October 27th marks the 21st anniversary of the release of the classic film Powder. I thought I'd take a look back and remember some of the cool stuff they put in the movie. It's important because it's filled with character dialogue, a great message, hope for humanity, and more. I hope you enjoy my take on it. If you're not familiar with the video essay format, don't worry, you'll catch on quick, it's just me talking over awesome footage from the movie. Maybe you'll even be inspired to make your own video essay -- it's important that we have tons of video essays to watch or film culture is in deep shit. For every movie or movie topic, there should be at least 5 video essays. Thanks!

I always saw the Jock scene as Powder idealizing the guy's normitivity rather than lusting. He longs to be a part of the world like everyone else .

I don't think "powder" was being aroused by the guy, more like observing what it's like to have such lucious hair and also pigmented skin. He was probably feeling a little jealous and impressed at the same time.

You won't see this since it's been so long but I couldn't agree more. There's so much heart and honesty in this movie that I guess it scares some. He falls into sarcasm and making fun of it. I hope you're doing well.

Yes, especially with his ridiculous racist remarks which have no basis in the movie. "Oh gee the father hates the baby because he's white." What an ignorant ass! The father doesn't acknowledge the baby because he's an ALBINO. And that other racist remarks he made, saying powder was "whiter than white" and "white people get special treatment." If anybody is the racist, it's the POS who posted this video.

This movie confused me as a kid. When I was noticing racism, I found it odd how they treated Powder. “He’s the whitest white guy, they should love him.” Instead they hate him for not being like them.

This movie has absolutely NOTHING to do with racism and it was made back in 1995 when people weren't running around accusing everyone of being racists everywhere they go and talking about skin color like ignorant racist scumbags that THEY actually are for doing it in the first place. The character Powder is white because he's an ALBINO, and the only person calling him overly white is the dumbass racist son of a bitch who posted this video and corrupted a perfectly good movie with his incorrect opinionated racist remarks.

Agreed, absolutely. Did you also happen to notice the other racist remarks? The first one, he says the father hates the boy because he's white, not because he's ALBINO, which is the truth of the film. And said he poisoned it with his racist lies. And then he goes on to say how white people always get special privileges and everything else. You know what? It's people like these who are the REAL racists, because they're too stupid to keep their racist opinions to themselves and their mouths shut.

Interesting essay...'except' Powder isn't looking at that guy in a gay way. He is mesmerized because he is seeing a normal looking body for the first time. He only has himself for reference...and his grandparents, which I am guessing stayed clothed. ;-) The jerk guy accuses him of being gay because they can't relate to how he is feeling.
