When I did postcrossing I would write the ID in a couple different places just in case it got damaged on the card somehow from the postal service.

Its polite to register all postcards you have arrive as fast as possible when you receive them. It helps boost stats

You get official postcrossing addresses from the site when you click send a card. If you are looking for people to direct swap with you can try going on the forum and joining groups or you can search under specific countries to message people directly who have their preferences set for direct swap

Sometimes there are Creepers in any hobby. On a nice side. There was a Russian girl in her early teens who on occasion sent me stamps and brief correspondence. I would send her stamps and a short note. I told her in the note to let her parents know. p-crossing had and has + things. i got ground coffee from a German lady because i drink coffee in the morning. I traded with a woman postcards of Pittsburgh for her Flatiron Bldg. cards. You can always type your message and glue it to a card. Many do that as well

The easiest way to improve your handwriting is diary. Just write it every day trying to make it readable. After a few weeks you will write better. Practice is the key. P.S. Some recommend to use a fountain pen, but it is the whole world itself and could become a separate hobby.

Americans usually hold the pen in a crazy way BTW. So you'd better check your grip first.
