Pouakai Tarns offer the most magical view of Mount Taranaki, in the right conditions. That means a less cloudy, sunny day and that is crucial - the mountain is perfectly reflected in the water, creating a scene so magical that it’s really hard to believe that it’s real. It is more magical at early winter or earl spring, the top of the mountain is visible with snow and rest is green.
You need to start from Mangorei Track trailhead, which is located 19km and roughly an 18 minute drive from New Plymouth. There is a very large car park, which is free and has no time limit. There are toilets at thecar park and then again at the Pouakai Hut. This track is 6.3km to the trans and coming back it is 12.6km and around 800m elevation gain you will get, going through the jungle and it's little bit moderate hike, not that easy, espcially with little kids who cannot walk this far.
