I started my lawn today from pure sand dirt...my 5 year old and I moved off the grid to the Mojave Desert 2 years ago to hide from Covid 19 in my Greyhound Bus I converted to a RV..... I sectioned off a 40' x 20' square to grow the grass for my 5 year to play outside....I found an old tree that was dying there was a ton of rich compost under it I got my Truck and scooped a bunch inside the bed and brought it to my campsite, I mixed fertilizer (old school cow manure) and the clay sand dirt thats already here with the compost from the tree......put it down watered the heck out of it... the next day I drove 40 miles to hardware store and rented a hefty Gas powered very heavy industrial Rototiller ( the dirt here is clay and very hard when dry... very soft when wet its so strange ) bought some top soil called Topper...I then rototilled it into the rest of the stuff already put down and wow !!! this desert clay looks so dark and Rich now! it looks like you could grow ANYTHING in this soil now...seeded it with a Bunch of seeds I mixed ( hope I didn't mess up) and added top soil over it with the Compost spreader I got for $20 at the hardware store... I see on line those spreaders are $300 to $400 dollars, I have to go thank them for selling it to me so cheap..(no body has grass around here ! thats probably why ) we have crows here they are very smart in fact the second most smartest creatures on earth....so I got some helium balloons and cut into pieces and tied on sticks, its reflective , an old timer told me that would keep the crows from grubbing on the seeds...its been 105 F everyday for a month so I hope the grass grows I noticed the compost keep the soil very moist under the surface ! ... I'm so excited to see what happens ...I'ma stay in my chair with the water hose in my hand and a ice cold drink next to me three times a day, .... hopefully the baby will be playing and ill be practicing my putting on the green lol ......pray for me ill keep you posted.

Pretty good idea of changing up the old school way of thinking on how to germinate the seed. Not really crazy about the Scotts Lawnsoil. I've used it once and it was too mulch wood chunks in it. Instead of the Scotts stuff, I tend to give a mixture of potting soil and sand.
@koltoncrane3099
@koltoncrane3099 2 года назад
Wood chunks are probably good for long term as they decompose. We have a flower garden it works great but never tried on lawn. What’ve been looking into is making charcoal. You got to soak it and mix it with like chicken manure or something strong because new charcoal will suck nutrients out of your ground if you don’t innoculate it. And then you can add microbes or fungi or whatever and spread it on your lawn. Definitely would help people in drought areas that’d benefit from charcoal absorbing water and slowly releasing it. Vermiculite maybe good to but I read charcoal is better also for soil life.

Couple tips: next time try a clear plastic sheet, instead of dark. Sit it in the sun and it will certainly bake, but don't lose your moisture. In about two days you'll see germination. Other tip: bare spots are bare for a reason. Consider loosening up the soil if it's hard packed like a path, or next to driveway. If not loosened, the grass root won't go any deeper than the mixture you're putting on the ground. Good Luck!

Do u have to let it sit in that wheel barrel for days before spreading or can I just start spreading right after mixing ?
@wwaynemcg
@wwaynemcg 2 года назад
@@granturismo315 I think that was intended for the original poster. For my part, it's easier to get it out and on the ground quickly. It can compost on the ground just as easily. Don't drown it, but keep it evenly moist until it germinates, then slowly reduce the moisture over a couple weeks.

This seems to be a much simpler way to pre germinate than soaking expensive seed in buckets and potentially ending up with a lot of waterlogged or rotting seeds. Plus like some doing the soaking in buckets, they’re saying to change out the water several times during the pre germination time.

Thanks for the video! Couple questions: 1. Is that grass you use a variety of St. Augustine? Is it running with stolons to make a mat or are the stalks rooting down. I’m working with an Augustine type. 2. Aren’t you losing a fair amount of viable seeds because of the depth in the mix? The seed size is so small, and I have been advised to keep the soil mix level pretty shallow to get viable seedlings. Maybe this issue gets resolved when you apply it from the barrow to the lawn? Thanks again for sharing your lawn project! 🤙🏽
@wwaynemcg

Seed can indeed sprout in the dark. But, the grass stems above ground won't grow higher without abundant sunshine.
@RickysWorld6699
@RickysWorld6699 Год назад
That’s very true if you make it too deep you can definitely lose some seeds. It’s kind of something you had to play with. But that’s another reason why you don’t want to germinate too long because the seeds on the bottom well not do as well. Want to bet on the lawn they will thrive. The variety that I’m using here is a variety of rye and bahaia.

After germination which is about 5 to 6 days. Right before you put it on the ground mixing some topsoil. Are usually will take half the wheelbarrow next one whole bag of topsoil. So I get to separate make sure is out of one wheel barrel of germinate seeds. Hope that makes sense

@rickbageard1147
@rickbageard1147 3 года назад
I usually mix in 5050 germinated seeds to whatever topsoil you’re using. And a garden rake as best do you wanna spread a layer of about 2 inches once you mix your germinated seeds with some topsoil about 50-50.

So for the 5-6 days no water ? Then once on lawn its watered every day?
@RickysWorld6699
@RickysWorld6699 2 года назад
Hello. Yes once you water the seeds inside of your wheelbarrow or a bucket let sit for 4 to 5 days. Once seeds are sprouting then its time to mix with top soil or a soil mixture and spread onto your lawn and water everyday for at least a month. But do not overwater as if you overwater you can drowned out your new grass.

Isnt the mixture clumpy after letting it sit for a week? And if the seed is sprouting, wont you hurt the young sprouts when you start spreading them on the ground?
@saidtheblueknight
@saidtheblueknight 3 года назад
You should be spreading the mixture right before it sprouts as to avoid what you just described. This is intended to prime the seed, not germinate/sprout it. Some early risers may come up, but you should time this so that you spread it on the turf a day or two before the type of seed you chose is supposed to sprout.
