Poured Acrylic painting GLUE POURING MEDIUM TUTORIAL #1 by Maigan Lynn

I find I get asked these questions A LOT - "How do you mix your pouring medium?", "How do you mix your paints?", "How do you consistently do a galaxy pour??" So I thought I would do a series of tutorials to help answer some of these questions. Please keep in mind that these are just my own personal methods of doing things - it's not written in stone and if it doesn't work for you then thats totally ok - there are hundreds of different pouring tutorial videos out there and hundreds of different artists who do it differently than I do.
The first tutorial is how I mix my pouring medium. I use either Glue-All or ModgePodge - either one is fine - and I mix 2/3 glue to 1/3 water and I shake like crazy. That's it! I came across this method when I was first learning and it's always been my favorite. Keep in mind that I'm more drawn to mediums that will allow for a variance in cell size and structure as well as texture. For me, the busier, the better! Which is part of the reason I do love working with the glue.
I generally mix a bunch of the pouring medium at once. If there's any left at the end, as long as the container is covered, it' keeps. I've only on very few instances had to deal with 'string' in the mix but it was because some of the parts that dried at the top had fallen in.
Please subscribe so you can check back for my next tutorial: How I mix my paints.
I'll be adding new videos every Monday and Thursday so don't forget to give me a Like, SUBSCRIBE, and leave a comment to let me know what you think! Feel free to ask any questions as well!

I will try your mix as I don't like using silicone. I try not to waste paint either. When I use craft paint and it all won't come out, I cut the bottle in half with scissors and I can scrape it all out.

Brenda Martin I do use silicone as well but this tutorial was just how I mix the pouring medium. In the ‘how to mix your paint’ tutorial I show the ratios and the silicone being added. You don’t have to use silicone but I find it helps me get more cells.

Thank you! The REASONING was the thing I was missing when I first started. It seemed everyone I watched just followed a recipe but couldn’t explain it. And if you can’t explain what’s happening then it’s hard to understand your own ‘mistakes’ when they happen. I need to be able to figure things out and assumed there were others that would find it useful as well. I’m glad this was helpful for you!

you were talking about not wasting any paint or glue. I probably have you beat on that one. I am new at this so excuse any "faux pau" I've been using gallon cans of wite and black paint for my backgrounds. After I had it all poured up into smaller containers so that I can easily pick it up. Here's the funny part, I added water to both cans, not a lot but some, so now I have "black" water and "white" water so that I don't lose anything.

I nave not done any pouring yet, something easy like the glue or mod podge medium and the big thing is I don't want cells. Can you tell me how to do it?
@MaiganLynn
@MaiganLynn 5 лет назад
Hi Cathy! If you don’t want cells then definitely don’t add any silicone oils to your mix. You may still get some cell-like spots as the air bubbles come up through the paint. The best way to avoid that is to let your paints and pouring medium sit overnight - covered and undisturbed as the air bubbles make their way out. You may still end up with SOME cells but not nearly as many :)

Thanks Megan for you to share your recipe. In France it's difficult to find your Elmer glue. But there're some other brands that works. Personnaly my favorite PVA glue is from the brand APLI. And it's not expensive, surely one of the cheapest. The price is between 3,5 and 5 euros/liter. Another brand is "Cléopatre", a little more expensive. But cheaper than liquitex pouring medium and floetrol. I can find floetrol here but not the one with latex base. It's expensive, about 15 euros/liter. For silicone, we can find spray from different brands. In the chain of stores "Action" you can get the brand "Techno" . A spray of 400 ml cost less than 2 euros, very cheap. But it doesn't work as well as your "treadmill belt". I've order silicone treadmill belt via amazon. It's the first time I've found it possible to order in France. It's manufactured in the USA by "Essential values" and it's 100% silicone. We can find dimeticone (= PDMS = polydimethylsiloxane) in a 100% concentration in a eyelotion named "ophtasiloxane" but it's expensive. You can find asociation of differents silicone molecules in cosmetics, especially hair serum "anti-frizz. For example anti-frizz serum from the brand " Kéra science Les cosmétiques design Paris" associate cyclopentasiloxane, cyclohexasiloxane and dimeticonol with a solvent from the family "ether de glycol, dipropylène glycol. It works but I'm impatient to test the treadmill belt that seems to be the best option. Thanks for your recipes. Kind regards from France. Thierry

