Damnit Kevin, I’ve clicked on your video and now I’m in the green thumb mood. The Lowe’s and Home Depot right next to me will not get out of this unscathed
@@epichomesteading If that was to me, I was watching when the only thing open was bars. Lol. And as much as I like the idea of a plant bar...... we don't have one locally. Lol.
It was nice seeing "out of character" Jaques. Kind of felt like a special behind the scenes moment. I saw some other comments saying it would be neat to see you guys take in the city sights! I concur, maybe upload the outtakes as a members only special
Kevin you have produced one of the best catalogs I have ever seen. I read it like a novel. I absorb as much as I can then put it away for a bit them come back to it. So much good info and so well done.
I'm so glad you got to spend a couple days just being in Seattle, hope you had a nice visit. Was great to see you at the garden show. Glad you found where they moved your books, I knew they'd sell out! Another word that came to mind during the panel discussion was "Grace" in all you do, extending grace to yourself and others is a hallmark of your vibe. You don't claim to know all-be all and are very generously sharing your journey and lifting others as you rise. Best of luck to you and yours. Carry on!
I'm jumping on the bandwagon for more vids with Kevin and Jacques exploring different places. Great stuff! Seriously though "Epic Travels" needs to exist.
Love these style of videos mixed in with the normal content! Was sad to miss you at the Garden Festival- next year y'all should have a booth! I only saw one booth selling seed starting gear (silicone pots) that wasn't a greenhouse, and I definitely would have snagged some 4 cells for up-potting my 6-cells. Would love to see more edible gardening booths and talks there next year!
It is always hard to play catch up after travel - the garden grows so much in your absence! We have a ton of worms now too, I think all the rain really helps. I used to live near Seattle and I loved Pikes Place Market, my favorite was the fish vendor throwing the fish across the aisle! I definitely vote for the new stainless steel plant markers! I hate throwing the plastic ones away and they always break so fast. I have tried wood ones and they just get dark and hard to read, and the copper ones fade over time. Today I am enjoying the sunshine and putting together my new birdies beds!
The garden never seems to grow that fast once you're chilling at home...go away for a week or 2, and they seem to get separation anxiety or something...boom!
Perfect timing Kevin I need this video as a guide to pot up my tomatoes Thank you for always sharing your knowledge of gardening You really cultivate everyone’s green thumb Did I see Jacque eating siopao? I love the metal plant tag I am excited for spring to sprung 😊
I purchased garlic from Epic gardening, refrigerated them for way too long, planted all of the cloves even the not great ones. They sprouted within 10 days and were off to the garlic races. Then all of the California rain dumped on them. Multiple rain storms over the weeks that kept the from drying at any level. They started to look a little yellow but are now back to green and amazing! They are planted in rows and there are 4 blank areas where nothing came up so most of the cloves sprouted and are doing really well. I don’t know what the garlic head will be like but so far so good and very satisfying.
Just For Knowing In Iran We Make Pickle's From Green Tomatoes!!! Just put A few Green Tomatoes in the Jar and Add Garlic Salt Chilli and Vinegar Let it stay in the jar for a few days !!! If you have green tomatoes , try it you might fall in love with it
With long tomato seedlings like that, I like to cut toilet paper rolls in half and use that as support for baby tomatoes. It helps them a lot in the beginning and it’s recycling!
Thank you for reminding me why I saved a bunch and stashed them away. As I was organizing my stuff for this season I found them and couldn't remember what I saved them for. This was it!
Welcome to the beautiful PNW, I hope you guys had a great time and favorable weather during your visit! On the other side of Washington I can’t plant out my tomatoes until the end of May at the earliest so I will just live vicariously through you folks who don’t have winter for three more months 🥲
@@csrazle554 Solidarity my friend 🤝🏼 I’ve had frost as late as Memorial Day weekend so I pretty much plan for not being able to plant tender stuff until the first of June but occasionally we get a pretty mild May. I won’t start my tomato seeds for another month. At least I have started peppers and onions and such to fawn over in my seedling shelves while everyone else is actually gardening outside.
Have you followed Susan Mulvihill "Susan In the Garden" she is in Spokane and has recently mentioned joining with the Epic Gardening universe! So exciting to see the ever expanding talent and knowledge ❤
My hubby used to work at Pike Place in the mid 80s. He made candy, fudge and caramel apples. He grew up in Seattle. I loved visiting Seattle! We live in California, since '88.
