I think that is exactly what's wrong with my truck because I pulled up to get gas turned my truck off then I turned it back on after getting gas, and the power steering was gone. I will check and see if this will solve the problem, Thank you.
Time to grab your 13 mm socket and go check it especially if your wife drives w your new baby.As you know these trucks are a bear to steer without power assist.
This is very enlightening. I will do you one better though. My truck had a small oil leak and caught on fire right there. Ford couldn't figure out what caused it. Put it on my insurance company. My whole family was in the car. I bet the wire was shorting them the oil caught on fire. A year before they had actually changed the eps. It was under warranty, they were the last ones that touched that area, and they still didn't own up to it.
My 2015 5.0L F150 has an intermittent issue of stalling at idle. Dealer changed throttle body, purge valve, and battery. Then wanted to change the power steering system due to communication faults between power steering control module and main computer. Or possibly drawing too much current. I better take a look at those wires before they touch it again.
Got "Powersteering assist fault" yesterday when starting to back up from parking spot. Turned off and turned back on and message went away and had power steering back. Scary thinking if this had happened on the freeway. 2013 F-150. Will check this out. Thanks for the tip.
That is scarey, if you are a smaller person with say a weak shoulder or without alot or upper body strength you may have trouble steering the truck to a safe place off the road especially when you don’t know it’s coming .There’s no doubt that if I didn’t pull that plate it would have rubbed to ground on the aluminum skid plate . Truck only has like 20k miles on it and it was more than half worn thru the insulation. I traded that in on a 2020 I haven’t checked it yet it’s only got 10k on it now.
truckguyjoe Thanks Joe. As you know down the road that would have been a problem for sure. Without the assist it’s a bear to steer these trucks, you gotta be Popeye! When the auto start feature kicks in it kills your power steering , so I’ve had a few chances to turn it without the assist, for some reason it’s as hard to steer as my bib block, Duramax and Cummins we’re without assist.
Hey John, Good catch. This is just one of the reasons I usually do my own maintenance. Also good information on some of the problems a chewed through ground wire could cause. Stay well, Joe Z
Running to get underneath my truck right now! Every now and then I feel like a briefly lose power steering for like half a second. I wonder if that could be it.
I’m hoping like hell this is what is wrong with my ‘11. It lost power this morning. It was a true pain the in ass to maneuver around all day. I’m tearing into it tonight. Lowest I can find a used unit is 400$ with a good bit of miles on it. Buddy works at ford can get me a new one for 922$ out the door. I understand the electric motor works great but Jesus I’ve spent less than half that for vehicles before that were good vehicles lol. Thanks for the info!
