That is a great question and the answer is a mystery... perhaps conductors and artistic directors (who are responsible for programming) are not familiar with it?
This work is so French; by turns witty, solemn, profound, even cynical, redolent of Croissant, confiture good conversation, Citroen deux chevaux. And Maroussia Gentet is the elusive image of Yvonne de Gallette who haunts Le Grand Meaulnes . A delightful performance of an idiosyncratic but evocative work.
I have been listening to piano concertos for 50 years and missed this one completely. What beautiful music! Dave Hurwitz (Classics Today) said that Poulenc wrote beautiful tunes and here are some for sure. Thank you France Musique and musicians for making this delightful concert available.
your prof sounds to me like an ultra snob with academic complex who rejects any 20th century music that is not harshly dissonant, 12 tone, or experimental. Am i right or nah
"How could you hate this"? Well Thomas Beecham had a theory about musicologists. "People who know all about the theory of music but can't hear it" Absolutely brilliant - lol
Felicitaciones!
Echt bewundernswert!
When you've got too many wonderfull themes you don't need and have to develop them... Develop themes means for me lack of inspiration (sorry for my english)
Poulenc mi affascina e l'interpretazione della pianista è ottima, leggiadra e lieve. Accarezza quasi il piano.
It's quite uncharacteristic of me to listen to this kind of sweet romantic music (I prefer impressionism, the avant-garde and contemporary classical music), beautiful music is beautiful music. I absooutely love this.
CONCERTO per piano in do diesis min.
The tempo indication in the score for the first mouvement is quarter note equals 84. That is by far much faster than the tempo chosen for this performance. The composer's tempo indications are part of the work, as are the notes and rhythms. They must be taken into serious consideration.
Does anybody know why Poulenc called this one (once called "Concerto number 1" because other ones were expected) *"le concerto casquette"* ??? (I do not)
He used to say it was a "Concerto en casquette" (Concerto with a cap), opposite to a proper classical hat, meaning that the score that is "dressed casually" and doesn't take itself too seriously. It quotes indeed some popular music in the last movement.
To Jean-Claude Adda. I give you a line from one of my short stories. Clare went into the opening phrase of Poulenc's flute sonata, such elegant, refined, melancholy music, and so totally French. So I think I know something about France and French music. I simply said Poulenc didn't know how to develop his ideas. Which is true. I think you don't know your musical arse from your elbow. AB
Anyone notice this is not typical 88 key piano... looks like pretty wide range and have different tone color too. Is the extra-range piano require to play this?
I wouldn`t say ``much`` too slow but yes this performance could do with more momentum. However what a pleasure to hear Poulenc`s wonderful work instead of yet another Beethoven, Brahms etc overplayed concerto.
Agree. Leaden, which I suspect is the pianist's doing. As evidence, I offer Maestro Franck's exquisite interpretation of Poulenc's "Litanies à la Vierge noire" with an incredibly well prepared children's chorus also uploaded onto RU-vid.
Too slow and draggy! Poulenc is notoriously exciting in what he writes and this is missing from this performance. Yes, the lyric side of Poulenc is brilliantly depicted, but where is the excitement that Poulenc does so well? Poulenc is a master of themes. Yes, we are able to follow the development very well by the slow tempo, but what is missing is the drama and sparkle! Poulenc is no "Beethoven", but he is a "Saint Saens."
Merci d'avance.
