The sentence "you've lost your chance for privacy in this class" is really telling of how much children and especially students in class are being viewed not as equals, but as people whose rights can be spontaneously taken away at will.
(confused look) What right are you referring to? The right to ignore what is being taught? (you hate the class) The right to belittle a teacher because you think they're stupid? (you hate the teacher) The right to draw whenever you want and share it in the middle of class? (creative expression being shared in class is more important to you than what is being taught) Passing a note in class isn't private. :) Everyone in the room knew you were passing notes. Sure, it was the students, and maybe not the teacher until drawing #5, but if it was so important, then why risk the real chance of being found out in the middle of class versus waiting until class is over? You can always leave a class. There are consequences to that, sure, (lack of a pass gets you a detention and all), but if you don't like the teacher or the curriculum, then leave if it's honestly a waste of your valuable time. No one can actually stop you. I know. I saw it happen all the time at school despite detentions being given left and right. :/ (shrugs) I know a guy who dropped out of Highschool and worked instead to get his GED. Sure, he regretted not graduating, but once he got his GED, it was smooth sailing after that. (shrugs) :) Up to you.
@@tenderhearthero9602 Not referring to legal rights (though here in Germany, it theoretically falls under the secrecy of post, but I don't think anyone ever seriously sued a teacher for that ofc), but a general sense of privacy. Should the student be writing and passing notes in class? No, but reading out aloud what could very well embarrass the student or reveal very private stuff about them would be hardly serve any use. In fact, it would more satisfy a teacher's sense of revenge towards the student rather than serving pedagogical purpose. Which should be the point. Embarrassing the student would put them under pressure and stress, both not situations under which a person can *learn*. One can never know the importance of a note, no matter how unlikely it may be that it is that urgent. When I'm a teacher I'm going to try my best not to embarrass my students and be understanding. Not going to act like I can randomly declare their right to privacy being taken away because they've "had their chance".
And in order to clarify additionally to my prior comment: I was specifically referring to the statement of having used up the chance for privacy itself, much less trying to debate whether or not a private note always falls under that. But claiming that a person has "had their chance for privacy" and now "lost" it? That's a very absurd premise to act upon.
“You lost your chance at privacy in this class.” That is a phrase that I never want to ever hear from a teacher. Someone who I am to trust with my life.
This happened to me, except I was asking my friend if she had a tampon and when the teacher read it in her head before reading aloud she just had an embarrassed look, crumpled it up and threw it in the garbage
I had this happen to me twice: once in second grade, and then again in fourth grade, but on a slightly larger scale (if that makes sense). I would create a note talking about how we love the teacher and pass it around for everyone to sign it or add their own little notes. In second grade, we got a general lecture on passing notes and then she read it and completely flipped her lecture into being all sweet, and in fourth grade (I wasn't the teacher's favorite student), she only read the big "WE LOVE YOU" in the middle and started lecturing us on stuff like that and relationship and bla, bla, bla. Meanwhile, I was sinking lower and lower into my chair as she kept asking who started it before another student blurted out that it was for her. She too completely flipped her demeanor afterward.
My and my friend were talking during class after a really bad week, and our conversation was something like 'I like slither noodles- you like what?- snakes dude- Oh, I like slither noodles too- We should hang out later- We should buy footie onesies and wear them to school- Yes- Yes-' And the teacher came to school the next Monday wearing a snake onesie, best teacher ever
My teacher almost got fired because instead of reading the note, which was me asking my friend if she had a pad, in his head, he read the entire thing in front of everyone with no regards to me and my friend’s feelings. The guys in my class were extremely protective of us too because we’ve all been friends since childhood and they were like big brothers to us- lets just say that there was a major student teacher fight-
There were these two girls that studied the writing of the eleven language from lord of the rings. So they would past notes to each other in elven and if anyone tried to read them, they wouldn’t understand. The teacher actually caught them passing notes back and fourth once and tried to read it and was completely baffled and just gave up and neither of them were in trouble.(i remember reading this on a Reddit post about a year ago so if it’s wrong please correct me.)
Yeah I’m middle school my friends and I would come up with different codes and secret languages to write to eachother in and it was so fun and no one would ever rly b able to decipher them

In fifth grade me and my friend were known for passing notes to everyone in our friends group. Except all of us were scattered all over the room so we would be like "I need a tissue" and put it on their desk when we were getting it. Us two kept a whole stash of paper in our desks and eventually our teacher got so fed up with whenever we needed.paper.someone else in our class had to give it to us
Me and my friend were passing notes and it was personal. The teacher was chill and didn’t read it out loud or even read it himself. He handed to back to the guy I was passing it to at end on class lol.
I embarrassed my teacher so badly bc i passed a note to my friend and she tried to read it out loud but midway through reading it she stopped bc she realized that it said, “Can u pass me a pad?”

