Thank you for explaining POTS. My first cardiologist gave me a POTS diagnosis but with another tiltable there was a sharp blood pressure drop indicating OH with and a compensotary HR increase. Supine I have slightly elevated BP and when I stand up it drops to normal range .Except that they also measured my cerebral blood flow, which was -39 versus standing which causes me to be so incredibly symptomatic even seated I get blurred vision. That doc told me to lie down as much as possible to restore bloodflow whenever I get symptomatic, which unfortunately is basically all the time. Don't know what else to do, I 'm housebound because of it. I have EDS and that probably causes the autonomic dysfunction.
Thank you for this :) I was originally told I had POTs but like you describe, my blood pressure rises at first but then just drops dramatically rather than stabilising so they said the symptoms are due to an unknown/non-specific autonomic cause.
Glad it was helpful, Dominique! Of course, in a 1-minute video I can't mention many things that cause POTS, but hopefully it's a starting point for some folks. I made the video in part because many people I see with it think that POTS is somehow a separate, specific disease, rather than the *result* of some other process(es).
I’m delighted you replied! Thank you :) yes, I’ve noticed friends and family with POTS type issues but not as the primary diagnosis, associated with Parkinson’s for example.
Doctor I am take 400mg of dilatin 2x a day 400mg of Carbamazepine extended release topomax 150mg 3x a day plus cogentin to help with the side effects of the medicine . Im sedated beyond belief i inform my primary and my neurologist and nothing happens any advise you can give me
Google is about to register an increase in searches for this condition! Is it a component of other diseases or an independent diagnosis? NEVER heard of it.
It's an independent syndrome, meaning "a collection of linked signs and symptoms that signal a disease or condition," in other words: a description. Among other conditions, POTS is seen in slender, petite people who don't eat enough calories, in people with certain metabolic disorders, and (most importantly in MY world!) in people who have problems with their autonomic nervous system functions which regulate blood pressure and pulse.
