A quick review of my Hyundai Sonata that I bought preowned with 116k miles on it at the time. It now has 160k miles...here is what I have to say about my experiences living with this Sonata. Enjoy!

I have a 2011 hyundia sonata and i bought it when it had 120k on it back in 2020. And now it has 215k on it and still runs. Only thing i needed to repair was breaks, rotors, starter, transmission belt, front end repair, and oil change every 5,000 miles with high mileage oil and also changed the air filter under the hood and inside the glove department. She still runs like new. Never had to changed my battery. Thinking about changing it next month though.

Sounds like you got a really nice one. Mine ran well too but apparently the engine died on the next owner within 20k miles

You know the only thing I’ve heard about these in the last 10 or 15 years is how much better they are and how reliable they are. I’ve got a 15 and that’s why I bought it. 6 years latter, it burns oil like mad, has timing chain noise, and shifts a little bit weird with only 65,000 miles. I knew someone with an Elantra and a Sorento and pretty much the same thing happened. I will never buy another one of these cars again.

Hey! I have since gotten rid of this car but I had none of those issues you spoke of. My concerns were with the odd things breaking that really shouldn’t (buttons, the lumbar support controls, and the sunroof leaking) I did have some minor repairs that I brought up but nothing crazy. However I think 2012 was the sonatas best year. We’ll see how these new ones turn out. I just bought the new Elantra N line.

I have a 2012 Sonata and just replaced the starter. Those starters are not cheap. I have used the Eco button and I do not recommend using it.
@auto_joe
@auto_joe 3 года назад
Agreed! Seems like the eco button makes the driving experience 100x worse for barely any improvement in fuel economy
@amidthefight6915
@amidthefight6915 3 года назад
Thanks for sharing. I’ve got a ‘13 with 63k on it right now. I can confirm the Eco mode is weird. I turned it off after a day of using it and haven’t gone back. Made the car feel overly and unnaturally sluggish accelerating by comparison. Also agree that not being able to control Bluetooth on the steering wheel is a pain and dangerous, I assumed mine was broken or not configured correctly, odd that that’s just how it is. The back passenger side window doesn’t roll down unless I do it from the driver’s controls, which bums my kid out a bit, haven’t considered getting it fixed but maybe I will. Otherwise, so far it’s a really nice car. Haven’t driven in the winter in the Midwest yet, so maybe snow tires are in my future, too. Hoping I’ll have more luck with long term reliability, I’ve heard mixed things, a lot of positive, some negative.

I upgrade my radio to a 2014 sonata radio which added all those features to the car

2012 model here. Such a fascinating car. Styling and sound features are unmatched for the Sonata for car bracket. Horn sounds like a instrument and unlock and lock sounds are a video game. However reliability is called into question so you must get it from a trusted source. Steering coupler predictably goes out at 100k. AC compressor will probably needs to be replaced once and they should have never signed off on this car before engineering that properly …..Only solution, unless your a mechanic to diagnose the AC clutch sensors first, is to replace compressor for $1,000 fix. If you get the 2012 model, you must be prepared, especially how old it is now. Otherwise, for the right price and preparation, cloth seats and lumbar support, it’s a premium experience for a dirt cheap price. NOTE: I also own 2014 Infiniti Q50 3.7 so I understand what makes a car feel premium and so close to perfection while being known for its flaws.

Love the comment! I feel like all cars have a point in there mileage where they just start to break down and for my Sonata it was between 120 and 160 K mileage. The car got me from point a to point B safely for years and it was quite the comfortable boat while I owned it. I have moved on to a 2021 Elantra now but I still do you think about that car from time to time.
@sauce8277
@sauce8277 8 месяцев назад
@@auto_joe That feels about right, mileage wise…..which kinda makes me sad, because I really wanted the car to last quite long(now that I grown to appreciate it). I know someone else that had theirs last past 200k so it really all depends, of course. Like many, Elantra was the right way to move on. I am not sure I could do that….thankfully, I don’t need to make the decision since I already have another car. Only other thing is I would have really liked my Sonata to have the turbo but those things are not needed lmbo. (Especially on THETA II, Not to mention go bad quick). If Hyundai can get their build quality perfected, I have no reason to go with anyone else in the far future since Toyota wants to be too careful

Your car is wrecked I can tell it drives like a bucket but that’s not a bad thing it’s just what happens with cars they get wrecked and then they go for sale for cheap
@auto_joe
@auto_joe 2 года назад
It wasn’t wrecked but I was rear ended about a year and a half before this video. The frame was pulled and the damage was fixed but the car needed an alignment at the time of this video

Just bought a Hyundai Sonata GLS 2012 with 158000km never had a fix more then $200 but then again I know my mechanic quite well sounds like your mechanics are ripping you off
@auto_joe
@auto_joe 2 года назад
Well I don’t know how you get around paying $200 for all new brakes or a new battery+alternator but sounds like your mechanic isn’t making money. Regardless of the job I got multiple quotes before proceeding with a mechanic. I’m glad you’ve had better luck with your sonata than I.
@kylearmitage9323
@kylearmitage9323 2 года назад
@@auto_joe look complaining about the breaks and tires is a pretty poor reason to say the car is bad, that is something your going to have to replace on any car same with the battery . Now the alternator on the otherhand at that mileage is something annoying to have to replace.
@auto_joe
@auto_joe 2 года назад
@@kylearmitage9323 hey Kyle, I also talk about the window switch being partially broken, the sunroof leaking, the buttons on the steering wheel no longer working. I totally get it, used cars require maintenance. However, this was a time in my life where I couldn’t afford to not have a car, even for a day. There were several times during my ownership of this Sonata where I paid to rent a car just so I could repair it.

Hi does yours burn oil between oil changes? Mine has 106000 miles and it burns a quart of oil for every 2-3 tanks of gas.
@auto_joe
@auto_joe 3 года назад
Hi! I no longer own this car but it did burn a very very small amount of oil that didn’t matter with me changing the oil every 3k miles. My car had 164k miles on it at the time of sale. I owned it from 116k, original motor and transmission.

Long story short Had a 1997 Honda Accord V6 Traveled 250 - 300 miles to and back from work. At first, using one qt. Of oil a week. Back main seal is bad. Vary costly to replace. I went with STP OIL TREATMENT with"red label". Now this took 8 weeks to it work. I week , used STP Next week oil. Done this for the 8 weeks Costed $24-$26. Good luck And GOD BLESS

Hello and happy motorist vehicles with 100,000 MI what always have some kind of a problem you don't need a sunroof and you don't need heated seats and as far as not enjoying the ride of the car remember it takes you from point A to point B don't be so dumb on yourself in time you'll be able to upgrade to something that you really want are most of all keep in mind even up in New England you can't do 90 mph everywhere slow down pay attention enjoy your life and your blessings for whenever they come