I hope a teacher never reads one of my notes lol. One time in class me and my friend started role playing being married on a note and i dont think a teacher would understand
Role playing is so fun when you have nothing to do in class though 😭 me and my friend would pass so much notes and one day she started laughing so loudly and my teacher was just staring at me 😭😭
i had to do the same thing once since my friend asked for a pad and the teacher wanted me to give the note to him i said no and i just kept it in my mouth until class was over he never asked again
I remember one time I drew a nice drawing of a teacher but she just smiled and said thank you and hung it on her wall This is also relatable bc my friend asked me for a pad and the teacher said GIVE THAT TO ME and she read it out loud without thinking
This reminds me of when I was in 4th grade We were working individually and I was getting pencils out of my pencil box, and looked at a little piece of paper I forgot I put in there and smiled. The teacher asked what I was doing and I said I was just reading a note, and without any additional context he said “that’s it!” And sent me out of the classroom to work alone. So I was crying because I didn’t do anything wrong, and he goes out into the hallway and starts yelling at me for being obnoxious 🥺🥺 I didn’t even know passing notes was a thing and I rarely ever got even a finger wagged at me so I just felt like I was getting bullied lol. I wonder if he knew he was in the wrong though because although he never apologized to me it was never brought up after the fact 🥺
“Detention, all of you” is the most terrifying person to hear as somebody who follows the rules and is never in the trouble making group. It makes my heart break everytime I hear this.
The teacher saw one of the girls pass something to her friend, and told her to give him the note. She got up and just handed the pad to him and he just stared at it in shock
My friend was trying to tell me why she was gone for 2 weeks her mom had gotten cancer so we were writing back and forth the teacher grabbed and read all the sad stuff and the little I could do to comfort for my friend ended up crying while the teacher was reading and left I got pissed and went after her she didn't get in trouble cuz she "needed a break" and the teacher got off scot free cuz we should've "taken the convo somewhere else" and I got detention for a week

that’s kinda stupid. I mean the consequences. Yeah, wrong place, but fuck yes it was the right time. yeah, you’re friend was going through a rough time, but you shouldn’t have gotten a WEEK of detention and you’re friend nothing, that’s not fair by their logic- I swear, school systems are so flawed, people just don’t have empathy.

This reminded me of a story I heard once : A teacher saw two of his female students passing a note to each other. He asked one of the girls to give him the note and decided to read it out loud. It turned out that one of them needed a pad bc she started her period 🥲 He turned red and let the girl go to the nurse.
One of my teachers in high school would make you put your phone on speaker in front of the whole class if your phone rang during class. And one girl got a call telling her that her baby wasn’t going to survive after they ran tests on it. She was sobbing for a good 10 minutes. The teachers rule was ended after that

Once my friend passed me a note in math class complaining about their parents and I put it in my backpack before the bell rang apparently it fell out cause my science teacher handed it back to me the next day and asked if I knew who wrote it I had to pretend i didn’t cause it would have caused my friends situation to get worse if the school got involved.
I don’t understand teachers that first if all take notes and second of all read them in front of the class. So what if they’re passing notes I don’t see the big deal

