Thanks for watching. This chainsaw starts just fine but it won't idle. You pretty much have to do your best Texas Chainsaw Massacre impersonation to use it. The carb was gone through and adjusted and it solved the problem. Please check out my other videos and consider subscribing.

I've cut thousands of chord wood with two poulan saws, they're cheap, and easy to maintain. Routine maintenance and keeping fuel mix correct and air filter and carb clean, sharp chain etc. For the price, and the ease of use, I've never had a bad one. We own six in total.

I have had my Poulan Pro 295 for 15 years and it has always started on the first pull. This is the first year it has given me trouble. My secret(My Grandpa taught me to always dump the gas out of small engines at the end of each day, so they won't sludge up the carbeurator). The big picture is gas is cheap. Hiring someone to perform maintenance every year or buying another is expensive.
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE

This very well may have helped me fix an issue with my 245a Poulan. Ill update later after i physically fight the carburetor on this saw because its built in such a way that the carb bolts that hold the carb to the saw are facing towards the back to thread in (bolt head is facing away from the throttle assembly) I gotta say. Ive been watching you for a long time, everything you post has been helpful to me in maintaining my lawn equipment and just gaining general knowledge over the past year.

Watched this video for the hell of it. You did an excellent job describing what to do. I ESPECIALLY liked when you noted the gasket placement when reassembly. Sometimes, when we disassemble things, a gasket will stick and we can see that it in fact had one. Oftentimes though, they can drop out of view and one might think there was none right from new. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Have a great day.

I used a Poulan Wild Thing for 3 years to cut firewood for my house. Other than being an absolute bastard to start, it did the job. Also had to adjust the chain tension by hand since the adjustment screw broke the first day. Not a problem though, just grab the bar, pull and lift a bit and tighten the nuts. Never had to touch the carb. FOund a second one on sale a few years ago, new in the box for $60. Could not pass that up, so now I have 2. And for the love of all that is holy, get that saw out of the damn dirt and debris!

friendly suggestion: Keep dirt off the chain at all times. You idled the saw at the start of the video on the ground and probably ran some dirt through it. While dirt seems soft, it's actually full of minerals which dull the blade much faster than cutting wood does. After a friend tipped me on this, my blades last *much* longer!

Nice little tutorial, but my experience is that on most any saw you won't have stability in running until you have the idle speed in range, and once you have that the low and hi speed mixtures respond precisely and predictably. You were spinning those mixtures back and forth and the chain was spinning away on idle, letting way too much air past the throttle plate, killing low end response. Also these Poulans need a .030 spark plug gap for good hot starting.

I have not misused or abused them but have run them through the reamer and cut cords upon cords and with proper maintenance these saws are strong and reliable. Same as any saw. I’m not an expert but I own a Poulan wood shark and I have narrowed down my problem to the spark plug causing a lot of problems. Hard starting and not running properly. The solution is I sandpapered the contacts of the spark plug to bare shiny metal and always keep a full tank of gas. I also turned the adjustment screws forward and backward but didn’t change the factory setting. Also I have to lock the throttle when starting as stated in the manual Starting procedure. Poulan 1950 Woodshark. Thanks Spark plug had black coating limiting the spark

Them old poulan pro 295 and 4620's were damn good saws for the money , I abused the shit outta mine cutting 5-7 cords of wood a year right outt the forest myself for about 6 years straight before I developed piston ring wear significant enough to justify a piston and ring replacement , that's impressive for a $179-199 chainsaw

Awesome video, well done! So if my chainsaw won't start, turn both screws all the way in then out 1 and 1/2 turns, and then only work with the hi screw? Do I need to adjust the low screw it all? What is the low screw for anyway?
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE 4 года назад
Thanks for the comment. Well 1.5 turns out is a place to start. What I would do is turn both screws in and establish how many turns they were at first. Then you can try 1.5 turns. However most of the time your chainsaw won't start because it has sat a long time with gas in the tank. That almost guarantees that the carb will need to be cleaned, rebuilt or even replaced.

