Postural Restoration Tests: Top 5 Reasons You Can't Get Neutral

Establishing neutrality in PRI tests is the first step of any PRI process. Passing the tests tells you whether your extensor muscles; the hip flexors, back extensors, and neck flexors, have been turned "off". They also tell you whether you are able to use your diaphragms for proper respiratory mechanics.
If these things aren't occurring you really won't progress. The reason is simple. If you can't pass the tests it means you don't have the ability to use the appropriate muscles due to the position of your body.
The Left AIC, Right BC, and Right TMCC, and bi-lateral PEC patterns are indicating that your body is positioned in such a way that you can't move and breathe without compensation.
Thus you won't be able to utilize your hamstrings, glutes, abdominals, and low traps effectively. Your pelvis and scapulas will not be moved and stabilized with the appropriate muscles. Your breathing will be compromised.

I am very patterned with bad scoliosis. But since I started watching your channel and implementing your knowledge into my 'training' I can see improvement in my posture and body. The pain still 'travels' but has diminished. And yes, I do agree with you 100%. You need a professional like yourself to be getting neutral. But what if you haven't got someone like you around?:) I consider your channel as the best one to explain PRI and its principles. You dig deep Neal. I have watched quite a few seminars and other channels explaining PRI. You are still second to none and I always look forward to watching another upload. Great stuff.

Wow, tthankfully (I think) I found you days ago. You are opening a whole new world of possibilites of what I tried to explain to doctors and they looked at me like I'm nuts. First, I'm very hypermobile turned stiff (probably EDS'er) who started having postural difficulty after being rear ended by a 60's truck (heavy metal/bull bumper) at a dead stop at about 45mph without them braking, uggghh. I started not being able to do (yoga stretching/movements) what I'd done my whole life. I would sublax and pop back into place but this was different. It might not be from the accident but it accelerated my road to non-neutrality. A year earlier I had 2 lumbar compression fractures (kyphoplasty) getting up off my bed (possible POTS). Its been 10 years of HELL trial and error and spend most days researching and trying to get self realigned. This video hits home that all I have tried has not worked. I just want to get back outside and walk , a very basic primal function, as I was at one time a power walker for mobility (losing 191 pounds) and I miss my body/mind/ground connection. I've switched out food, drink, stretches, injections, PT, medication and more. They all gave up and have left me for dead. I haven't seen a doctor in 4 years but have multiple issues that relate to this misalignment. Its affecting EVERY single daily function including sleep as vagas nerve stays in fight/flight or freeze. I need more help but I will never give up on myself and my dedication to solving this seemingly impossibility. I'm in N. California. Thank you for sharing

"Natural" in regards to what? Seattle has lots of good PRI therapists, by the way.
@intheflesh
@intheflesh 2 года назад
@@NealHallinan Well my channel is predominantly about nutrition and I'm always fighting a battle over the use of the word "natural." Most people just reflexively and unthinkingly use the word to justify a pre-existing idea. So "veganism" or "paleo" become "natural" in our modern context even though nothing is "natural" in this context and there's really no such thing. You very eloquently made a similar point when you described the shoe support as "more natural" than the modern floor. I often Pontius Pilate it as, "What is natural?" with the implication being that it is an incoherent concept in its usual use by the usual person and the entire concept falls apart upon even the slightest bit of scrutiny. I've been ready for this (healing and walking right) for a decade. Everything is snapping into place fast for me. I have tried everything else and tried to understand this so long that I know my body very well (proprioceptively). All I needed was a little nudge and for you to explain the internal diaphragm asymmetry and I was off and running searching for the right arch and the left heel. I'm gonna let it ride for a few months and then make the trip to Seattle. I am also going to start going to classes. This ties together so much for me. I can tell it's going to be really important for me going forward. This has been an insane ten years and this is almost like arriving at a holy site for me. I really can't express how much this stuff means to me. It's almost a bit woo-woo and mystical for me and it sounds like it is a little that way for you too. I really appreciate the work you've put in to these videos and the philosophy you've tied in. I felt air in my upper right chest today and my eyes filled with tears and it dawned on me that I'm literally breath.
@intheflesh

@@NealHallinan Update: I'm able to get FULLY out of the pattern if I focus just a tiny bit when I walk. Five years of struggle and I only made small amounts of progress. I focused on a couple "exercises" that you showed me starting about 3 weeks ago, and I'm already 90% of the way to a posture and gait that I can live and thrive with. This is incredible. Thank you so much!d I look forward to seeing you at a PRI event some day in the future.

