I love how Beckett totally swapped the narrative on Jack's little, 'the compass won't work because it says you want me dead' line. Beckett just straight up went, 'well if you're dead then we don't have a problem'.
This scene is brilliantly written. At first, Jack pretends to be a fool, randomly 'searching the room for Jones' heart' so that he can get Beckett to tell its location. Jack then asks what he would tell Beckett if he were to accept his deal, finding out how much Beckett knows about the Brethern Court. Jack never intended on actually doing business with Beckett, but he knew the pirates could only survive if they were to fight united instead of being hunted down one by one. Jack's plan was to have everyone fight and then stab Jones' heart during the battle, freeing the Dutchman from Beckett's control and turning the tables on him. Jack also 'negotiates regarding his crew members' simply to buy time, hoping Barbossa and the others would team up and attack so they could escape Beckett for the time being.

I seriously never interpreted Captain Jack's fumbling at the canisters as him trying to make Beckett reveal information he did not yet possess, the same goes for his questioning and eventual negotiation about why he should be alive. Uniting the pirates is ''obvious'' (you can think of it as Cpt. Jack merely trying to selfishly buy time), but your reading makes Captain Sparrow's actions a lot more altruistic and calibrated towards the survival of not merely him (because I think a lot of the movies is about mortality and wishing to live forever; death and (im)mortality are a theme in all of the movies) Maybe Captain Jack never thought of it in this elaborate way, but that's part of his genius; as that guy whose name I can't remember says: ''Do you think he plans it all out, or just makes it up as he goes along?'' Your reading puts so much more depth to it, and I thank you for it:D ''that's got to be the best pirate I've ever seen'' - same guy who I can't be bothered to look up the name of, but credits to all the actors, on screen and off, for this amazing story, and credits to you for the amazing interpretation of a scene that is already analyzed time and time by lovers of the series. It's a shame it was cut to this 3 minute version, rather than the original 4-5 minutes, but thankfully we got to see the cut footage (I'm assuming you've seen it... Jack had been so flippant & calm about everything since he’d been in the office. And by the look on Beckett’s face when Jack said, “What interest is she to you” he knew that he had hit Jack’s weak spot. I love the way Jack completely changes his demeanor in that moment. Speaks volumes about his feelings for Elizabeth.

Would only make sense if viewers also read the books. But I do agree, if they managed to keep it in the movie and able to suggest there is a book about that, it would only attract more buyers of the book.
THIS is how you make a film that keeps your audience guessing. Without everyone double crossing one another, this movie wouldn't have been half as interesting. I'd want Jack to represent me in a business deal... until I realize he's just as likely to cut his own deal to reap the greater reward.
Disney needs to make more of these movies, instead of their glorified fairy tales (obviously not every new disney film is). I guess I feel I outgrew Disney for the most part and it's a shame because of the potential shown here.

1:49 is actually really interesting. Jack says Beckett can take "his [chubby guy named Pintel?] friend with the wooden eye..." But Jack is a pirate Lord so he knows that the wooden eye is one of the 9 pieces of 8. If cutler gets a hold of that, even if he doesn't know what it is, then the court loses the ability to free Calypso ever again.
Yes, because Jack didn't actually want to free Calypso, he argued against it in the Brethren Court meeting But then again, he probably didn't want to just sell his allies outright, he was more likely just buying time to get hold on Jone's heart. Either of those works to his favor.
I miss this Jack. Witty, scheming, and eccentric, yet is always three steps ahead of everyone else, and you keep wondering where his true loyalties lie. I enjoyed the last two movies, but I feel like they dwindled him down to nothing but a comic relief protagonist.
Honestly 4th is my most watched one in the series bc it just a story about jack it has potential and played it perfectly, but the 5th failed so hard bc they try to recreate will and elizabeth, which failed drastically bc those character are shallow AF, and the quality of writing is absolute garbage, it's like written by a highschooler fan fiction, i cringed so hard, but damn the cinematography/design are marvelous and Xavier bardem's performance is top notch, he is balancing between, soft, witty and terrifying at the same time, if only he casted as blackbeard. Bc in 4th movie the most underwhelming part is blackbeard, if the antagonist is not compelling ekough the story bound to be shallow
The 5th film was a identity politics, feminist, girl-power cringefest. Keira Knightley was a good female character. The female protagonist in the 5th film was all about shoving a female destroying the 19th century patriarchy down your throat every 5 mins. 'I'm an intelligent, educated, 19th century scientist and I am a woman - and men are dumb'. She was cringeworthy to watch on screen. There was so much identity politics attached to this annoying feminist character, it was just a case of eye-rolling every time she opened her mouth. Keira Knightley's Elizabeth Swan was a female role done well - she proved you don't need to be a dominant , condescending, narcissistic feminist to be a respectable female character.

