanks for posting!

So why couldn't we drill 4 holes vertical connecting them with horizontal holes creating 4 rocket stoves and repeat the process if it goes out

....and you have to use good clean cooking oil. Not playing with a full pack!

Interesting video. When you said it's not the fastest way, you weren't kidding!😄 Personally, I would hire someone with a stump grinder and be done in a matter of minutes, as opposed to weeks. But hey, that's just me...😉😁

My suggestion is to make that stump your new "burn pile" for a few seasons.

Liked the video but that's quite a long time to wait. If I wanted to remove it quickly, I'd just chop pieces off the sides, just like I do with three foot pieces of cord wood. That would reduce the volume above ground very quickly, on a stump this size, likely less than 30 minutes. Then just burn what was left. If your stump is still wet then you might have to add some oil to get it started and allow it to burn through. I find the easiest way is to just leave the stump, maybe split some holes in it, and come back in 20 years. What ever is left has been weakened so badly by insects, mold, fungus and overall decay that you can just rip it apart. :-)

You have to hold the heat in. Beat I have found is use some metal flashing to surround your stump, and a Weber Kettle lid on top.

A cord of firewood 20 gallons of oil ,5 bags of charcoal

I did this about 4-5 years ago. 4ft williow stump. Used diesel instead of the vegetable oil. Burned for 5 days, 99% complete. Left 3ft deep hole the diameter of the stump plus the stump veins that went out around about 6ft. 10/10 recommend. Only started the charcoal and nothing else.

I first learned this from my then 76 year old grandfather when I was 10. He loaded the stump with kerosen. lit it and came back a weekk later. The stump was pretty much gone

In the 90's cleaning up my yard, I used this method on several tree stumps. A stump grinder works well on lightweight trees and I feel this is easiest or an excavator. With the fir tree which was about a 2.5 ft dia stump, the roots were large. Digging around with and az and doing this campfire trick, eventually the stump was gone. Really it was the fire pit for the spring! digging out a fir stump can be costly so to burn flush may work for you. I did drill holes, and chainsawed into the fir. It took a long time no matter what i did. So, it was cheaper for me to excavate or chip smaller trees, Campfire stump burns take time and cost more with beer, smores, and family time. The family campfire was nice and we all chatted about how the stump was doing.

I watch mostly Historical or Science related docu's but I also watch homesteading stuff sometimes and so "They" will put up these little Gems from time to time, all he's doing is burning a stump but I enjoy these kinds ever so often just for enjoyment reasons, get away from the Apocalyptic Poisoned Media for a while.

The roots may smolder for ages then flare up and burn the neighborhood down!

Match lite does not leave an aftertaste if you let it burn for about half an hour or so as you are supposed to do,let flames die all the way down before cooking. Most people add the meat WAY too soon. When using the product..

Always Grind it away. Cheapest ... Fastest ... most complete ... 100% removal. Nothing else comes close.

In my country we light it up, put soil over it and let it burn until it becomes charcoal. But you could also get a stump grinder if you don't want charcoal.

I put kerosene in my stump and filled the holes over a few months so that it was really soaked. It never burned completely but what's left now is like a railroad tie and it probably won't ever rot because it's been preserved with the kerosene .