I grew Chocolate sprinkles here in New Zealand. They're a solid producer and tasty as. They're very very tough. I had one in the ground outdoor still producing in late autumn.
Hey James, what part/climate of NZ? Like, coastal, mountain, plains? Not sure how your hardiness zones compare to the US. I'm in northern New Mexico, 6900 feet, dry and sunny 280 days. Extra windy spring/autumn, but a relatively short growing season for tomatoes: late April to Early November before first frost.
@@Neenerella333 I was in Auckland, so that's Zone 8a, with a South/East facing property that received not much Sun due to tall trees. It gets cold and humidity is high in autumn. *Note South/East facing would be your North/East facing equivalent there, so pretty shit. Chocolate sprinkles is a hybrid and hybrids will always do better than heritage, this is why it survived. I kept the seeds and they all stayed true to type considering it being a hybrid.
I think the stainless steel tags you showed will be a good "budget", but long lasting tag, but over time it will probably still rust in the wet, ion filled soil in the garden. will last longer than plastic for sure but theyre definately not going to be a "forever" thing I imagine. I have seen some porceline..? glazed clay..? whatever the material is called. That along with Glass or polished granite would probably make much longer lasting tags given the conditions, since all are basically (or literally) just rock. All of which would probably do quite well on the store, because imagine coloured glass markers, could have a chart in your greenhouse of what colour is which and then be able to look out and see at a glance which is which. I suppose you could do the same with the glazed clay ones. different coloured glazes, they would also be easy to read off of which the glass might struggle with. hope to see what ends up sticking though.
I have been thinking about using some aluminum pop cans to cut up and make tags. Would be able to use stamp or something to label, or just use a garden marker or grease pencil on the. Being aluminum should avoid the rust issue, and still be durable while avoiding plastics.
I'm here in 10a central FL and it's incredible the way cold fronts affect you in California even though it's generally a warmer zone. Fortunately we were not impacted by the large cold front this year and I took advantage and got tomatoes planted in early Feb. Based on how warm winter was here, everything seems to be about a month ahead, which concerns me a little about the heat that might come this summer.
Loved the trip video. Mee Sum pastry is great. The stainless tags look great. Don't love plastic. That's partly why i seed start. Have used Popsicle sticks because they bio degrade. Stainless looks cool.
I was _just_ thinking the other day when I was planting my seeds that I wish somebody had some sort of metal plant tag that I could write on, because I refuse to use the plastic tags. So I used popsicle sticks instead and wrote on those, but a good metal reusable one would be ✨awesome.✨
Thank you for the education you provide to budding/struggling gardeners. Through the years it’s been hit or miss. I’m endeavoring to improve my gardening habits for a better outcome when harvesting.
love chocolate sprinkles. found 1 last year in april and it produced from june to a dec freeze in new orleans. Had so many i was able to get seeds to hopefully do more this yr. not really an issue but it grew over 10+ft, went about 5ft up then just kept going another 5+ft
I loved this video. Please tell me Jacque is going to be at the Aquascape event in July. You and Laura were the first two gardeners suggested to me in 2020. You are both informative and entertaining. I love the addition of Jacque to your site. Just thrilled to be in the same event as you both. My bday present to myself!! Love my grow bags and Birdies beds and 6 cells!
We just bought your 4cell pots for our lettuce ,, we found them at pikes in atlanta . Great reusable starter pots !! So great to see y’all’s brand this far east
Love the montage! :) If my tomatoes get too long n leggy I use tp rolls on top of the soil and pot up in the cells/pots and put tp rolls around also and put soil in there also, you can pull the whole thing out and plant deeper, roll disapears and no transplant shock or very little. :)
OMG Seattle!!! If you're back up here come to the Snoqualmie Valley!!! We have blueberry and lavender farms out the yang, and I could show you my secret blackberry spot! I pick like 6 pounds in 45 min! This was GREAT!!! Love this city up here!
Looks like you guys had a great time! It's so fun getting to see how far your homestead has come since you first started the channel! Everything is look amazing. Great work, Kevin!
SO happy you guys made it up to our area of the map! Devastated I couldn't go to the garden show but I'm sure for those who got to see you they had a blast. Very happy you specifically got coffee and some bao while on your trip.
Loved this style of video! Just relaxed and vlog style with what you’re doing in the garden. I really enjoyed it! And I know you enjoy it like this too, Kevin!
