You’re absolutely right. With the current more mild variants, for most fit and healthy (and vaccinated!) folk the chances of serious illness appear to be very small. But for those of us with complex conditions - and I would think covid is the last thing you want with COPD - the risk is unknown but potentially rather high. Until I get covid I don’t have a clue how or if I would get through it. As well as the heart problem I have an immune/respiratory condition. Covid hits both. The general public doesn’t seem to understand or care about vulnerable folk and wearing masks is apparently too much to ask to keep people safe. I almost understand it - after nearly 2.5 years it is getting exceedingly tedious and everyone wants to get back to normal. Unfortunately for us, normal seems far away. Covid is still here, even if vaccines and treatments have made it less critical for most people. Glad to hear you’re being careful, though. We keep wearing masks when we are forced to go anywhere, even if we get some funny looks from time to time. Very few things are worth the risk. Take care 👍🙂

You are right - there are others that sit in the second early / early main crop category. It is not just about tuber maturity but also haulm longevity, that is, how long the plants keep growing after flower initiation. Varieties like international kidney bulk up early enough to be considered a second early but also keep going long enough to make it as a main crop, when they can produce some surprisingly large tubers. For home gardeners growing in large pots it can make a difference when deciding whether to plant tubers just in the bottom (typical for main crops) or in layers (typical for earlies).

Just what’s in the pot - recycled compost, horse compost, and fish, blood and bone.

Varieties vary in their propensity to flower. Some rarely or never flower, others practically always, and everywhere in between. Charlotte is an occasional flowerer. I imagine that levels of nitrogen (or nitrogen/potassium balance) could affect flowering.
