Post Driver Review - Things to think about before buying a simple tool

A post driver is a very simple tool but like any tool for the job there are good and bad. From bore size, to weight, to handle design and even noise dampening, there are lots of factors to consider when shelling out a couple of hundred bucks on a post driver. After all, you are unlikely to ever get another one!

Hi Tim Yes they are dangerous! A work colleague cut his thumb off when holding onto the top of drivers ears . Over extended on the lift came off the post and on the down stroke the post ran up the side of the driver severing his thumb. Since then I always use the longer drivers. Thanks Tim great video as always!

I'm in the old country and just came across this. Boy, that was entertaining. Great delivery and style. Learned stuff too. If I ever need to buy a post driver, this told me all I need to know. Cheers.

Recently we purchased a Sneddon’s post lifter. It’s a great tool and we are really happy to buy a quality Australian tool. We already have a post knocker but if we didn’t I’d get the Sneddons. Their shop is really cool too.

I incorporated a feature on mine - i put a weight on the bottom. This acted like pendulum to keep the driver facing down. Drivers with the weight at the top want fall backwards behind you. The weight I used was an old D6 track adjuster. You could do the same with a short piece very heavy walled pipe. Approx 5 to 6 inch of hollow bar might work. I agree that short drivers are a danger, and should be banned, mine is 1200. Very satisfying when it hits the ground.

Good video Tim. I refuse to have short drivers on my place. I have lifted them and caught them on the top of the post and smacked the top of my head. I've only done it twice but that was enough.

Thanks Tim, brilliant demo, I have one of the post driver combo's and I love it as it allows me to remove posts as well as roll logs with the cant hock that it has, cheers

A pair of primary schoolers helps to avoid measuring. I get one of them to put a tie wire into the right hole, and the other to take it out once I've knocked it down.

7:52 Tim, that exact situation happened to me last week. The only reason you didn't hit yourself in the head was because you were expecting to over reach. What happened with me, is that I was looking down at the base of the post and over reached. On the downstroke the bottom of the striker caught the top of the post and with full force I hit myself in the head with the striker. I saw stars for a couple of seconds and my neck was really sore. My head movement was greatly reduced for a couple of days but didn't do any permanent damage. I'm fully recovered luckily. Now, before I bring the striker down, I check that the bottom is clear. Cheers

Awesome as always Tim. I bought the 1200mm Sneddon’s and was really happy with what you said about the shorter model. Well designed and made and I’m so glad I have one

Great review Tim! I'm currently working my way through all your fencing vids. I actually bought the Sneddons post driver before finding this, very happy with your review :-) Psyching myself up to continue fencing our unfenced property. Honestly, fencing is my favorite job so far!

Great stuff Tim. Like the 1200mm rammer to help with height guidance. Will note though that if contracting, petrol power or pneumatic are great!

The dampened Sneddons post driver still seems to make just as much noise as the blue ones.

You know he is hard core when he doesn't mention how hard it is to repeatedly lift a 20kg post driver. There's a video of Jeremy Clarkson 'trying' to use a post driver on his farm with his farm hand Caleb. Caleb shows him how displaying no effort, and Jeremy takes hold of it and can barely lift it!

Hi Tim, I have wooden posts 50 x50 square 1.2 high and am looking at a 57mm square internal post driver, Will this be adequate or should I go for a larger bore size and round vs square Thanks, Gary

G'day Gary. 50X50 posts seem a bit thin to work well....

Great videos Tim. If I was to use both standard and XL star pickets, can the XL sized post driver also work with standard star pickets or is there too much movement/slope inside the post driver? The Sneddons looks the goods.
@FarmLearningTim
@FarmLearningTim Год назад
Long story short, the XL driver will work with standards but you will have less control.

Anyone that is employed to do this job is not going to use one of these. I am so sorry I and any of my employees would never use any of these. I have installed 100s of miles of wood and steel fence all with machines. These are geared for the consumer rather than the people in the industry of building ag fence. If you need this type of fence and do not own a tractor with a loader, check with you neighbors. I am sure you can work a deal out with them. I will give you one of my trade secrets for installing at the correct height. Find a light weight tube a bit larger than your steel post and cut to height of fence. Then slip it over the post and use loader to push in to the ground just a bit above the tube. Tim, the h brace you have there by the truck which way did the fence go?

How would that noise dampener in the Sneddens hold up over the years? Would you be able to get a replacement nylon plug or is it a case of either going back to full on noise or tossing it over the shoulder once the nylon plug breaks apart ?
@FarmLearningTim
@FarmLearningTim 3 года назад
Probably the latter I reckon
@tasmaniandevil7610

Forget the nylon insert Pay a machine shop to insert a aluminum plug without the handles on a 27/8 pipe It will get that fence installed without breaking your wrist I know I'm a fence builder
