Christlieb Siegmund Binder: Two Preludes (from 72 Preludes)
As a slight change of pace, here are two delightful short pieces by a little-known German composer, Christlieb Siegmund Binder (1723-1789), who flourished in the rich musical scene in the city of Dresden. Among Binder’s compositions (published mostly after his death), were six sets of twelve preludes (each) for organ or harpsichord.
The two pieces offered today are from the second of the six sets. The first of these, labeled “mit Flöten Registern” (“with flute stops”), I have played on a 4’ flute stop (sounding an octave higher than the notated pitch), allowing this piece to sing much in the style of some very famous little pieces for musical clock by the great Franz Josef Haydn. The second prelude is a straightforward fugue, which is both lyric and declamatory.
These pieces are in the public domain.