I had an awesome teacher who caught a student in the class doodling and she laughed and said "well since you're making me a stick figure, you gotta put some good detail in my hair" she was the best!
I was always the kid that said "Take it." and shoved the note in my mouth. No matter what school I was in, the class laughed and the teacher was always a mix of confused and pissed cause they couldn't do a damn thing.
Omg! One time in 6th grade, during history class, our teacher had to leave the classroom, and we all made a plan. When she got back we would be passing around a note giggling, laughing, and making other sorts of commentary, maybe writing (signing it) on it idk, BUT here’s the thing; when she would read the note it would say something like “To our favorite Social studies teacher” or something heartwarming and sweet like that, and it would have all of signatures on it. Now keep in mind this wasn’t a really small class there were 31 of us because we were the only advanced 6th grade class in our entire school. And so we did just that and eventually she stopped the class to grab the note, also we were all silent with excitement plus maybe anxiety, and her reaction was priceless! She was so joyful! She even said that it had made her day, but it also made ours. Long story short, my class made a note with all our signatures saying how great of a teacher she was, passed it around, she got it, and it made her day and ours.
I remember teachers taking away privacy love notes...and I was always scared cause one time I saw a teacher reading my note and telling the principal...it was a nightmare I never sent notes...!
Once a classmate passed me a note but we were caught by a teacher. When she read it out loud, it said “Bold of you to assume I wrote something down on this”. I still find that extremely funny.
I mean, if the teacher wants to read my note that says “kate bishop in a suit could rail me” then that’s fine, but idk if it’s the best professional decision to make
Imagine if the note was talking about some sort of family tragedy and the teacher would have read it out loud… students are people too, they need to not be exploited.
In 6th grade my Dad had died and I passed a note to my friend about it so she knew why I was acting weird. The teacher saw and snatched the note. She then gave a whole lecture about not passing notes and actually gave me detention. And when she read the note to the class she her face went completely pale. The entire class was silent. She stammered out an apology, she never took our notes again.
I once drew a unibrow on one of my teachers and she saw it and told me it was not a nice thing to do I explained to her that I gave her one because In history unibrows have been associated with wisdom and 10 year old me didn’t get that it was rude I just thought she was very wise
Once had a dude try to tell me he loved me by a note in class (he never said anything before, we weren’t dating & very young). Teacher took it from his hands before he could pass it onto me and laughed sooo loud for what felt like forever. “Ha!! I’m sorry I walked into that!!” I had no idea what it said, that was so embarrassing.

Giving a group detention or collective punishment is actually a Geneva war crime, I don't think many people know that I also don't think it's fair to the children who did nothing. Especially since the entire class did not sit there and draw that picture. We had a lot of teachers like that at my school it sucked
This happened to me before in middle school. My friend and I were passing notes about an upcoming test or something (I don’t really remember) and when I had just finished writing and was about to pass it over to them, the teacher had saw me and asked me to it hand over. I was dumbfounded for about 3 seconds, so she asked me again to give her the note- instead of doing so I ripped up the note, walked over to the trash can, threw it away, sat back down, and looked her dead in the eye and said confused: “What note?” I swear, everyone in that room was staring at me, including the teacher. Yeah so, I got detention later on that day- but middle school me obviously did not want ANYONE reading that note.
Reading a students note never goes well you'll either find out something you don't want to or get your feeling hurt. And as you should let kids be it's just a note
My teacher did that to me one time. The part that made me mad was the fact the note was from before class had even started. My friend kept looking over at my desk waiting for it to be passed to her. That’s what blew it all. 🤦♀️
This reminded me of when i was in 3rd grade and my mom got in a car crash and passed away, i had no legal guardian so i was going to be put up for adoption. I was passing a note that said something like "I am going to be adopted and die" And my teacher read it and the whole class was laughing. She ended up sending me to the office for lying about "tragic situations" and the teacher got in trouble because it was true that i would be adopted.
one time i had a pe teacher who got mad at me bcs i was fighting with friend abt my sketch book. he took it, crumpled it and stomped it on the way out. his footprint is still there after 211 days i would have understood but he didnt need to be such a bitch abt it that he just had to step foot on it when he went out
This is why when my friends and I pass around notes, we do it either in Greek, Sindarin (one of Tolkien's Elvish), Kazadul (Tolkien Dwarfish), or in Mandalorian. Ya can't read in a language that you don't know and it would take all class just to translate it.
One time I passed a note to my friend to ask for a tampon and the teacher took the note, read it (about to read it out loud) and when she saw what I said she quietly folded it back up again, gave the note to my friend, and resumed her lesson.

I did this with my friend because I desperately needed to talk about it with her because I was really close to breaking out in tears and the teacher did this and started reading it out to the class as soon as she took it. She went really silent when she got a to a certain part of it and looked at me with a look.

My 6th grade teacher was actually so cool... whenever she saw a note being handed out in class, she would take it and pretend to read to out, but then she would make up something hilarious and pretended that was what the note said🤣
I plan on being a music teacher so there’s not gonna be much opportunity to write notes. All the students are gonna have sheet music, they’re not gonna be able to lmao. But I could never do this. I’m just gonna take the note. No reason to read it. I wrote a note in middle school about something that concerned me and could cause trouble but it was really nothing and the ideas formed from things I had been watching. It was the most difficult situation I had to talk myself out of and it was embarrassing. I wouldn’t do that to anyone.