I feel like Tom Hollander doesn’t get enough praise for his performance as Beckett. You love to hate him and I love how well he and Depp work off of each other as two people who utterly despise each other and are trying to outmaneuver the other

This whole thing is Jack getting information from Beckett, and Beckett doesn't even know it lol. Such a great seen. Jack gets his compass back, finds out where Davy jones' heart is, and what Becketts plans are, all without Beckett even knowing Jack is never going to do business with him.
First rule of the con: always make the mark think he's got the upper hand. Make an obvious attempt to search for the macguffin, start knocking back shots so he knows who's thinking clearly, and then offer to answer questions.
I miss these old Pirates of the Caribbean movies.... You always got the feeling that Jack Sparrow was always in "control"... In the last two movies, he was just being pushed around!
I would say he got control of thing sin the 4th movie, he got Barbossa to fight Blackbeard and Blackbeard to fight Barbossa allowing him to get to the fountain, he doesn’t want the fountain though, and is able to kill Blackbeard, get rid of the Spanish and English and gets all the ships from Blackbeard. It’s just the beginning of the movie he is not in control.

Actually becket nad jack are accomplices in the EIT company. Jack was capt of a certain ship and and becket was his brother in arms in the royal navy. When jack found out becket illegal dealing of slaves from india he freed them. This pissed off beckett. So beckett had jack ships and her crew murdered and his ship sunk to the bottom. Jack becomes a fugitive because of becket and becomes a pirate (privateer) Later jack would goto davy jones and cut a deal with him for his ship back, which the ship was black because of the scorched burn she got from her sinking. So he renamed her the black pearl.
Yes. You know what. It is their first and last interction throught the trilogy. It is so wierd that the main character and the main villian had only one dialoge.

It’s interesting how Captain Jack Sparrow negotiates with Lord Beckett. Beckett tried to start a negotiation with Jack, assuming that because he has the chips and the winning hand to bargain he can use that to make a small plea to Jack. However, Sparrow got Beckett to talk long enough about the things he knew Beckett would love to hear about, so that he could twist everything in his favor. Jack let the conversation move on to figure out how much Beckett truly knew about the entire situation, and he kept steering the conversation towards topics Beckett was interested in so he could keep Beckett wondering. Because Jack knew Beckett didn’t have the full picture in his head, he was able to teeter the line between blatant lies and indirect truths. I always laugh at Lord Beckett’s final moments because he was dumbfounded by how out-of-hand his plans had gotten, and he knew he didn’t make the right gambles. He over-estimated his adversary’s intelligence because Sparrow was nothing more than a goofy, swashbuckling pirate to him. Love it.

man when I first watched this trilogy all the small discussion parts kind of went over my head because I didn't care. now having watched the trilogy several times over I realized that jack is actually an incredibly intelligent, he plays all side pretty much every time and always finds a way to come out on top of it all. he may not be the best sword duelist but he probably is the best verbal duelist in the whole series.
1:10 I always loved this quick shot over to the pieces of eight. Beckett starts the movie with _one_ - apparently a hard-won, precious artifact. At this point he's got them lined up like props for his toy soldiers. It's a nice, quiet way to communicate how much of a slaughter this fight has become for the pirates
I can never get over just how intelligent they make Jack, it’s borderline baffling how HES able to maneuver around negotiations like this with such an opportunistic prick as Beckett and walk away with his head intact. Fuck I wish there was more of him.

