The city centre was ravaged by a bombing raid in the last days of the Second World War in 1945! Most of the ruins were razed and replaced by modern buildings in Soviet style, as Potsdam was part of their occupation zone, later of East Germany! Now, after the reunification of Germany in 1990, the most important historical buildings and facades are gradually being rebuilt! Potsdam is getting more beautiful every year! Fortunately, the palaces and gardens of the Prussian kings, among them Frederik the Great's Sanssouci survived the war unscathed, as they lie somewhat to the west of the city!
@@imperial_soldat The city is never gonna look like it used to, but they did remove some of the communist architecture in the city centre and replaced it with historic restaurations, and buildings with historically-inspired facades. Since 1990 numerous old buildings, that the communists didn't destroy but let fall into decay have also been renovated and look as good as they once did. There are still renovations and restaurations going on in Potsdam, the most recent one being the Garnisonskirche. But there is a tiny fraction of people who are against restoring old buildings, saying it erases history and the charme of the GDR.

Castles were also cleared in Braunschweig, in the west! Only ugly things were created there too! Have you ever seen Bonn or Ulm? Because of the city canal, Potsdam was called the Venice of the North like other cities, which is probably better than Little Venice compared to Amsterdam. But the good Netherlands never rebelled against the Vatican and the other powerful powers! Prussia did, the German Empire did, Old Fritz did! What do you actually know? There is more and more information. I have mostly Germans only and so I hope you find enough about the war against the 3 empires in Europe and against a religion that was used or even worse.

That isn’t Soviet style. If you would know something about architecture then you would see that those buildings in Potsdam absolutely don’t look like those buildings in Kyiw, Minsk or Moscow. That was East German architecture. East Germany had various types of buildings which they constructed. East German panel buildings had a more complex architecture than Soviet ones. In the USSR, the same simple forms of buildings were built over and over again whereas in East Germany, there were differences in the height of buildings, the façades and the layouts.