Yes! I’ve heard many people from Europe and overseas in general having a hard time finding the right supplies. Though, I’d be careful using just regular white glue - I use the Elmer’s glue-all or the Modpodge because it has better bonding agents. Regular what glue has been known to crack terribly. I hope you have much luck finding what you need. I think there are s few RU-vidrs from Europe, specifically, that may have lists of supplies but I can’t think of them off the top of my head. If I get a chance today I’ll look them up and see if I can find something for you!

I've heard of people using coconut milk hair serum, it's a coconut oil based hair serum, was thinking about giving it a try because I just so happen to have some. I have mod podge to though and this is the first time I've seen someone use glue for pouring. Awesome, I have the supplies..... just not something to pour on, maybe I'll use a wooden board I have plenty of those.

Hi Maragaret! I also have another tutorial about how to mix your paints as far as ratio and how much silicone to add that you may also find helpful. Half a bottle of pouring medium for one painting seems excessive and the liquitex medium is also expensive. Try applying the ratios in this tutorial and see what happens! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RTNRuR9zIgo.html

This is exactly the mixing tutorial I'd been looking for. I've been wanting to use Mod Podge but couldn't find a video or Pinterest recipe that showed it the way that you did. I do have a question regarding the type of Mod Podge used. I was wondering if it would be okay to use Mod Podge-Sparkle? I just like the sparkle effect of it and it doesn't have the chunky consistency of the M.P.-Glitter. In your opinion do you think that it would work? Thank you...I'm also a new subscriber because of this video. Now to watch Part 2 of this series.

Hi Deborah! Thanks for watching! I don’t prime my canvas. Some people do as a preference but ‘white’ canvas is already pre-primed. If you’re looking to further prime your canvas, a lot of artists use gesso. I sometimes pour a mixture of white paint across the canvas before I pour so it flows a bit better but I don’t always opt to do this. I hope this helped!

So, just asking, since you had Elmer's glue and Modge Podge, but only mixed the Modge Podge, does that mean that Elmer's and Modge Podge are interchangeable to be used as a pouting medium, and basically the same , as for effects and mixing and results? Thanks :)
@MaiganLynn
@MaiganLynn 5 лет назад
Yes, Elmer’s glue -all and modge podge have similar bonding properties which help keep your paints from cracking as they dry. (If you use the Elmer’s it HAS to be the glue-all as regular white school glue won’t do the trick.)

Hey Maigan..Thank you for helping with the process :) I have a query...Can we make the pouring medium and store it for later use ?
@sentimentalcrafting8529
@sentimentalcrafting8529 5 лет назад
Surbhi Mishra .... yes you can I have had mine stored for months.... just keep your lids and top of the jar free from solution as it will stick and you’ll never get it undone again ...

I’ve tried a variety of products from sprays to brush on - I prefer a brush on varnish. As long as it’s non-yellowing and meant as a protective sealant there are TONS of options to choose from. Krylon makes a few spray sealants - not sure if they make a brush on version or not. I’m going to be rounding up some supplies soon to do a tutorial on this very thing because it gets asked a lot!

Awesome! Great information. Just subscribed. I started pouring as a break from my more representational work and I am hooked! It’s so much fun.

Hey! So, I just tried to do my first pour and it ended up having some chunks in the mixture and then my colors ended up being really muddy; do you have any tips on that?
@IreneKiew
@IreneKiew 5 лет назад
I don't know about the chunks but muddy colours may mean that you added too much water and the paint was too thin
@goodnessineverybite2378
@goodnessineverybite2378 5 лет назад
So do you just add that into your white or all the colors?

I'm very new at this so I'm still a bit confused. Is a pouring medium different from floetrol?
@jessicaschlienz7599
@jessicaschlienz7599 5 лет назад
No
@MaiganLynn
@MaiganLynn 5 лет назад
Floetrol is used as a pouring medium - there is a variety of options available as far as pouring mediums go. It’s the piece of the puzzle that helps thin the paint while still maintaining the proper bond structure to help avoid cracks and whatnot while drying.

