Thanks for this, and thanks for including the image of how this block looked like in imperial times 8.02 - the reconstruction is very different, just look at the windows of the building on the corner.

Very nice. There seems to be a movement over there right now especially in Germany and Poland where a lot of this is happening. I’d dare to suggest that perhaps the current frenzy of rebuilding like this was sparked by the Frauenkirche in Dresden and the reimagining of the Berliner Schloss. This is also because the skills to do this have been rediscovered and honed with the outlook that it would be a waste to lose them again, hence this drive to recreate parts of some cities as they were before 1939. I do wonder though if this reinterpretation of the past might end up making these places look like a giant pastiche. Sure, the buildings are fabulous and they mirror what was there, but they lack the earthiness and grittiness of any original building wearing its historical scars. It all looks so perfectly new making no statement of history in each building even though they appear from an earlier, more gracious time. It would indeed be most unfortunate if it all just ends up looking like a giant movie set. A facade if you will, with no substance behind it. I realise that’s not the aim, but it is the danger. Personally, I love seeing the restoration of the original street layouts and the buildings, but it all can never replace what was there fully. These new buildings will probably need a full century of their own to soften and age and develop patina. Then there’s the historical context. It’s sort of like trying to erase what happened. My interpretation. Love it all the same, can’t wait to see Potsdam later this year…

Very well stated. It can never be as it originally was, as woderfully skillful as the rebuilding is. We can admire and be thankful for the amazing efforts though! It is shameful the RAF decided to do this on April 14, 1945, 3 WEEKS before the end of the war. So much was already lost and gone by early February. If the RAF had just spared 4 priceless places in the closing weeks; Dresden, Wurzburg, Hildesheim and Potsdam. And the Soviets 3 more; Danzig, Breslau and Neisse, the war would have still ended in a complete allied victory. The world could have still had these treasures to wonder at the creativity of artisans, craftsmen, architects, sculptors and painters over CENTURIES. Such senseless destruction. Most people living in today's world have no knowledge of these losses. The ongoing and incredulous lies that the Germans destroyed Danzig, (they did NOT! It was the Soviet army) and "most" of Breslau (parts yes, in the defense of the city but the Soviet army FAR MORE) need to end. The completely unnecessary destruction of these places, the World's heritage, were war crimes by the allies; there is no other way to put it. However, when the Red army got to Potsdam at the end of April, the remaining palaces and churches in the outlying areas were spared. The General in charge would not allow them to be burned up. The city center, courtesy of the RAF, was already gone.

As you said, give these buildings hundred years or more and they will have their context in history with a properly aged look. You can see these years as a part of the reconstructon.

Don’t like so much this kind of rebuilding. It reminds me like a Disney Fake Castles or something like that. History is the history and we can’t rebuild buildings that they are lost.

@Baryogenese

I think you missed an important detail here, old buildings are often renovated many times during the ages, even partly rebuilt in different ways. If you have a 400 year old building, it is very likely that only the inner core of the walls is really that old. So i think, there's not much of a difference if you reconstruct it completely today.
@serfin01
@serfin01 14 дней назад
@@Baryogenese I’m not agree with you. It’s very different to maintain an old building or monument than to rebuilding it completely by nationalist or any absurd reasons.