Update to the update: Whatever was happening before was probably me just approaching neutral. I can't be certain because I couldn't make it out to Seattle to see an actual PRI practitioner. I realized a few months I was actually a patho and had right rib flare that I needed to address. It's been almost six full months and I'm still not quite done but I'm close. Don't give up. This is the answer. It just takes time if you are deep in the pattern.

I found your channel 2 days ago, and have tears in my eyes right now. I had been searching for a "grand narrative" for many things bothering me for 8(!) years and this includes it all. I cant believe how much you figured out about the AIC! It ties all my bodily instincts for neutrality (been sensing my left heel, my weak left diaphragma, tilted pelvis and much more) coherently together. I am starting to absorb all your knowledge now, thinking about a way to measure my future progress. Establishing a baseline will help, any ideas which tests are suited best? (Maybe you already covered this in a video, there is so much more to learn.) The diagnosis is right this time, i know it! Lets see how fixing it will work. God bless you Neal! Has anyone tried the PRI orthotics with zero drop shoes like the Altra shoes? I understand why minimalist, thin and flexible shoes are not appropriate for people who have overpronation and cannot sense the ground properly. But I still think that zero drop shoes are better than shoes with a heel lift (e.g. Asics, Mizuno etc)

Also..you mentioned that it took you 4+ years to fully understand..um..can I trust providers listed on the pri official website? or is it possible that even those providers do not fully understand? Hi Neal, You mention vision can make someone not feel the right muscles such as hams. What if they already regained massive amounts of ROM through PT in the hips, ribcage, etc, but are having trouble with a few last steps (in my case we cannot find anything for toe touch limitation nor shoulder IR, and still a stubborn 30-ish degrees of left hip IR ROM, so far). Do you think that can still be vision at this point? Your perspective could be important to me! Thank you

You know just thinking after watching so many different videos, I bet you could force pattern correction and eventually force the shift. The benefit being, idk just a thought, that it would help keep the shift. I do find I get relief but just as much lose it and if there was a method to force it then it might be easier to maintain etc... I am naturally drawn to PRI as it is a true understanding and appreciation for how the body works and I do think it is the best way. So time goes on and keep practicing and keep trying but then I get these videos from squat university channel and the dude seems to be able to fix e everyones stuff with direct targeted exercises. Some of these exercises for example stop hip shift in the barbell squat. I feel like you don't work with athletes as much, idk, but it is interesting that both approaches work. PRI is like Fortnite or BJJ there is a learning curve but it is the ultimate Jedi skill no doubt. I just remembered you are a meditator too, PRI is a great mindfulness movement practice that I kind over lay on my existence now haha.

Hi Neal, I have a question about the muscles that need to be activated to get into left stance: are the arm muscles used at all? I (think I) know that the left adductor and right glute medius are needed to internally rotate the left leg and externally rotate the right leg, and I also remember you saying that more left arm internal rotation and right arm external rotation are needed, but do we need to activate certain muscles to facilitate that arm rotation (e.g. left bicep and right tricep)? I ask because I don't think I've seen any postural restoration techniques that emphasize arm muscles. I was wondering if maybe arm rotation happens automatically when the other muscles (left adductor/hamstring/obliques/transverse abs and right glute medius) are activated. I was also wondering if the left adductor and right glute med are used for both frontal and transverse plane movement (frontal because they help move us to the left, and transverse because they help rotate the legs). I took the time to learn what the three different planes of motion are (I know you've mentioned them in past videos and I sort of understood them, but I had a pretty hazy understanding) and that really helped me better understand the position we're trying to get into with postural restoration exercises. But I still have questions!
@jeanfalconer149

Forget that first question - I just rewatched your "Futility of the Scapular Y Exercise for Shoulder Health" video, where you mention that the right lower trap and tricep are needed for right trunk rotation.

What if i have extracted 4 premolars to correct a maloclusion and finished the orthodontic treatment with braces and my bite is okay now? The only problem is that the orthodontic treatment pulled my maxilla to the left side and now i'm assymetric because of that. Can PRI make it go back to a neutral position where it was before treatment? Ps: I took off braces 4 years ago when my bite was correct and the gaps between the extracted premolar were closed, but the problem is that the treatment left me SUPER assymetrical, it pulled my maxilla to the left side and with that even my nose is a little bit crooked in his midline to the same side the maxilla went. A fun fact is that I took off braces and never used that appliance that they ask you to use to no go back to its original place, but the bite just stayed perfectly closed. And my right eye is higher than my left as well, since my childhood, alongside with TMJ disfunction that started when I was 14, now I'm 25, actually all this started because of TMJ problems. I really wat to fix this, but I'm from brazil and it seems that there's no PRI especialists here.