I have the same saw in my shop that I did a carb redo on .... I am waiting to do a video on it to put it back together........ Poulans are a very good saw... Like these Pro Models you worked on...... Husqvarna makes them and Craftsman saws also...... If anyone has their dad's favorite saw from Sears and they swear it's the best saw out there, then they have a Poulan saw...... Poulan was bought out by Husky a few years back and still have a great product...... Some people just don't treat cheaper priced saws well..... If they bought a 400 Husqvarna or Stihl they would spit shine that saw ,,,,,, LOL...... I noticed you had hell trying to adjust the carb while the saw was running..... I hate the slotted screws... I rather the splined, pac man ETC ETC for adjusting while running... They don't vibrate off the jet..... I do have a special slotted driver with a sleeve over the the head of the driver to eliminate that issue.... Plus Tard Mon Ami ~!~!

I never forget the Stihl recommended procedure for the MS 460. Adjust idle to 3300. Lean out the L jet for max RPM, NTE 3,750. If it exceeds this value, reset idle and redo the L jet for maximum rpm. Then, richen up the L jet until .rPM is 2,500. Check H with tach NTE 13,000. I usually set mine at 12,600-12,800. The reason you richen up the L jet on the 460 is to make sure it is running rich at startup, unless you like to hear it pop and take your arm off. It will do this. I also use this same basic tuning procedure on any thumper. I like my wrist and shoulder, too.

Just as he put the carburetor on though it looked like he had dirt on that gasket, maybe I’m seeing things. I’d replace the fuel, return and then a vacuum lines 1st though. Cheap to do it only takes a pinhole that you won’t see.

You should try tunning my dad's Poulan 2000. It will idle but with a spinning chain, and as soon as you lower the RPMs any further to correct it the engine dies. Rebuilt the carb, replaced lines, everything! Yet no luck, i spent a whole afternoon playing with the mixture screws and almost burned the thing up. I've since given up on it and (for safety reasons) left it like it was before; you let off the acceleretor and it stalls.
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE 8 месяцев назад
I see, have you considered that there's in intake leak at the carb or insulator and that's why the idle speed is too fast?
@enzoperruccio
@enzoperruccio 8 месяцев назад
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE It's not that it idles too fast, I've compared it to other chainsaws of similar size and it sounds pretty on par. The problem is that you can't slow it down enough to prevent the chain from spinning, because if you turn the throttle stop past a certain point the engine will begin to struggle and die shortly after. So It's basically in this limbo where you can make it spin the chain and idle, or not spin the chain and die. Dad says it's been like this since day one, so who knows, maybe we're dealing with a deep and obscure factory defect.

poor idle can be as little as adjusting the 'L' screw and the 'H' screw is to adjust and smooth high speed mixture of fuel/air. I would have first back the 'L' screw about 1/4 or 1/2 turn counter-clockwise to richen the mixture and speed up the idle. Cleaning debris from the carb is a good move for general purposes...

Quick question. I've scoured youtube and I cannot find an answer to this one. My fuel cap does not appear to be vented and there seems to be no return line from the carb to the tank for venting. Do you know how this model gets vented? My model is really old (2775). Your's looks like the same model so maybe you have the same fuel cap.
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE
@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE 4 года назад
There is only one fuel line on this model because there isn't a primer bulb. There should be a small hole in the middle of the fuel cap and on the other side of the cap should be a rubber duck bill looking thing. Are you looking at the oil cap perhaps?
@Wingloader
@Wingloader 4 года назад
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE I'm looking at the fuel cap. :-) cleaned the cap and there is no hole in it. I even probed around with an awl to see if there was a hole that is just not visible and that thing is solid plastic. Funny thing is that when I open the cap, it seems pressurized so probably not drawing a vacuum. The cap retainer is just a ball socked and there is no duck bill I can see. I tried popping out the ball (retainer) and it is not removable without damaging it. Thanks for the quick reply. I'll take care of the other things you detailed in your video and if I still have issues, I'll try drilling another hole up where the fuel line goes in, push in a chunk of tubing and put a check valve on it. I had to replace the fuel line as it crumbled into dust so I have spare tubing.