I like how throughout all these movies he never breaks his word. He always does what he says he will do, just not in the way most people would assume he would. Only person he breaks his word to, at all really, is Davy Jones, for which he does die. He is brought back later on, but he dies nonetheless.
You have to appreciate how intelligent the writers were with this film specially the third one, it is full of little detailes and exposition tips that once you discover them you'll say wow this film is GENIUS

Love rewatching this scene. Halfway through Beckett’s formal facade just breaks down, and he can barely hide his curiosity for Jack and how his pirate brain works. It’s so lusty. Any longer and he would have pinned Jack to the wall sure.

The tactic Jack uses is the same he uses in the first movie when making a deal with the navy. He says he will lure the pirates out of hiding so that the navy can catch them. Only he does not say that the pirates are undead/ that the pirates will let calypso free. In the first movie it was done to kill barbosa and in the third to kill becket.
I actually prefer the cut alternate sequence to this, as I am sure many others who love the franchise do. It actually sets in stone Jack Sparrow's morals. Beckett: "Remarkable… The last I saw of that ship, she was on fire… a blackened hulk sinking beneath the waves… We had a deal, Jack. I contracted you to deliver 'cargo' on my behalf, you chose to liberate it." Jack: "People aren't 'cargo', mate." Beckett: "And you incurred a heavy debt to raise her up again, didn't you?"
I think it was a good idea to cut it. Not that Jack’s morals are not interesting, rather it keeps the audience and everyone on their toes. What is Jack willing to do or not do according to his morals? We don’t know exactly where his morals lie and I think that’s super cool. I love the cut scene too but we don’t know whether Jack is a good man or not. That’s pretty snazzy.
What gets me is how Jack just yoinks Beckett's drink right out of his hand and Beckett is like "...Yeah, okay, he's a pirate, that's what he does." He's obviously exasperated by Jack's rudeness, but at the same time, just rolls with it because he knows exactly who he's dealing with. It's a small price for good business, after all.
Something I missed when I watched this scene the first time. Captain Jack Sparrow didn't kill Beckett when he had the chance. He shakes his hand and runs out of the room. When the Captain negotiates, he means business.
This scene in the book and deleted from the movie was originally more in depth for Jack. The reason the Black Peral was originally sunk by Beckett’s order was because Jack refused to follow through a ordered mission to bring People from Africa back as salves. Jack caught half way on during the journey and spun the boat around again brought the people back to Africa. Track down the original Pirates 3 Junior Novel , it’s in there. This is the reason side from Jack just being Jack is why he is my favourite pirate! The guy does actually have a good heart at the end of the day!
I always thought Jack released the slaves in the Caribbean, and that the people you see mourning Jack at Tia Dalma's place at the end of Dead Man's Chest are actually them.
There was no way the cove could withstand blockade for years. The rum would be gone in a month and the pirates would just kill each other at that point.

There is, Beckett hired Jack to ship slaves to America, Jack freed the slaves instead, Beckett caught jack, burned and sank his ship and branded him a pirate. Jack made a deal with Jones to raise that ship up but it was blackened still from the fire, so he renamed it the Black Pearl

When Beckett is looking out the window at first, he says “it’s curious” then it hard cuts, the extended version has him musing that the last time he saw the pearl it was on fire, and a discussion how he hired Jack to “transport cargo, but Jack chose to liberate it” cue one of jacks best lines “people aren’t cargo mate” it’s honestly worth finding the scene, it’s definitely on RU-vid

In plenty fan theories, Beckett and Jack Sparrow were lovers in the past, before Jack "became" a pirate. Or at least VERY close friends. Far fetched really, but... Notice how Beckett calls Jack by his name - not many do this, almost no one at all. They also seem pretty familiar with eachother and Beckett tolerates a lot of Jack's weird stuff. The ironic touch in this is that before we are lead to think barbossa knows jack more than anyone, then turns out beckett knows more than barbossa and in turn it turns out beckett doesnt know jack enough 😂

I act like Jack Sparrow sometimes, when I'm doing something not normal, I just think of it as nothing short of another great manuever. And I also know I'm crazy... Meaning I'm not crazy... The people I talk to are crazy but they just don't realize they are. Knowing that you are crazy, then your sane and have a clear mind. If you do not know you are crazy, then probably you are either insane or just plain stupid.
