►►► DESCRIPTION
The Shimpo Aspire pottery wheel with the hand crank is a great blend of portability, quality, and price. Shimpo is a trusted name in ceramics and the hand crank version of this wheel is ideal for people getting started on the wheel. This was my first commercial potters wheel to buy and it's still one of my favorites. With the absence of the foot petal, I would say this wheel is the MOST portable wheel on the market that I've used.

Thank you so much for the video! I just got one for my partner. She has always wanted to get back into ceramics but none of the studios are open due to the pandemic. It is her birthday this upcoming Sunday, so I hope she enjoys the surprise!

Hey Wanderlust. They are called Contico foot lockers I think. honestly, they are harder to find these days. I have moved around overseas a lot so we have like 40 of these scattered across 3 countries :). they are super helpful. If I were just starting out I would get a similar size at some retail outlet that has them in stock. I use them for everything!

Hi there! Nice vid. I watched it for the first time a couple of months and today I got my brand new Aspire of the post. I have a quick question. Is there a proper way/trick to put the plastic bats onto the wheel head? After I put mines several times, they spin a little bit off centre even though the bare wheel head is really centered. Do you think this would be a problem when throwing? Thanks!
@OutpostPottery
@OutpostPottery 3 года назад
Hey Juan. Congratulations on your new Aspire. I don't think you will regret that purchase. I'm not sure exactly what's going on with your bat though? There should be 2 little pins sticking out of the wheel head. These are called "bat pins". They are like a bolt with allen wrench hole for screwing it in on one side and a wing nut on the reverse end. these bat pins should snuggly fit into the holes on your blue plastic bats. I would double check that you have the bat pins installed on your wheel head. Let me know if that's not right and we can brainstorm further. Good luck!

I'm wondering how it would work with the Chinese $200 wheel you reviewed to use the Shinpo bats and drill holes, install nuts and bolt in the wheel 6" apart?
@OutpostPottery
@OutpostPottery 3 года назад
I think it would honestly. keep in mind that bat pin holes for MOST bats are either 9" or 10". The Aspire is the only one I've ever seen be 6" apart. I thought about trying to rig something up on the edge of the wheelhead on the "solid budget" wheel but haven't tried it yet. If you do it GeoChaben, please let me know! I'd love to see what you come up with!

Thanks for the review. I normally throw on 6" bisque tiles. Do you know of they will fit between the bat pins? Also I'm a full time studio potter. The hand lever is intriguing, but I'm accustomed to foot pedals on my stationary wheels. Which would you recommend for someone with a lot of experience?
@OutpostPottery
@OutpostPottery 2 года назад
Hey Kristen. I think i responded to this on email but i didn't realize. you were throwing on the Apsire here... My bad! I'm sorry if that messes you up. I do believe a 6" tile will fit between the bat pins there... they are 7" center bat pins if i remmber correctly. however, I'm in the process of making a few variations of the tile spinner for various sized tiles and wheel heads. I'll let you know when we get those out. Thanks for asking!.
@kristenvanpatten3854
@kristenvanpatten3854 2 года назад
@@OutpostPottery no worries. I'm currently throwing on an older Brent C. It's a workhorse, and I also have a Brent "A" which was my main wheel for years. I'm about to buy myself a shimpo aspire for its compact size and maneuverability, which is why I commented above. I ultimately decided on the foot pedal model since that's what I'm accustomed to. Regarding the tile spinner, I printed one out for my Brent wheel, but I'll have to enlarge the opening a hair to accommodate the bisque tiles I use because they have a couple of nubs on each side that put them a little over 6".

I'm thinking about buying this one. Just wondering it the lever control is a limitation compared to the food pedals?
@OutpostPottery
@OutpostPottery 2 года назад
The only context it is a factor has been when "throwing off the hump" - which throwing a bunch of vessels from the same big chunk of clay. I usually use my foot to spin the wheel as i'm cutting in that circumstance. However, i am still able to do it with the lever. I actually think the lever might be easier to learn for beginners than the petal. Hope that helps Teun! Thanks for asking -mj

PLEASE could you answer a question for me? I've just bought the Shimpo Aspire. When the wheel starts turning, there is a quiet "tapping" sound coming from the motor. When it gets faster and to full speed, the tapping sound is more prominent (and slightly annoying). Could you please let me know if your Shimpos also have this tapping sound, or if you can only here the normal constant hum of the motor? Kind regards, Richard.
@OutpostPottery
@OutpostPottery 2 года назад
So sorry to be late on the response Richard! I have had the tapping sound before. I opened it up and was able to clean off the belt inside and it went away. These wheels are pretty simple inside. As long as your not voiding any warranty i wouldn't be nervous to give it a try. i can't remember exactly what I did in there or i would tell you. it's been a few years. hope that helps! -mj

@@OutpostPottery that's ok, thanks for replying anyway. I wheel was brand new, it made the noise as soon as I switched it on. But the supplier sent a replacement belt and said it could of been a kink in the belt because of sitting for ages not being used yet. The replacement belt is much quieter so I'm happy with it now. I just need to learn how to use it now!

Hey Mary. The box is a Contico storage locker. They used to sell them in America at Academy, the Container Store and Walmart but I haven't seen them in several years. Dimensions are exactly what fits on the plane - I think about 13" tall. We used these for international moves and many trips home. They are perfect for travel. Unfortunately I can't find them anymore! Let me know if you find them anywhere!!!

Hey, I have this wheel but have been having problems the the bat coming off when I apply too much pressure on the outside. It's making it really hard to make and trim my larger pieces. Any recommendations? I'm really close to just super glueing the bat on at this point(lol)
@kiddywriter
@kiddywriter 3 года назад
Sophia..I have this one and I cut out a circle from craft foam, made the 2 holes and my bat goes over it which makes the bat more stable and less wobbly. Also...put a little water in each of the bat holes before putting on the wheel.
@OutpostPottery

That's a good idea Mary! I haven't experienced this problem, Sophia. I'm sure it's frustrating :( How much are you throwing when you experience this? How much weight of clay are you centering? I will be looking for this problem now and will ask my daughter to keep an eye out for it, too.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounded like you got the Shimpo Aspire in Malaysia? I'm from Malaysia, and was wondering if you could point me as to where to get the Shimpo? Thanks in advance!
@OutpostPottery
@OutpostPottery 3 года назад
Yes I did! And it's GREAT to have a Malaysian on this thread! Thanks for asking Huril. I bought my wheel in Ipoh from Syarikat Ceramech. I think his name was Mr. Lim and his wife or associate was named Jenifer. I interacted primarily with her and they were very helpful. There are several local wheel and kiln manufacturers in Ipoh - although the Shimpo i bought from him was imported from Australia. My next step would have been to work with someone local there to build a gas kiln. Ipoh is a the hub for pottery in Peninsula Malaysia. There's also a pottery center funded by the national government in nearby Kuala Kangsar - called Kerajinantangan or something. I visited there once back in 2018 and it was a very robust operation! Mostly slip casting but I met there a super cool and talented potter there named Remi. Kuala Kangsar is where they mine the clay and is the cheapest place to get lots of good clay! Dr. Shamsu of Sila Studio is also a great resource for meeting local potters. He was kind of a mentor of sorts for me as I was rekindling my love for pottery. He's got a beautiful studio in Balik Pulau in Penang and he's a really great guy. He connected me with so many amazing potters across the peninsula as well as East Malaysia. You're in a really culturally rich area Huril. I'm so glad you're here on this thread!