Hi Neal, something that is really confusing me is foot orientation. If the left side femur is overly internally rotated and the right femur overly externally rotated. Why would we see a supinated right foot and pronated left? Thanks
@NealHallinan
@NealHallinan 2 года назад
It’s the other way around. Generally the left femur is ERd and the right femur is IRd on a pelvis that is oriented to the right with more weight on the right leg. Right tibia then ERs, hence the right foot supination. That’s what you see most of the time in a normal left AIC pattern.

There’s never “too far gone” imo- caveat being I’m not a doctor but I’m chronically ill and have hyper mobile joints I only learned I had after 30 years of completely destroying them. Some damage is permanent and the most balanced and pain free way I can hold my body would be considered “wrong” posture to someone else. I have a lot of disabled and elderly friends too and it’s really driven home that even if things progress so far you’ll never be able to reach the “ideal correct posture” or be pain free, trusting your body and learning how to compensate without hurting yourself, learning your limits and getting creative about working within them, can still get you to a good baseline. Some symptoms never go away but every little bit of relief adds up yaknow? I don’t know you or this therapy technique so maybe you can reach this point. It’s worth trying. But - and pardon my overly wordy and kinda sentimental comment here but this has been my life for the past few years so o think about it a lot and know so many people who despair because they think they’re too far gone. The stigma against mobility aids doesn’t help- Its incredible how much something as simple as a cane can help balance. Even if your body can’t reach and maintain this neutral posture, as long as you’re patient with yourself and willing to experiment and customize and listen to your body, i have hope you’ll be able to find your new neutral. I hope you find relief soon- I’m in the same boat so solidarity high five

Thanks Neil, getting neutral is fairly straight forward but staying neutral is a completely difficult endevour. Which way is the jaw usually rotated in the case of the LAIC/RBC/RTTMCC pattern, I think If I remember correctly its rotated right (due to the head rotating left) and so you get more occlusion on the right?
@NealHallinan

The jaw usually deviates left. If it deviates to the right it could indicate a torsion (which is considered a non-normal "pathological" issue)

This channel is giving me new language I definitely have been looking for. I also wish I could stop over compensating the left Side I would carry my tool bag. Gonna give the insoles a try. I've been dealing with improper patterns of every description for years. I grew up on a sofa playing games on my laptop for hours a day, have the worst overbite you can get, visual snow, dislocated my shoulder twice, belly breathe, had a sublixated atlas for an unknown amount of time, I basically lived the last 5 years in constant burning, stinging 8/10 pain with no diagnosis that actually helped me. With constant training and strengthening and self-release, I can get myself to 80% of where I used to be before I started working, but my patterns are still all wrong from head to toe and it hurts everywhere, it just takes turns hurting now instead. I can sometimes get a week where I'm pain free and strong everywhere, but it never lasts. The arches of my foot were something I'd never ever considered and noticed a change in the way my walking felt immediately when I put something there to stimulate them. Hopefully when I get the insoles, that'll give me long relief. If not, then a trip to the optometrist may be in order. Finding a specialist who actually understands the big picture is surprisingly difficult, I've been given so much misinformation and treatments for symptoms by professionals I've visited that I've lost hope in getting better multiple times.

No offense taken, I’ve got a weird body and patchy medical care and have to cobble together my maintenance routine on my own. People like yku make it possible. I know enough about my body’s quirks to know how much more I have to learn. I have no gd idea what I’m doing. But I’m good at customizing techniques to fit my needs and finding people who DO know what they’re doing so I don’t go in blind and hurt myself doing something dumb Sadly I can’t safely access in person physical therapy, let alone one competent with hypermobile patients and autistic people with trauma that makes physical touch fraught. (How many times do I have to tell them to warn me before they touch my butt telling me to activate my glutes???) Everyone’s different and RU-vid’s full of snake oil and people who are on the right track but teaching a one size fits all approach or just not as skilled at teaching as they are at doing. So I cast a wide net and keep finding gold mines like this to help me understand how to get my body to work in concert with itself instead of in an internal tug of war like it has been ever since a bad PT ingrained rigid posture habits in me and drilled on isolating muscles instead of movement patterns I’m not getting any professional assessment because there’s only so much that a PT can do over zoom but I that inability to achieve neutral posture, the image on the right in the thumbnail? Im sure you could point out the specifics of what’s going wrong where but that is absolutely the posture I’ve been stuck in for months. Eager to give some of these a try, even if it takes a long time to do it right or find a way that works for me even if it’s not quite how you’d teach it if I could see you in person.
