Power BI Architecture Best Practice

Using Power BI is simple. However, using it properly needs a good architecture. In a multi-developer environment, the architecture of a Power BI implementation should allow multiple developers to work on the same solution at the same time. On the other hand, the Power BI architecture should be designed so that different layers of that can be decoupled from each other for better integration. In this video, I explain how Dataflows, Datamarts, and Shared Datasets can help build such architecture in Power BI.

Right now, I have started working with shared datasets in the Power BI service. This collaborative environment uses the Power BI service live connection, however, one of the main limitations is that left navigation and modeling are disabled. How to overcome this limitation?

A Date table is commonly used by all departments data and takes place in all data models. Q: Such common tables must be kept as a separate Dataflow and so must be included as a different Data Source Query (only one Dataflow for Date Table) or must be included at every separate Department tables (repeating Date table at each Dataflow for different departmensts).

Thanks for the video, very helpful. Would there be any benefit to use Staging Dataflows with azure datalake for storage INTO Datamarts for transofmation and azure sql storage INTO Datasets for the reports?

Yes, absolutely. as I mentioned, staging dataflows helping with data source isolation. I always recommend that.

Do you recommend dimensions via dataflow and large fact e.g orders with in a shared dataset skipping the dataflow?

For what scenarios in regards to data volume you consider Dataflow Staging layer usefull? I asume that at some point (big data volumes) to load all data to Dataflow staging layer will consume a lot of time. Thanks

I would recommend it regardless of the size of the data. Because it gives you the data source isolation.

How will query folding work here ?

Query folding is only a concept from Power Query to the data source, which is still valid from Dataflow to the data source (as long as your data source supports it and your transformations support it).