Thank you!!!! Omg I was getting a bit concerned in the comments that I was the only one who noticed that! MOD!! With a 'duh'... not a 'dge'...It's pronounced exactly how it's spelled...

Can I use latex interior house paint. I want to match my newly painted room. Can I mix that with cheap craft paints?
@MaiganLynn
@MaiganLynn 5 лет назад
Absolutely! The difference is, though, that the house paint will be much thinner so won’t require quite as much pouring medium. The ratios will need to be adjusted. It does require pouring medium though so it doesn’t crack as it dries.

Sorry, if i make a lot of this medium and i want to have it in a closed container, it will be usefull the next time?
@MaiganLynn
@MaiganLynn 6 лет назад
It should be, yes! I store my pouring medium in the same container I mix it and I haven’t had a problem. I don’t let it sit for long before I paint my next piece though so, from personal experience, I couldn’t say how long it would be good for.

Good day, love our videos They're cool and informative. Pls tell, did I miss something? I only daw your mixing of glue and water? Or did you put in mospodge to?
@MaiganLynn
@MaiganLynn 5 лет назад
Hi there! Thanks for watching! You can either use Elmer’s glue-all OR Mod Podge. They have similar bonding agents so using one or the other is fine. No need to use both. Hope that helps.

How long can you keep glue pouring medium in a sealed jar ?
@MaiganLynn
@MaiganLynn 2 года назад
I’m not sure of the exact timeline but I had some sealed in a jar for a year and it was still fine - not even a film overtop. I’m assuming it would depend on the kind of container it was kept in.

does the mod podge have to be gloss medium? or any mod podge will do?

For how long can I leave the mixing in the container?
@MaiganLynn
@MaiganLynn 5 лет назад
If it’s well sealed they should last quite some time. I go through a lot so I’ve never had any just sit. You may have to peel a film off the top before next use but the stuff underneath should be ok!

thanks for sharing Maigan. I have had cracking with other mix and didn't know why, so that is good to know thanks. I can't get Elmers in New Zealand, but we do have Modge Podge so going to try that. thanks again :)

How long does the pouring medium last?
@MaiganLynn
@MaiganLynn 5 лет назад
I couldn’t say for sure as I go through so much of it but if it’s sealed well I imagine it could last quite a long time. You may have to scrape a film off the top of it at some point but it would still be good to use underneath.

I have tried another recipe for a pouring medium and found good result (3 part pva glue+ 1 part acrylic medium gloss + 1.5 part water + about 50 ml retarder)

@MaiganLynn
@MaiganLynn 6 лет назад
Hi Shallah! I haven't - I HAVE noticed that in the winter months here (Canada) everything is quite a bit thicker than the summer so I can see how warmer water would also help in wintertime if I find it too thick. Thank you! :)

Great that you share! I bought samples of acrylic from hardware store to try too!!! I am 74 had 8 kids and never never stopped being creative just to defy everyone who thought I would not be able to do a thing over than nurse and nurtureLOL I have a great physician hubby who did 50 percent of everything and worked so I think he did 100 and me 50 of our household chores and raising kids When to work at age 65 long story running his practice until he retired. I have sold paintings etc but the family came first I am drawing painting and enjoying myself learning bought all the ingredients for pouring just waiting for the torch!!!! I have tons of supplies in my studio! I have gotten antisocial not caring if I sell or promote myself it takes time away from producing. I am excited to try all of these methods I wonder what you think about samoples valspar from lowes?

thanx for the demo. i've been trying to stick close (but not exactly) to your recipe of 2/3 glue, 1/3 water, then 2/3 paint, 1/3 medium & 3-5 drops of liquid wrench. i haven't been getting too many cells. i have used glue all before and i forgot if i had good results or not. now i'm using elmer's school glue. i wonder if i'm not getting cells because it's school glue and not glue all. or maybe it's because i'm using liquid wrench and not treadmill lubricant. i've tried floetrol, but since glue all is non-toxic i'd prefer to use glue-all. also, i've seen some recipes with rubbing alcohol. will you please comment on these issues? thanks.
