Poverty on rise among Germany's elderly 

We all need to make sure our elderly parents are ok . Help where we can . 🌎🥺

I met alot of elderly German living in Argentina because they just couldn't afford to have a decent life in Germany really sad.

This couple highlights and exemplifies the problem of renting long-term, especially in old age. Pensions often don't factor in rent payments assuming homeownership. Having a secure home is a necessity for nearly all.

Truly shocking...

It is criminal what a rich country like Germany allows to happen to their retired citizens.

Very sad state of affairs.

I thought Germany was this equal opportunity paradise that roamed in free healthcare and university.

Unfortunately in Germany it is not common to own a property, so when they are retire, they receive monthly less money as when they worked, but they still paying a rent, and with the time , everything get expensive, food, services, rent, so it is an easy way to get poor. For example if they will own a property, they can have 1200€ only for food and services.

Not only Germany. I believe it's all over the world where there is no safety net. What is more sad is as one gets older, one needs more medical care which are getting more expensive including the medication. It is better to expire early if one is poor.

Let this be a lesson to all, save some money for your retirement, a pension is only to help out not to rely on completely

The fruits of liberalism

The elderly couple are so dignified and sweet. I wonder if they have adult children who can help. If they were my neighbors I would befriend them. Fast food is expensive and seeing them unable to purchase even a single burger is sad. I wish people better off would watch out for people like the Dieckmann's. It sounds naive, but it could be so easy to reach out to anyone (especially the vulnerable elderly) who are struggling. It would be an honor to befriend them and treat them to something special.

The pension system in German is one of the poorest. Instead, the Government spends the money on utter nonsense.

in holland, retired people get 1400+ euros and non retired get 1200+... it is doable...

Germany you should be ashamed of yourself. This is beyond horrendous. Elderly folks who have worked all their lives to end up in the misery of poverty. There is no excuse for this deprivation amongst it's people.

In Puerto Rico low income citizens from 62 yrs old can rent affordable apartments according to their monthly income: 10, 20 or 30 per cent. In countries such as Germany, they should provide for their elderly people something similar.

Modern European Christian households tend not to care about their parents but over invest in spouse/children. I disagree with this strongly, as this only teaches the children the parents are disposable.

German state pension is more Generous than the UK's, this is why I support Scottish independence so we can give our pensioners more money in an independent Scotland and join the European single market, Love to Germany from Scotland.

Poor old Germans with their 1200 EUR pensions...they need to try and look at central/eastern Europe where people receive 400-500 EUR pension and spend it all on rent + basics

European Union is behaving as if there is no poverty in Europe between European people. This is what will kill the EU.

Where all the money goes around the world? Elderly cant have proper meal to eat. Working class cant afford all the bills like rent, energy, etc Youngsters have difficulty finding a job.....

Why stay in Germany ??? Move abroad like I did! ECUADOR is perfect..I m 72 moved here at 69..my rent is 200 a month all utilities included ..food ca 160 a month..bus 15 cents !!! Health insurance is 72 a month

Rich Economy not rich country

It,s so said eldery that work they whole life to end up like this,you work and when you stop you cant go home and wait to die,but that is not only in Germany ,its also in the Nederlands also.people who help to bill up the country,and pay there tax money,who to live like this,

I pay 1865 dollars for 2 bedroom apartment in Round Rock texas. Then you have to pay extra for the apartment insurance, pest control, trash., electricity. Water, and internet. I would be in heaven if my rent is less than 1000 dollars.

my country many retirees have moved to Thailand Bali or countries that are cheaper to live in and have being doing so for years

I'm sorry but with a $1200 pension they can live well enough if they move to a lower cost of living area, of which there are plenty in the rural and/or eastern parts of Germany. Many people can live with less money.

On their place and retirement wages i will go out of Germany into countries where german retirement incomes worth more and that is countries such as some east european ,Hungary,Spain maybe because properties are cheap there

They could relocate to Africa for retirement and lives luxurious life on that amount of pension,things are pretty cheap down here and the weather is good

I heard about the elderly in Greece and Italy. It's sad but some choose suicide because they think it's a better option than starving to death.

Germany sees Ukraine's interests first than their citizens , they send billion of euros for aid and ammunition rather to use it to help the poor and the pensioners.

Some 40 years ago they made it a point to Telecast poverty in India and other third world countries. Now they themselves face the reality, while the criticised have improved tremendously ! Moral of the story - Don't throw stones at others sitting in a glass house !
