Well may be you can try to have some publications and may be some experience in good research institutes in the form of short research stay or internships.
Postdoc is a job here, so you get a job contract and certain the duration varies with the funding they have for the contract so that they can pay you a monthly salary. It can be as low as 1 year and can go as high as 3-5 years also. So, every postdoc has different duration!