I really like the way you are going with this channel. It's almost like we are right next to you when you are filming yourself doing some things in the garden while sharing some good knowledge and tips. You and Mark (the Dad Joke Gardener from Australia aka Self Sufficient Me 😁) were the first RU-vid Gardeners that i found a few years ago and you both are still my favorites. Thank You so much for inspiring and showing all of us what you can achieve in the garden and in life! 🙏☀️
I am jealous that you are able to start seeds so early and already have your seedlings so ready for transplant whenever the weather is right! I live in Central FL, so it's not an issue for most of the year, but our "winter" is sort of obnoxiously cold (for here..), can get a light frost if it gets in the low 30's. My garage is sweltering 10 months out of the year, and then frigid for 2 lol, so seed starting indoors has been a little challenging, though the heat mat seems to be helping. I was thinking about making a faux greenhouse out of some acrylic sheets fashioned together, I usually do about 2-3 of the epic trays per round, depending on time of year, so I think it is doable. May make a few small holes just to allow some ventilation. Sorry, long tangent, seedlings look great!
I saw you guys on the speaker list and wasnt able to make it the days you presented-I was bummed! I hope I can can catch you guys next time if you go again! ☕🌱
Got my Epic indoor grow light with attached tray yesterday! Looks to be great quality and it was super easy to assemble. Can't wait to get my seeds under there!!
chocolate sprinkle cherry tomato is my favor!! as I am not a very good at grow vegies or fruits, three years ago I acidentally bought a starter from HD and it grow like craze, not just that it is so dellicious!! I told all my friends and some of them starts grow it, all of them are so happy about it!
Wish I knew you were going. I'm a born and raised Seattlite. Next time you go, if you like Seafood, hit an Ivars (Best clam chowder) and an Anthony's. These are excellent restaurants.
Ooooo. I do wish I had known you were in Seattle. I would have loved to see you guys in person! Thank you for the great content you all produce. Keeps me going!!
Look at your plants. ❤ Lo e the plant tags. 😁👍 Up here, it's up to 7°, and only 3 inches of snow on the ground. Getting close to time to plant seed trays. I'll start dropping seeds, in trays, next week.
I want to get started planting so bad, but it’s 40 degrees and keeps threatening to snow. So I’m just going to keep watching to live out my garden dreams vicariously until it starts to warm up 😅
Spring is coming, have the fever today for sure with 62F in zone 6a! Lots of blueberry bush pruning and fertilizing and acidifying happening over on the east coast! Great to see you guys.
I was so excited to see you in person at the garden show Kevin. I was the fangirl who stopped you on Saturday to get a picture. ❤ Love your videos and so glad you had fun in Seattle.
My tomatoes just sprouted. We’re growing Black Cherry, Italian Ice, and Sunrise Bumblebee. I love cherry tomatoes. I mostly growing for color, although Black Cherry is my favorite tasting tomato. I also trying to grow the cherry seeds from last fall, but have no idea if they’re even sproutable. And lastly I’m growing Jaune et Vent Patty Pans.
Garden looks great Kevin. I have found not thinning beets gives a decent second or even sometimes a third flush. They will push away from each other well and as you harvest it will allow others to take up space. Carrots obviously dont work out so well but baby veggies are so posh! 😂😊
You need to come back to PNW and come see the hydrangea gardens up near Seattle! Do you guys plan on coming back this way for other gardening events?? Def need to know for next time so i can go see you guys!
I really like the stainless steel plant tag idea, to mitigate all that plastic use. I remember a while back you mentioned that something was brewing with that, cool to see it still on the table! I recently started using the tongue depressor sized craft sticks lol, just got a pack of like 200 for $7, when I'm done with them they just get broken and buried in the soil! Got the tip from Petrina on the Homegrown Florida channel :D
My husband got me tongue depressor size instead of popsicle and I was " oh no" BUT they were great for labelling the cups in my Green Stalk. zone 5 here getting very itchy to start seeds but too early still
@@gingerdean1521I honestly love using them haha, and I feel better since they're biodegradable. I will say, indoors, a heat mat, grow light, and a humidity dome work WONDERS in cold weather, if you wanted to get a jump on it :)
Love your montage of your time in Seattle 👍. I’ve grown Chocolate Sprinkles tomatoes for the past few years; great taste and quite productive. Grown in Alberta zone 3.
A video on how you get your seedlings to grow that vigorous in the 6-cells would be awesome! I never can seem to get my seedlings to grow as big or vigorous as you do in such a small pot.
It's the brassicas! Some brassicas actually give off a substance that kills mycorrhizal fungi. If anything, the fungi web might stop right next to the cabbages haha.
