For somebody who has no basic idea or wrong way of thinking about electronics/wiring it seems so complicated. Thank you again for this great explanation!

Great video Thanks I am making a variable resistor to fool the computer of a 2008 Honda Odyssey so that the VCM (variable cylinder management )doesn't engage because it causing the engine to burn alot of oil. When engine reaches operating temperature and there is not a heavy load the VCM turns on which means it turns off some cylinders but it also created a vacuum sucking oil into the cylinders and burning it (big cloud out the tail pipe) I bought a bochen 3296 trim (blue square) and i dont know what pins 1/2/3 are for?? Is it the same as you spoke of in this video?? I going to use a 200 ohm and adjust between 84-120 depending on the season. Will the trim pod potentiometer with stand engine bay temperatures or should i put it inside the cabin?? This will trick the computer in to thinking the engine never reaches operating temperature. Thanks for your help Rush

Hello there! Could you please give an advice how to scale a potentiometer for volume control? How big resistance should I choose? I saw a lot of different examples from 50Kohm to 500Kohm and I did not recognize any pattern or rule in the builds that I can use with common sense.

so which of the 3 connectors of the potentiometer do you actually connect to the circuit? Would the middle pin be used as the positive end and either of the side pins as the negative end? And from the end of your video it seems that you only use 3 of the pins if you want to use the pot as a voltage divider, ultimately making it a junction
@SimplyElectronicsOfficial
@SimplyElectronicsOfficial 7 лет назад
A potentiometer is not a polarized component. And yes, 3 pins are used to create a divider, splitting the voltage between two pins

I'm actually working on a circuit right now and I grabbed a random potentiometer so idk what its resistance range is, but I have it connected to a 9v battery and a dc motor (unknown specs as well) and connected the middle pin and one of the side pins to the circuit. However the motor only turns on when I have the knob of the potentiometer positioned at its max position, when I turn the knob away the motor instantly turns off, it doesnt slow down or anything. Could you possibly explain this?

Great video, but why are there three wires running around if the wiper is only in contact with the smallest diameter one?
@olenfersoi8887
@olenfersoi8887 Месяц назад
Watch the video again: The wire connected to the "wiper" is the output. How would anything be output if not for another wire to input something? It's not as if the "pot" creates current "out of thin air"! The third wire goes to ground. The whole idea of the pot is to divide what is input between the output & ground: If the wipe is at the start of the carbon track closest to the input wire, all of the current avoids the track and passes into the wiper & out...no resistance. When the wiper is situated at the other end of the track, everything going out the output wire is exposed to a resistance equal to the value of the pot, and the rest goes out the ground. So, there must be 3 wires: in, main output & ground. Consider that the same amount of current flows regardless of whether if ends of going out the output or goes to ground. Theoretically, a resistor can work without a ground, but then the total current flowing thru it would be only what goes out the output. The effect on the circuit would be very different.

I have about 300 soft white LED strings wired in opposite polarity strings. The cheap driver/transformer (China) keeps cutting out and over the years the kids have snapped odd wires. I have sorted the strings into runs of 10 x 30 and want to drive them ALL from one power source. I have a model railway Gaugemaster EN60 742 controller with 3 stable outputs:- 2x 0-12v DC rated at 1A 12VA max per track and a single AC supply rated at 16v but no amperage is given on the unit. How can I make ALL the lights work continuously. Obviously the DC supply only makes half the lights work and I'm not sure what value of resistance to use to step down the 16V AC voltage to 2v? for the LED's?. Could I use a variable resistance potentiometer? I'm not a complete novice (O level Physics 1986) butI would like some assistance/advice/input for this project Am I better off with a LED driver???

@SimplyElectronicsOfficial

Very inefficient way of varying speed to a motor. You can do it but you'd need a high power potentiometer to do it. DC motors are usually controlled using pwm to vary the voltage to the armature.

@revergacion
@revergacion 7 лет назад
Fair enough, what refference does one use to calculate the value on a potentiometer? - The Pot comes with a value right?! 1K, 100K, 500K... is this value its max, min or avg. Thanks.. hope I made it somewhat clear, not english spoken here.
@SimplyElectronicsOfficial
@SimplyElectronicsOfficial 7 лет назад
Much better phrased. The value of a potentiometer is based on its max resistance. So a 10k pot has a max value of 10k. Min value of all pots are usually 0Ω.

There is none. However a potentiometer becomes a rheostat when the middle pin is connected to one of the other pins. Edit: actually a Rheostat and a variable resistor are the same apparently. Edit Edit: I have no Idea anymore
