Post Stroke Fatigue How Long Does It Last??

Fatigue is a disabling and persistent symptom affecting many stroke survivors and is a predictor for death after stroke onset. Post-stroke fatigue is a multidimensional motor-perceptive, emotional and cognitive experience that has become of interest for stroke researchers only in the recent past.
Post-stroke fatigue is described as ‘a feeling of early exhaustion with weariness, lack of energy and aversion to effort that develops during physical or mental activity and is usually not ameliorated by rest'
Post-stroke fatigue (PSF) often occurs after stroke and has a negative impact on the rehabilitation process. Several studies focused either on short- or on long-term PSF and their relations with stroke characteristics. However, possible pre-stroke risk factors such as history of depression, pre-existent white matter lesions or brain atrophy were usually not taken into account. Therefore, the precise mechanisms underlying PSF remain still unclear.
So regardless of the medical or scientific terms. For those of us that have Post Stroke Fatigue. We know it just sucks.
Sadly the experts do not agree as to the lenght, duration and/or impact of Post Stroke Fatigue.

The best thing you can do when you experience the fatigue is DON’T FIGHT IT!!! Your brain is trying to repair itself and it is trying to tell you that you need to just rest and be. It will pass but it will take time depending on how severe your stroke was. NO!!!! YOU ARE NOT SCREWED. You may think so, but it will improve with time. In a week’s time you have have roller coaster days of tiredness and fatigue, but don’t fight with your body. It’s a slow process but you will get better. DON’T FIGHT WITH YOUR BRAIN. ❤

Great You Tube … Excellent information… I suffer from PSF but fortunately it doesn’t last and sometimes it lasts for just a few hours … I find by just doing chores helps but my energy soon runs out sooner than it used to. I’m back to driving my car after passing a class 5 driving test.

I have post joke fatigue from having my stroke over two years ago. Some days I’m just so exhausted I get my regular eight errors of sleep but then when it wake up I’m tired again and I’ll have another nap if you can call at that for another five or six hours, even then when I wake up from that nap I’m so tired. Grocery shopping is very difficult now. I go with my husband and manage to walk around for 15 to 20 minutes before I’m done. I often end up slumped over top of the grocery cart. I can’t imagine what people are thinking as they walk past me and wonder what’s wrong with that woman. I am also blind, but not due to the stroke so everything is a lot more difficult now. It’s a good day if I can make it to the kitchen and make myself a cuppa tea. So many things that I could do pre-stroke that I can’t do now post stroke, such as Cooking make dinner or even wash dishes. I can’t stand up for more than 10 minutes at a time so washing dishes is very difficult. I can manage to wash maybe two plates and then I’m done for the day. Now I think I’m suffering from stroke depression, too, so my life really sucks now!

Take care and rest when you need it, hopefully in time you will need it less. I am two years post stroke still struggling I lost my hearing following the stroke suffering from hearing fatigue. That’s when what tiny amount of hearing you do have, your brain is trying to understand the words that are spoken and struggles to make sense of them even with hearing aids. All we can do is to take care of ourselves as much as possible, take care and be kind to yourself.

I think, as you so eloquently put it.. I'm screwed! LOL I suffered from depression long before I had the stroke. Indeed I've had depression for nigh on 20 years. Now I think I have P.S.F. on top of that. Of course it could also have a lot to do with the Sleep Apnoea I've just been diagnosed with! Whatever it is, I feel like shit! LOL

Hi, I had a stroke about 2.5 years ago. I suffer terribly from PSF. I began to micro dose on amphetamine, is this dangerous? And is there any knowledge out there that gives a rough idea how long psf can last for? My psf hit me about a year after my stroke. Any advice is welcome. Thanks 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This is the year 2022 it will be 2023 in three days Do you have any new information In regards to somebody who has suffered a stroke now for over a year, the fatigue began three months after the stroke around March and it’s still ongoing, I’m gonna start taking Co Q 10 I started omega-3 and B complex about two months ago. Do you have any other suggestions that might help me to overcome this fatigue that is not repaired by sleep, and ironically sleep is sporadic due to the fact that I feel like I have to urinate every three hours, L O L I am supposed to have a sleep study done to see if there’s a sleep apnea I live alone so I don’t know if I snore I have to ask my dog lol Some days it feels like it’s gonna be a perfect day and then it just crashes down around my ears and I’m screwed for the whole day, but I’m not sleepy I just don’t seem to be able to hold my neck or shoulders in place. Feels like a magnetic force is pulling me down to the ground.

There's probably a better way to put this, but, I had a fairly mild stroke about 3 months ago and - well - I am having major trouble shitting. I had never had a problem with constipation and the docs say these cannot be related. But I've never had an issue like this, for any length of time. Got a colonoscopy about 2 weeks ago and had two, benign, small polyps. Is non-pooping something anyone else has experienced? Don't know what else could be the cause - and I don't have a gall bladder and have only had the reverse problem, now and then, for the last 30 years.

Hi, I have my stroke over two years ago and I’m having trouble with constipation too. The pharmacist suggested duck deluxe and I take that now and then. Sometimes dux does help but I’ve noticed one pill doesn’t always do the job so sometimes I take two pills which does help. Try and add more fibre to your diet, oatmeal is good. Or ask your doctor if it’s OK for you to take Metamucil it’s high fibre and I think you just mix it with water and drink it. I myself never tried it because I have additional health issues.
